The development of novel nucleotide sequencing methodologies (NGS) allows to test efficiently, large amounts of nucleotide sequences. The HLA genes show high degree of sequence homology, therefore, specific ad hoc strategies need to be designed for the optimal application of NGS to HLA typing. . . Next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology promises new insights into the evolutionary biolgy and mechanisms underlying disease associations of immunogenetic loci such as HLA and KIR. The number of known alleles of HLA has grown exponentially in the last two decades, and the number of KIR alleles is also expected to rise significantly as we apply NGS methods in diverse population groups.
