December/2014

Dear CIHS Community Members,

It is December already, and 2014 is almost over. We greatly appreciate all of your support for CIHS this year. We hope that you are enjoying this beautiful holiday season.

In the last issue of 2014, we have some announcements for the upcoming New Year, 2015. First, Dr. Hope Umansky introduces our course schedule for Winter 2015 and upcoming CIHS community events, including the annual New Year's gathering and Open House, Friday, January 16, 5:30pm-7:30 pm. Everyone is welcome at this event so please RSVP to [email protected] .

In addition, Dr. Umansky announces our summer conference for this year, Subtle Energy Research Talks (SER*Talks) 2015. This is a research symposium presented by our students and alumni. Dr. Umansky will explain how students can be involved, such as a call for papers, etc., as well as how our community members attend this event. This symposium is scheduled for the entire day of June 20, 2015, from 9 am to 7:30 pm. We plan to resume the regular CIHS subtle energy science conference in 2016.

The next announcement is about our annual yoga workshop facilitated by Mr. Takeshima and Paul & Suzee Grilley. It will be held on campus the weekend of April 18 & 19, 2015. In the next newsletter, we will announce a workshop outline and fee schedule. Please join us for this annual event as we progress through the chakras and meridian systems.

Lastly, we have a short article from our student. Tania McGowan, who is a MA student in Integral Health and is conducting her studies primarily from Australia (except when we are lucky enough to have her on campus), reflects upon her experience at CIHS.

For CIHS students, our registration week starts next week, December 15 - 19. Please register online from the link below. If you have any questions about the course(s) you need to take, please contact Dr. Umansky [email protected]

Message from the Dean:

Dear CIHS Community,

Happy Holidays! We are nearing the end of 2014, and it has been a transformative year for CIHS with new students, new institutional mandates we have set forth, including new initiatives that will benefit CIHS in the long-term. Deciding to pursue a graduate degree (or finishing your Bachelor's so you can pursue a Master's) is a decision as much about strength of character and courage as it is about pragmatics and professionalism. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said, "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character -- that is the goal of true education." It is true that it takes intelligence and wherewithal to successfully complete a graduate degree wherever you may go. At CIHS, we are committed to developing your intellectual and research capabilities, as well as the ability to analyze and discern critical information about your field of study. In addition, CIHS' principles dictate that we also work to develop your character and your humanity. In turn, this cultivates empathy that affects your soul. This, the psycho-spiritual development of your soul, is the key to Dr. Motoyama's and CIHS' guiding principles. After all, choosing CIHS is no accident. We are Dr. Motoyama's stewards carrying his worldview out into the world in whatever part we play in that, whether as a student or CIHS community member.

As a school, CIHS is developing character and skills, too. It is maturing and coming into its own as a graduate school and research center. The academic work and demands from faculty and classes have become more academically rigorous as we increase our institutional demands. As I see all of this unfold within the inner workings of CIHS, I see that as a community, all of you have risen to this challenge and will continue to do so as we work toward higher goals for CIHS. As we enter 2015, I am continually impressed with our new and current student body. CIHS students are unequivocally ambitious, diligent, motivated, and dedicated. It truly is a pleasure watching all of you learn, grow, and work toward your goals.

Since we are all about change and embracing the innovative, we are trying something new this year for the summer conference and will resume our usual three-day summer subtle energy conference in the summer of 2016 (mid-to-late July). This year, we are focusing on the amazing student and alumni work that is being conducted in the professional community and industry (15-20 minutes podium presentations to present your work) and within our higher-level graduate work (this would be more poster presentations). This will be a one-day more casual event. It will be open to the larger CIHS community and to all students, whether you are participating by submitting a research-based presentation or a poster presentation with the substantive work you are doing, or just attending to be part of the community to celebrate our successes. The conference for 2015 will focus on the following:

Subtle Energy Research Talks - SER*Talks, Student Research Symposium, Saturday, June 20, 2015. There will be a formal Request for Proposals (RFP) for papers (15-20 minute presentations) and poster board presentations in the January newsletter. There will be specific and concrete requirements that the Proposals will need to contain for both the short podium talks and the poster presentations. Please review the January newsletter for the submission instructions and the submission due dates. Submissions will be open to all CIHS students and alumni.

As a school community, we are excited to celebrate your successes and discoveries. This entire process, from the formal Request for Papers/Poster Board Presentations (details and requirements revealed in January), to the review and feedback process (where your proposal may be sent back to you with some adjustments and follow up items to be made to then be submitted again), to the preparation and execution of presenting dynamic research in the community, is designed to provide experience in an active academic industry conference. Dr. Brophy and I will be available for coaching you through this aspect of the process. This dynamic learning process is necessary training as you progress through your studies/career. It is designed to help you evolve and become a formidable part of the academic and professional research community.

Some of you already participate in conferences like this, and to some of you it will be new. Hence, the poster board option of presenting your research and a poster sized board (usually bi-fold). These will line the conference room, hallway, and large classroom by the bathrooms. SER*Talks 2015 will be launched by Dr. Paul Mills, PhD, Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine and Psychiatry at UC San Diego, and Director of the newly established UC San Diego Center of Excellence for Research and Training in Integrative Health. Dr. Thomas Brophy will close the conference with a summation of the true integral nature that this conference represents. The body of the day will follow the several (exact number to be determined) of 15-20 minute student presentations (somewhat modeled after Ted Talks). The Symposium is open to the community. There will be no charge for students to attend whether you are participating or not, current or alum. There will be a nominal fee for outside community members to attend simply to cover materials (coffee, tea, water, cake, etc). We will be having lunch and dinner food trucks coming into the cul-de-sac for our social times (lunch and then the social hour from 6 pm- 7:30 pm). Your participation in this event, as a presenter or poster board participant, can be placed on your CV. It is an accolade that you participated in CIHS' research conference 2015. Ultimately, we are preparing to compile the work in abstract and/or article format in a journal that will commemorate this event. I hope this change sounds as exciting to you as it does to us. If it is wildly popular, perhaps we will find the space to do both in 2016.

To participate, the formal RFP will have specific requirements for both the presentations and poster board displays. These will be announced in the January 2015 newsletter so please read the newsletters for this important information.

A CIHS Student Reflects upon her Experience
at CIHS
Tania McGowan

When I enrolled in CIHS I did so for academic reasons, however, what I've got out of my Masters course is so much more than that. While I'm learning amazing information, more importantly I'm creating a deeper connection with my soul. Since starting at CIHS I feel like I've come home, it is such a supportive community of people all pursuing paths that add value to the world. It is a unique institute, I know of no where else in the world like it, that's why I travelled all the way from Australia for the annual conference. The support from staff to assist me in participating in my classes from the other side of the world has been wonderful. Having a background in Physics and Complementary Medicine, I've found the combination of Science and Spirit the perfect fit for my Masters. I struggle to pick my classes every quarter because there are so many interesting ones on offer. I've grown so much as an academic and as a human being over the last 18 months, I can't imagine leaving this community any time soon. To be honest it is hard to put into words the profound impact CIHS has had on me, loving it!
