June/2014

Dear CIHS Community Members,

CIHS' June newsletter has several articles detailing our exciting summer events. First, there is an announcement from our Dean, Dr. Hope Umansky, about the Summer course schedule. Registration week for summer quarter classes is June 23 to 27. In the Summer quarter course list, our annual subtle energy conference will be offered to students as a course on campus so please make a note of this course in your calendar if you are planning to attend. If you are currently a student, attending this conference as a course is a great way to immerse yourself in the student and larger CIHS community. Likewise, if you are interested in the CIHS active learning community, the annual summer conference is a great way to experience it at its most dynamic.

We are also excited to introduce a new course taught by Dr. Tim Laporte, which will be offered this summer on campus, "Yin Yoga." In his article, Dr. Timothy Laporte describes the course, its objectives, and the practical nature of the subject. This Yin Yoga class will be solely an on campus course since lots of hands-on practice will be required. This is a great class to learn the practical side of CIHS' principles. If you are local and able to attend, we encourage you to take it. This course is also open to the outside community so if you know someone who may be interested, please feel free to let them know about it.

In the third article, I review our annual yoga workshop with Mr. Takeshima and Paul & Suzee Grilley. This year, the focus of the yoga workshop was on the throat chakra.

Lastly, CIHS is in active registration for our annual subtle energy conference, "Science, Spirituality & the Healing Arts: View from the Edge of a New Frontier," and space is limited so please register as soon as possible. The early registration rate expires June 30. This year, the preeminence of our speakers, who are all forefront pioneers in subtle energy studies/science, is unparalleled. Also, the abstracts of the conference speakers are posted on our Facebook page. Please check our page:  http://www.facebook.com/cihs.edu

I hope you enjoy our newsletter. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

Sincerely,

Hideki Baba, Ph.D.

Message from the Dean:

Hello CIHS Community,

Happy June! Currently, we are in the five-week countdown for our summer conference, July 18-20, on our beautiful Encinitas campus. To learn more about CIHS' annual conference and to register, Science, Spirituality, and the Healing Arts: View from the Edge of a New Frontier, please see the video on our event page:  https://www.cihs.edu/index.php/events/

This is a dynamic weekend for the CIHS student and larger community that embraces the true mission of CIHS, which is the integration of science and spirituality. Currently enrolled students may take the conference for academic credit under my direction. Please see course registration for more information.

With the upcoming conference and Summer quarter schedule announced, we will refocus our intention, as a community, on the true integration of east/west science and spirituality. Sometimes as we study and push toward the advancement of a new paradigm it is easy to forget that both -- the true miracle of western medicine and the holistic use of eastern and energetic principles of healing -- are needed. In a close personal experience, I was recently reminded of the true miracle of Western medicine that can allow for the practical application of holistic healing. This entails a necessary shift in consciousness to embrace the experience and heal the physical and energetic body. Sometimes, it seems that the tendency is to denigrate one side when we are working toward the advancement of a new model. However, CIHS' mission and principles are founded on this idea of true integration and that both models are necessary and have their place. This core mission can be found in all eight of CIHS' core principles that Dr. Motoyama created. You will find this integration reflected in our summer conference speakers' presentations and in the progressive curriculum we offer. Summer quarter registration is June 23-27 and the summer quarter begins July 7. Please view CIHS' Summer course schedule here:

Yin Yoga

Hello CIHS Students!

After a rewarding winter quarter spent studying Yoga in Southern India while teaching "Karma, Reincarnation, and the Survival of Consciousness" in an online format, I am excited to announce that I will be offering a course on "Yin Yoga" this summer quarter on campus. The class will be held on campus Tuesdays from 6pm to 9pm (there will be no class Tuesday, August 12, and instead that week will be Thursday, August 14).

As Yoga continues its rapid ascent toward mainstream adoption in Western culture, one of the most welcome developments over the last ten years has been the emergence of Yin Yoga as a viable complement and alternative to the more athletic styles of Hatha Yoga. In contrast to the vigorous "vinyasa" styles of yoga that emphasize a continuous flow between one posture and the next, Yin Yoga utilizes gentle postures that are held for relatively long periods (2-10 min) with muscles relaxed. Despite the gentler method, Yin Yoga is an effective way to release stress, increase flexibility, restore range of motion, and prepare the body for meditation.

As some of our students may know, the history of Yin Yoga in the West also features a direct connection to the work of CIHS founder, Dr. Motoyama. Paul Grilley, one of the pioneers of contemporary Yin practice, is a longtime student of Dr. Motoyama. In his formulation of Yin Yoga, Grilley drew extensively from Motoyama's scientific research on the meridian system and his teachings on meditation. This class will therefore offer an opportunity to delve into Dr. Motoyama's model for mind-body-spirit integration in a practical and applied manner.

This class will feature a strong experiential component. On campus classes will consist of lecture/discussion, practice of yin postures, and meditation. We will supplement our experiential journey with readings that address the theory and application of Yin Yoga and chakra meditation. I encourage local students to participate and also to invite your friends, who will be able to audit this course. I hope to see you soon!

Best Regards,

Tim Laporte, Ph.D.

Vishuddhi Yoga Workshop Review

CIHS' 2014 Annual Yoga Workshop was May 31 & June 1 with master teachers, Mr. Takeshima and Paul & Suzee Grilley. It was a great workshop. This year, the focused chakra was the vishuddhi chakra, and Takeshima, a disciple of Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama and an advanced meditation instructor from Japan, led the class introducing exercises and techniques to focus on the vishudhi chakra (fifth chakra and also known as the throat chakra.) Paul and Suzee Grilley, well-known yoga teachers (Paul is the founder of Yin Yoga), as well as well-versed anatomy teachers, assisted Takeshima during the whole workshop. Paul lectured on Dr. Motoyama's theories of multiple dimensions of beings that includes organized theories of the chakras and meridian systems as well as the systematic practice of Yin Yoga.

The class started with a meridian exercise. The meridian exercise is a series of physical exercises to mobilize all the joints in the body. Dr. Motoyama teaches that it is important to keep a healthy balance in the physical body through harmony with the mind and spirit in order to attain spiritual development. The meridian exercise devised by Dr. Motoyama is designed to release stagnation of ki (prana) and to lead the physical body to optimized balance. Especially during the course of long held immobilized meditation practice, ki energy will be stagnated in the joints, which results in discomfort in the body. Thus, it might be difficult for the practitioner to meditate longer. By learning and practicing this exercise method, the practitioner can regularize the flow of ki energy in the body and build a firm foundation for longer meditation practice, which leads to spiritual growth. After the meridian exercise, Mr. Takeshima instructed us on breathing techniques and meditation. Additionally, we spent some time on Q&A and closed the first day.

The second day began with review of the first day, and we practiced together under the guidance of Mr. Takeshima. Both in the morning and afternoon, we spent more time on meditation. Together we chanted the Heart Sutra for world peace and closed our 2-day annual workshop.

It was great workshop, and we all learned on many different levels from those experienced teacher. For CIHS' next workshop in 2015, the workshop's focus will be the sixth chakra, ajna chakra. We have not decided the dates yet, but we will announce them as soon we finalize it. We hope to see you all in the next year. We really appreciate the support of those who came to the workshop and those who have been continually coming throughout this whole process. For those who were not able to come to the workshop this year, we hope to see you next year. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience the CIHS community from yoga masters who are also Dr. Motoyama's disciples. If you have any questions, please contact me anytime at [email protected]
