 Dr. Motoyama's New Publication
 "The World of Religious Experiences"

We are pleased to announce Dr. Motoyama's new publication.

Dr. Motoyama had his eighty-eighth birthday celebration on December 2013 in Japan, and as one of the commemoration projects of his birthday, we published The World of Religious Experiences in English.

The World of Religious Experiences is a collection of articles written by Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama from about 1955 until the beginning of 1960. The articles were first brought together for the purposes of his doctoral dissertation, and for which he received his Doctor of Literature degree (philosophy, electrophysiology) in March 1962. In 1963, the articles were published together as a book under the title, The World of Religious Experiences, which was Dr. Motoyama's first book length publication.

Through these articles, Dr. Motoyama has tried to research into the existence the characteristics of religious experiences with metaphysical-ontological elucidation and statistical analysis of electrophysiological experiments based upon his own religious experiences. This collection of research articles is the foundation of the "Motoyama Philosophy." The articles clarify that the world of religious experiences are a true world, which sincerely relates to the basis of human existence. This insight comes from the integration of his deepened religious practices and physiological-physical-experimental studies.

We believe that it is very meaningful to have this publication, the foundation of "Motoyama Philosophy," available to the world in time for his eighty-eighth birthday.

This book is now available in the CIHS online bookstore.

"Islam and Sufism:
Science of Applied Mysticism"

By Sharon Mijares, Ph.D.

Sadly, the media fills hearts and minds with an extremely limited view of Islam. For this reason it is more important than ever to understand the true meaning if Islam (peace). This course will explore the foundation of Islam, including its founder the Prophet Muhammad. Similar to other world religions it has superstitious, dogmatic, conservative and mystical interpretations. Students will be introduced to each of these as well as ancient and contemporary issues regarding gender. For example, in the Quranic creation story, Adam and Eve are two sides of the same being. Now that is interesting and worth exploring! What happened? How many know that women in Islam have always had more property rights and the right to divorce and, in fact, more so than any other religious tradition? The media fails to provide an accurate image of the diversity in this area. As a result of taking this course, students will become more knowledgeable of a wider perspective of Islamic influences. For example, given our limited knowledge of Islam, how many are aware that the great 12thcentury Sufi Master Ibn al Arabi, a widely read Sufi philosopher and teacher, proclaimed the following:

O Marvel! a garden amidst the flames.
My heart has become capable of every form:
it is a pasture for gazelles and a convent for Christian monks,
and a temple for idols and the pilgrim's Kaa'ba,
and the tables of the Torah and the book of the Quran.
I follow the religion of Love: whatever way Love's camels take,
that is my religion and my faith.

'Tarjuman al-Ashwaq'. Theosophical Publishing House, 1911. Poem XI.

This is an incredibly inclusive proclamation, once that includes all religious traditions. Those who take this course will be introduced to a wide variety of perspectives, behaviors and practices.

The Native Middle Eastern Sufi tradition enables practitioners to understand their inner reality, to find purpose in life, and to recognize diversity in feelings and interior states. Islamic and Sufic architecture, science, art, poetry and music are intended to bring the follower to the recognition of a greater reality. In fact, the science of Alchemy began to spread with early Islamic Sufi masters. It impacts all Sufi orders to this day as each one uses specific ancient practices known to awaken heart, body and mind.

Sufism teaches a scientific application of alchemical spiritual practices enabling human beings to enter into a relationship with the divine. These healing processes also enable practitioners to discover healthy ways to relate to self and others. Stages of development are facilitated by movement, sound, breathing, body awareness, and depth work with the inner self.

I will end with the suggestion that you view this lovely meditation (click to turn off any ads that pop up) and drink in this beauty.

"Basic Notions of Biophysics"

By Dr. Nandini Katre

Greetings to the CIHS Community. I am excited and happy to join the CIHS community as an adjunct professor this Winter quarter. I will teach the class, Basic Notions of Biophysics. My formal training has been in biophysics and biochemistry, with a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. My research has been in the field of bioenergetics, and on the structure and function of proteins and their application in therapy. In conjunction with this research, I have studied and practiced Buddhist and Vedic religious philosophy for thirty five years. For the last several years, I have also expanded my research and teaching in combining quantum science and spirituality.   Having been raised in India, I have witnessed and experienced both the logical and magical dimensions of life. Thus, in this CIHS course in biophysics, I plan to teach not just the logical aspects of the science but also the magical, which help us in our evolution in consciousness. I am thrilled to bring my life's work and passion of merging science and spirituality to CIHS, and I invite you to join me in this class, as we explore the hidden connections in biophysics together.
Interested students, please feel free to email me with any queries. Thank you. I look forward to working with students from varied personal and professional backgrounds, and interacting more with the CIHS community.
