June/2015

Dear CIHS community,

CIHS' June newsletter has several articles detailing our exciting summer events. First, there is an announcement from our Dean, Dr. Hope Umansky, about the Summer course schedule. Registration week for summer quarter classes is June 15 to 19.

In the Summer quarter course list, our Subtle Energy Research (SER) Student Symposium will be offered to students as a course on campus (2 units) so please make a note of this course in your calendar if you are planning to attend. In addition, the Symposium is open to the community for a $20 Registration fee. We will be having food trucks to purchase lunch in the courtyard, and light appetizers during our celebratory social hour from 6 pm- 7:30 pm. This conference is a great way to immerse yourself in the student and larger CIHS community. For more information regarding SER*Talks, please visit our website or see the article below. CIHS is in active registration for our SER Symposium, and space is limited so please register as soon as possible. (Registration) (Flyer

Lastly, we are hosting an open forum dissertation defense for PhD candidate, Mr. Daniel Harner, on Friday, June 19, from 2pm to 5 pm in the Conference Hall on campus. His dissertation is entitled, Proposal for a Non-Distance-Time Framework for the Healing Arts: Context and Content in the Therapeutic Encounter. Dr. William Tiller, Dr. Nisha Manek, and Dr. Hope Umansky will facilitate Mr. Harner's dissertation defense preceded by a presentation by Mr. Harner. There will be time for an open forum discussion and Q and A. The defense is open to students and community members to see the presentation, witness the defense, and participate in the Q and A. CIHS is proud of the work Mr. Harner has done, and we are confident it will serve as a great contribution to the field of information medicine and psychology. Mr. Harner is an excellent example of how CIHS' unique educational programs can influence your work. I hope you will join us in celebrating this milestone with him.

I hope you enjoy our newsletter. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at Hideki_Baba@cihs.edu

Sincerely,

Message from the Dean:

Hi CIHS Community,

Happy June! Unbelievably, the year is almost half-over and time is moving quickly. CIHS has a very busy month preparing for the first student research symposium, SER*Talks, Saturday, June 20, 9am-6 pm. This event is modeled after the fast-paced, relatable Ted Talk model, and our students are presenting their research. We received so many compelling proposals. It is clear that diversity and freedom of thought is alive and well at CIHS. For students who did not submit proposals, there is still a way for you to become involved in this event by engaging in the Research Practicum. Thus, academic credit is available for those who did submit (Track A) and those who did not but are intrigued and want to participate (Track B). Please see course description for the Research Practicum (2 units) that can be earned for attending and completing assignment requirements. Outside community members are welcome to attend the Symposium for a small $20 registration fee. I hope you will join us to see what motivates and inspires CIHS' students as they pioneer their way through healthcare, neuroscience, psychology, integral health, non-profit work, research and other related fields.

Summer Course Registration is June 15-19. The Summer courses are below. Although we are happy to help advise you as to what course to take, ultimately it is up to you to compare your transcript against the catalog and ensure you are taking what is required vs. taking lots of electives. It is not uncommon at CIHS for students to have a small "overflow" of credits, as many cannot resist taking electives, even when they still have requirements to take. Therefore, if one of the Topic of Special Interest Courses speaks to you, then consider it. It will not take the place of a requirement, but there is no wasted knowledge. Please just be mindful that although it is ultimately up to you to choose your classes, crosschecking with the catalog and/or your Program Director is best practice.

You can access the course schedule here

You can register for your courses here:

TOS: Subtle Energy Research Practicum, Saturday, June 20, 8:45 am - 7:30 pm, 2 units: This specially designed on campus research practicum will offer two tracks so all students have the opportunity to participate in the formative process of participating in an academic conference from submission, presentation, through completion. Track A is for those students who submitted research proposals, execute the presentation, and formally complete an article (2,500-10,000 word maximum) to memorialize the talk for the CIHS SER*Talks Journal. It is intended that this is a formal article to be published by CIHS. Presenters will have to attend the entire Research Symposium day. Track B is for students who will attend the entire day but did not submit to the Request for Proposals to present. After you have attended the entire SER*Talk Research Symposium, your task will be to create a mock Formalized Proposal, based on the criteria CIHS set forth, for both a presentation and a poster board display on the same topic. After your mock proposals are approved, the paper will be designed to be a detailed synopsis of the research, all in accordance with general APA formatting including 3 outside sources supporting your ideas. It will be between 2,050 and 5,500 word maximum. Two units of academic credit will be completed after all criteria for Track A and Track B are completed under the direction of Dr. Thomas Brophy & Dr. Tim Laporte.

CIHS' innovative courses offer a unique lens into these specialized fields. We are always balancing between innovation and tradition, creativity and academic rigor. If you are interested in exploring how a MA or PhD from CIHS (or completing your Bachelor's degree) may enrich your professional, interpersonal and spiritual life, please email me. I am happy to make an appointment for us to see if we "fit." Usually, by the time people find CIHS, it is time for them to embark upon a course of study. It becomes something they have to do. Most prospective students say the program 'speaks to them' or 'they are so happy to be free to research topics in a learning community.' Most prospective and current CIHS students state that CIHS feels like home, and home is where the heart is.

Please join us!

Sincerely,

Hope Umansky, PhD

 Dr. Motoyama's New Publication
 "The World of Religious Experiences"

We are pleased to announce Dr. Motoyama's new publication.

Dr. Motoyama had his eighty-eighth birthday celebration on December 2013 in Japan, and as one of the commemoration projects of his birthday, we published The World of Religious Experiences in English.

The World of Religious Experiences is a collection of articles written by Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama from about 1955 until the beginning of 1960. The articles were first brought together for the purposes of his doctoral dissertation, and for which he received his Doctor of Literature degree (philosophy, electrophysiology) in March 1962. In 1963, the articles were published together as a book under the title, The World of Religious Experiences, which was Dr. Motoyama's first book length publication.

Through these articles, Dr. Motoyama has tried to research into the existence the characteristics of religious experiences with metaphysical-ontological elucidation and statistical analysis of electrophysiological experiments based upon his own religious experiences. This collection of research articles is the foundation of the "Motoyama Philosophy." The articles clarify that the world of religious experiences are a true world, which sincerely relates to the basis of human existence. This insight comes from the integration of his deepened religious practices and physiological-physical-experimental studies.

We believe that it is very meaningful to have this publication, the foundation of "Motoyama Philosophy," available to the world in time for his eighty-eighth birthday.

This book is now available in the CIHS online bookstore.

Sound Meditation at CIHS - 2015

by Tamara Goldsby, Ph.D.

CIHS is pleased to invite you to experience wonderful sound healing meditations. Relax in the soothing sounds and vibrations produced by Tibetan singing bowls, crystal bowls, gongs, and bells. Please visit http://deepsoundmeditation.org/  for more information about sound meditations.

- Sound meditations are every Wednesday from 6:30pm - 8pm at CIHS through the first Wednesday in June. A $10 donation is requested.

- While these gatherings are called sound meditations, the beneficial energy is created by the attendees, as well as the sound healers. We call these attendees the Bishwa Seva Community. This community is a gathering of regular meditators, yoga practitioners, experienced healers, artists, musicians, international travelers, community volunteers, conscious self-healers, and old souls.  We welcome the CIHS community at these powerful sound healing events.

Proceeds of the meditation events go to the Bishwa Seva Foundation (founded by master sound healer Deep Deoja) which supports a school and orphanage in Nepal:  http://bishwaseva.org/

Namaste.
