Dear CIHS Community Members, I hope everyone is enjoying summer. We have two main articles in this newsletter. The first is from Dr. Hope Umansky, who reflects on CIHS' uniqueness as it was displayed in the student and community research presented at CIHS' SER*Talks. The second article is from Dr. Tim Laporte, Program Director of Comparative Religion, and Philosophy. Dr. Laporte reflects on his experience at the SER*Talks as a speaker as well as attendee. As a community, we were fortunate enough to have keynote speakers, Dr. William Tiller and Dr. Paul Mills, to present and participate in the day and comment on our students' and alumni most current research. The conference was well received and an invaluable occasion to learn and experience the essence of what is unique about CIHS and its students-- the integrative view of science, spirituality, and healing. This week marked the beginning of Summer quarter. If you are a CIHS student and have not yet registered for a course for some reason, please consult with Dr. Umansky and register for the class you need to take no later than July 14. If you are a CIHS community member who is interested in taking a class this summer, some are open for auditors. Please contact me if you are interested. Auditing a class is a great introduction to CIHS' programs and innovative curriculum. If you have any questions about the conference, our programs, or CIHS in general, please contact Dr. Umansky ( Hope_Umansky@cihs.edu). We hope to see you soon
Sincerely, Hideki Baba, Ph.D. Hideki_Baba@cihs.edu

Message from the Dean:

Hi CIHS Community,
Happy July CIHS Community. It seems fitting that we closed June celebrating the spirit of independent scholarship and inquiry with CIHS' first SER*Talks (Subtle Energy Research Talks). During this daylong fast paced event, students and alumni shared, via 20-minute presentations (and/or poster board presentations), their current research. When we, as an administrative team, were putting this day together months ago to try something different, something that highlighted the amazing work our students do, we were not sure how it would unfold. The students/alumni presented cutting-edge research with the utmost of professionalism and it was a pleasure to just take it in throughout the day. There was a large community showing of very preeminent leaders in the field of integrative medicine and science, including an introduction by Dr. Paul Mills, a presentation on the relevance of integral theory by Dr. Thomas Brophy, and Dr. Bill Tiller closed this exciting day.
It is clear that CIHS students' entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well as these pioneers light the path for those students who are just beginning their course of study or who may apply to CIHS in the future. I want to thank all of the people who participated including Dr. Mills, Dr. Brophy, and Dr. Tiller and a special thank you to the CIHS students/alumni who were brave enough to share their research with us: Dr. Daniel Harner, Dr. James Mattioda, Jaya Pancholy, Frank Maye, Chiara Marrapodi (who right after the SER Talks earned an emerging scientist medal award-see more below. Congratulations, Chiara), Terry Brabham, Eileen McKusick, Tiffany Barsotti, Dr. Ron Strader, Dr. Tim Laporte, Jesse Kipperman, and current PhD student Nathanael Altmeyer. I also want to thank the students/researchers who put together beautiful poster presentations to represent their current work: Dr. Tamara Goldsby, Katherine Dublinksi, Dr. Misha Goussev, Dr. Shin Lin, et al., which includes CIHS professor Dr. Gaetan Chevalier, and the Psk Tek device research poster by CIHS Integral Health student, Jessica Luibrand. As the Dean, I was able to sit back and observe the day's activities. Sitting in the audience, I was so proud of our stellar student body and impressed by the independent spirit of inquiry that resides in CIHS' academic community. I look forward to more events like this where the students and the established subtle energy studies/science community intersect, and we can celebrate the spirit of independent and diverse thought and research.
The SER* Talks will now be held on a biannual basis, and it will alternate with the regular subtle energy science conference. We will be requesting proposals for the 2016 summer conference soon. The dates of the subtle energy conference will be July 9 and 10, 2016.
We are now preparing for Fall quarter which begins September 29, 2015. Fall quarter registration will be September 14-18, 2015. If you are interested in seeing how CIHS' innovative degree programs can support you in your development as an independent scholar, researcher, and/or presenter, please feel free to reach out to me. We have niche MA and PhD programs designed to support scholarship in Clinical and Integral Psychology, Comparative Religion and Philosophy, Integral Health (subtle energy studies/integral sciences) and a specialized Bachelor's degree completion program. I am more than happy to set aside time to meet with you to discuss how CIHS and your interests may intersect.
Have a wonderful July!
Hope Umansky, PhD

Message from CRP Program Director

Greetings CIHS Community!
Spring has turned to summer here in Southern California, and "May Grey" and "June Gloom" are finally giving way to sunshine and blue skies. The changing of the seasons also means that it is the beginning of a new academic quarter at CIHS, and perhaps a fitting time for me to reflect on my first quarter as the CRP Program Director. Over the last three months I have had the opportunity to interact with many of you via email or in-person at our campus. I have also had the opportunity to work with a smaller group of students on independent study projects, theses, or dissertations. In these intimate settings, I am routinely struck by the ingenuity, enthusiasm, and high-level work that our graduate students produce. This is especially impressive given the nontraditional fields of study that most of our students are researching. Nowhere was the excellence and enthusiasm of our researchers more apparent than at our Subtle Energy Research (SER) Talks, Student Research Symposium on Saturday, June 20. For me, this was the real highlight of the quarter. Beginning with Daniel Harner's dissertation defense on Friday June 19, the CIHS campus was for two days buzzing and brimming with energy, intellect, and excitement as our community came together to celebrate the many ways in which our students and graduates are blazing new paths toward the understanding and application of subtle energy phenomena. Those of you who were present I'm sure share the conclusion that the conference reflected well on our student body, and for those of you who were not able to attend, I hope that you will be able to contribute and participate at our next SER Talks Symposium in 2017. In the meantime, we have just over three months until the 2015 Graduation Ceremony on September 12, and I wish everyone who is working on finishing up coursework and/or theses happy writing and great success in completing your degrees.
Best wishes to all,
Tim Laporte, Ph.D.

"The World of Religious Experiences"
We are pleased to announce Dr. Motoyama's new publication.
Dr. Motoyama had his eighty-eighth birthday celebration on December 2013 in Japan, and as one of the commemoration projects of his birthday, we published The World of Religious Experiences in English.
The World of Religious Experiences is a collection of articles written by Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama from about 1955 until the beginning of 1960. The articles were first brought together for the purposes of his doctoral dissertation, and for which he received his Doctor of Literature degree (philosophy, electrophysiology) in March 1962. In 1963, the articles were published together as a book under the title, The World of Religious Experiences, which was Dr. Motoyama's first book length publication.
Through these articles, Dr. Motoyama has tried to research into the existence the characteristics of religious experiences with metaphysical-ontological elucidation and statistical analysis of electrophysiological experiments based upon his own religious experiences. This collection of research articles is the foundation of the "Motoyama Philosophy." The articles clarify that the world of religious experiences are a true world, which sincerely relates to the basis of human existence. This insight comes from the integration of his deepened religious practices and physiological-physical-experimental studies.
We believe that it is very meaningful to have this publication, the foundation of "Motoyama Philosophy," available to the world in time for his eighty-eighth birthday.

Sound Meditation at CIHS - 2015
| |
by Tamara Goldsby, Ph.D.
CIHS is pleased to invite you to experience wonderful sound healing meditations. Relax in the soothing sounds and vibrations produced by Tibetan singing bowls, crystal bowls, gongs, and bells. Please visit http://deepsoundmeditation.org/ for more information about sound meditations.
- Sound meditations are every Wednesday from 6:30pm - 8pm at CIHS through the first Wednesday in June. A $10 donation is requested.
- While these gatherings are called sound meditations, the beneficial energy is created by the attendees, as well as the sound healers. We call these attendees the Bishwa Seva Community. This community is a gathering of regular meditators, yoga practitioners, experienced healers, artists, musicians, international travelers, community volunteers, conscious self-healers, and old souls. We welcome the CIHS community at these powerful sound healing events.
Proceeds of the meditation events go to the Bishwa Seva Foundation (founded by master sound healer Deep Deoja) which supports a school and orphanage in Nepal: http://bishwaseva.org/
Namaste.
