A Message from John A. Gerlach, Ph.D.,
D(ABHI), ASHI President-Elect
| One of the great things about ASHI is the opportunity to serve the Society. I have a suspicion that I am going to have a great deal of opportunities to serve ASHI over the next few years and I can thank the ASHI membership collectively for their largess of electing me to the President-Elect position. I have had a lot of professional growth and networking opportunities over the years, having made my way from ARB commissioner to becoming an Inspector Trainer, to my term on the ASHI Board. All I can say about these experiences is, "Wow." I have had the opportunity to work with amazing people, interact with tangential organizations (CMS, UNOS, etc.), and develop great colleagues I can now call friends. I look forward to the next few years as a continued learning experience and an opportunity to further serve ASHI. Isn't the field of transplantation a great place to have a career? (Beats the heck out of clinical chemistry!) It is with this sense of great honor that I introduce to you this issue of "In the Groove." In this issue you'll find articles about the new Upstate Medical University Cord Blood Bank in Syracuse, NY and information on the 2013 ASHI meetings. ASHI's Regional Workshops are a great way to get the CE credits needed to maintain our credentials. The atmosphere is more intimate and personal than at the Annual Meeting- a smaller mouthful to chew, so to speak. But let's not forget about that meeting, the next of which is our 39th Annual Meeting in Chicago; what a great city to visit! It won't be hard to focus, though, as I am sure the sessions will be as riveting as those in San Juan. The meetings and science keep getting better and better! Finally, a few reminders: First, don't miss your renewal notice so you can continue receiving all the member benefits that ASHI has to offer. Second, don't miss out on all of the ways you can connect to ASHI through social media. ASHI keeps us all connected to the science and profession and, through these e-newsletters, it happens in a timely and convenient way. Enjoy this issue of "In the Groove" and I look forward to working with you all to continue making ASHI the Society that improves and furthers our professional lives. |

Projected to open in early 2014, the Upstate Cord Blood Bank will be added to the list of 27 public cord blood banks currently operating in the United States. Dr. Robert Corona, Chair of Upstate Medical University's Pathology, and Ms. Charlene Hubbell, HLA/Stem Cell Laboratory Supervisor at Upstate Medical University, recently sat down with Jim Reith for an interview at WCNY to discuss the importance of cord blood donation.

External Affairs Committee Update
| In the past, External Affairs Committee liaison reports were included with the summary of the Board of Directors meeting minutes. ASHI's ever-increasing involvement with organizations outside the Society has now created the happy need to separate the committee's activity report from the minutes summary. Members can be proud of the respect for its expertise that ASHI has gained throughout the transplantation and clinical immunology communities. This is due entirely to the efforts of the volunteers who freely give their time to serve as liaisons and committee members in outside organizations.
