December 2012

Dear University of Rochester Alumni,

As the year draws to a close, many of us use this time to take stock of our lives, to examine our past, and plan our future. The University is no different.

During Meliora Weekend, we recognized the 10th anniversary of the Kearns Center, as well as the 20th anniversary of the McNair Program. We celebrate these visionary programs, their significant achievements, and their contributions to our community and our University.

We also hold great hope for our future. The current freshmen class, the Class of 2016, is the largest in University history, and our most diverse. Traditionally underrepresented minority students make up more than 12 percent of this year's freshman class, demonstrating Rochester's expanding reach.

I encourage you to read President Seligman's 2012 Annual Diversity Report. While providing numerical information about diverse representation on campus, it also simultaneously highlights the progress we have made, and the progress we have yet to make. President Seligman notes, "We've made great progress in creating conversations that will help create as welcoming and inclusive and diverse a campus as possible. ... Our future as a University will increasingly be one of racial, gender, ethnic, and intellectual diversity."

On behalf of the Office of Alumni Relations, I wish you and yours a happy holiday season, and a safe and prosperous New Year.

Meliora,

Karla Hatley

Associate Director of Affinity and Multicultural Engagement
