Dear CIHS Community,
Happy September CIHS Community! Graduation is this upcoming weekend, and it is a bittersweet time for me. I have had the privilege of personally enrolling all but two of the graduates during my four years at CIHS. It has truly been a privilege to recall meeting them for the first time, discussing their goals and hopes for the future, including discussing their excitement and nervousness about launching into such a progressive graduate education. Witnessing their journey during their time here by answering questions, fielding academic crises [whether imagined or real], guiding them each quarter as to what classes will help them accomplish both their figurative goals of spiritual and personal development, as well as their educational goal of finishing their programs, has been inspirational. The educational process continuously humbles me (and them, I think they would say! Hello dissertation process!). All of them have grown and shifted in tremendous ways, and we are so proud to have them in the professional world as CIHS graduates. Each one of them has completed distinct and unique work to represent his/her time at CIHS. It is hard to let them go! Hence, this is the cycle of academia.
As these graduates leave, we are also welcoming in several new students this quarter. They, like the alumni who precede them, all express similar excitement and some trepidation in launching on a journey that takes courage, fortitude, dedication, and sacrifice. The rite of passage from the start of school to the finish is truly about the process of digging deep to search for mettle and the amount of character you possess. Certainly, it is about knowledge, but the values and principles instilled run much deeper than that. Pursuing a degree in higher education is transformative, and this is why my heart lies in academia. From my vantage point, I cannot imagine another field where my role would be so comprehensive; being Dean allows me to walk alongside people on their journey, watch them struggle, build resilience, and settle on triumph (senior and MA thesis projects and doctoral dissertations!). Ultimately, the CIHS faculty and administration help them close the circle on this phase of their development. Congratulations, CIHS class of 2014. We are so proud of you!
If you are interested in some of their stories, work, or are simply curious about the CIHS community, you are invited to attend graduation this Saturday, September 13, 2014, at 11 am. There will be a catered luncheon after. There will be faculty and alumni speakers and each of the graduates say a few words as well about his/her experience. All like-minds are welcome to attend. Please RSVP to Tamiko no later than Wednesday, September 10, 2014, by emailing admin@cihs.edu
CIHS current students, I hope you will attend. Seeing your peers complete their degrees and complete this rite of passage is important to your development and motivation, too. I look forward to seeing you support your community.

Please call or email me for course advisement. I am more than happy to help each you determine which course best fits your program and course of study. Ultimately, though, it is up to you to ensure the classes you take meet with your goals. If you are interested in joining the new students entering the Fall 2014 class, please email me. There may be some spots for new students in some courses. We expect some classes to be full; however, if you are interested in our programs, there is time to apply for Winter quarter, 2015. I am happy to set aside time to meet with you in person about our unique graduate degrees and Bachelor of Arts degree completion programs.
Have a wonderful September.
Sincerely,
