Team GFR Saturday Mornings

Congratulations to John Shirley on his first marathon, Napa, and a Boston Qualifier! Here's a message from John:

"The marathon went well - perfect weather and a beautiful course. I ran it in 3:29:29, which was barely faster than my 3:30 target (which is the minimum qualifier for Boston). A little sore after the race, but not too bad. Thanks for all of your help and your great program!"

Preparing for races and training in general is so much more fun when you have a group following the same workouts and the same schedule. Injuries sometimes result from trying too many things and being pulled in too many directions. For 20 years, Team GFR Running Groups have consistently met their goals and have avoided injuries when they follow the plans.

Here are a couple more testimonials from Team GFR Alumni:

John and Susan,

"Seeing you on Sunday in Portland was such a wonderful feeling. It was so motivating and I appreciate your kindness and genuine effort to make each person feel special. This begin my first marathon, I had a lot of nervousness and anticipation of the unknown. The resources provided by what you facilitate helped me realize a dream that otherwise would have been a "someday" goal. I started running to overcome the unfortunate challenges I'd been faced with and to show my daughter that in life and in running, we ARE stronger that we think! You are a blessing to many! With abundant gratitude, Amber Gilbert"

-------------------------

Dear John and Susan (and entire GFR crew),

"This is just a quick note to say thank you for the support and sage advice you provided while I was training for (and running) my first marathon in Eugene last weekend.

The first time I ever ran more that 2 miles without stopping was last April. I did a short race and got hooked but didn't have many friends into it. So, whenever I had questions about clothing, nutrition, shoes, etc. you guys were there. Salem is so lucky to have a shop like yours. Thanks again, Grant Linsell

P.S. Susan, you were right about the Endurolyte! I should have taken all of them at mile 22. Maybe I could have run 3:18:00 instead of 3:22:09..."

VO2max Chart and Prediction Table

You all have access, even the Alumni, to a PERSONAL VO2max CHART and PREDICTION TABLE. Click here to enter your personal information and a current time at any distance in meters, kilometers, yards, or miles. Submit that information and a chart will appear that you can reference any time. Review your personal chart and see how pace, heart rate and perceived effort relate to one another.

Have you ever wondered what your realistic potential is at different race distances? Use this calculator to find out. Included below the pace and heart rate chart is a prediction table for distances from 800 meters to the marathon. You can erase your info and resubmit it as many times as you want using the form that appears under the chart. As your times improve, re-calculate your potential!

Want to see what it takes to run a faster half marathon or marathon time? Plug in your dream time and compare where you are at shorter distances. The calculator works both ways. Have fun with it.

Need a benchmark? Run a 1.5-mile time trial and enter your results.

Flooding at Minto

Water remains on some paths in Minto. Please be safe.

Water level updates are available at the NOAA site. Put in Salem, OR for local info. 3/10 7am level: 20.23 feet and expected to rise to 21.33 on Tues and back down to about 16 feet by Saturday.

NOAA - National Weather Service
If the level reads above 17ft, then a portion of the bike paths in Minto-Brown Pk are under water. At 19ft, the back portions of the park and portions of Homestead Rd are under water. At 21.5ft nearly all of Minto-Brown Pk is under water. The road is open, but all paths are virtually submerged. At 23 ft the gates are locked and access to the park is prohibited.
