May/2014

Dear CIHS Community Members,

The weather has changed in Southern California as if summer is here already. Our May newsletter has several articles. First, Dr. Hope Umansky introduces our Summer Quarter schedule. This includes our highly anticipated Annual Subtle Energy Science Conference, "Science, Spirituality & the Healing Arts: View from the Edge of a New Frontier," which takes place on our beautiful campus, Friday, July 18 through Sunday, 20.

In the next article, we have a special opportunity for CIHS students to attend the upcoming Vishuddhi Yoga workshop with Mr. Takeshima and Paul & Suzee Grilley on Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1. For those who want to attend the workshop and do not need the credit units from attending, there is a student discount for the entire workshop. If you are interested in learning more about the workshop, please read the article below. Additionally, for those of you who are not CIHS students but interested in attending the workshop, there are still some spots available. Registration information is below. This is a great opportunity to prepare practitioners for basic meditation techniques in order to optimize your physical and energy balance.

Lastly, Dr. Amanda Smith, new CIHS faculty, introduces herself to the community. Dr. Smith will be teaching Psychopharmacology in the Summer quarter. This is her first class at CIHS, and her professional experience and educational background are a wonderful addition to our graduate school, especially for CIHS' clinical psychology program. This class offers a fantastic opportunity to learn current psychopharmacological practice in addition to the added perspective of combining ancient wisdom and practice with modern science.

If you are interested in attending CIHS as a graduate student (we have a BA completion program, too) or have questions about any of our programs, please visit our website ( www.cihs.edu) or directly contact Dr. Hope Umansky (hope_umansky@cihs.edu  ) for any assistance. If you are local and would like to visit our campus and discuss our exciting and unique graduate programs and research opportunities in person, we will be happy to schedule a time. We welcome all like-minded inquires.

Sincerely,

Hideki Baba, Ph.D.

Message from the Dean:

Dear CIHS Community,

Countdown CIHS conference has begun! We are approximately two short months away from our annual summer conference, Science, Spirituality, & the Healing Arts: View from the Edge of a New Frontier, July 18-July 20. We hope you will come join us at this amazing, interactive event. If you want to learn more about the conference, please see our summer conference video and speaker schedule here.

If you are curious about the student and larger CIHS community, attending the conference is a fantastic way to meet current students, alumni, faculty, leading researchers and scientists in the field of science and subtle energy who are attending from all over the country. Many of our students have made contacts with leading researchers in the field and have even had opportunity to design dissertation research projects with scientists conducting cutting-edge research in the field. If you are interested in learning more about the CIHS graduate school community and what it is like to pursue an academic course of study amidst like-minds, attending the conference is a wonderful way to connect. While students have the opportunity to receive academic credit for attending, all interested outside community members are welcome to attend as well. If you have any questions about our academic programs, please email me at Hope_Umansky@cihs.edu

I look forward to seeing you there!

Psychopharmacology Class  in Summer 2014

by Amanda Smith, Psy.D.

Hello CIHS Students!

My name is Dr. Amanda Smith and I am a clinical psychologist in practice locally. I am excited to announce that I will be teaching the Psychopharmacology course during summer quarter.

The subject of Psychopharmacology is as rich and interesting as it is controversial. A relatively new development in Western medicine, psychopharmacology is at the same time ancient in traditions such as Ayruvedic medicine. In our current moment in history we have available to us both ancient wisdom and modern innovation. As a result, mental health professionals have the challenge of learning this broad subject matter and making practical sense of it for the benefit of our patients.

In this class, doctorate level psychology students (or other doctorate level or CIHS graduate students with the Dean's approval) will explore the impact of both western medication and alternative treatments on neurochemistry in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. In addition to providing students with a solid understanding of available psychopharmacological treatments, this course aims to prepare students for professional practice, whether as an independent practitioner or as part of an interdisciplinary team. We will use the foundational model of Integral Theory to understand how and why psychopharmacological interventions, both western and otherwise, can be a part of an effective treatment plan. Additionally, this class will address ethical and legal issues related to medication in professional practice.

I am very much looking forward to becoming a part of CIHS and getting to know the CIHS community. If you are considering signing up for this class and would like to ask me any questions about the class or my approach to this subject matter please feel free to email me at asmith.psyd@gmail.com. Thank You!

Warm Regards,

Amanda Smith, Psy.D

  Workshop Description

The Vishuddhi chakra is said to be a chakra which enables us to achieve non-attachment. This chakra, however, cannot be awakened if we do not transcend ourselves to a higher dimension that is beyond the physical and astral dimension, where emotions and images mostly function. It is also considered as a gateway or barrier, as we transcend our being solely human and reach to become a higher, broader dimensional being.

Vishuddhi is derived from the word "shuddhi," which means to purify. It is considered the chakra of purification, where the purification of body, thought, emotion, and karma may take place.

In the physical body, the vishuddhi is located in the throat and thyroid gland, and it is related to the respiratory system, which includes the lungs, bronchi and nose. Additionally, in the oriental meridian theory, it relates mostly to the lung and large intestine.

Currently, in our modern society, we tend to be egoistic due to the influence of the astral dimension, where emotion and thoughts dominantly function. In order for us to be free from self-centered ego and to grow to a being which is able to harmonize with others, awakening of the vishuddhi chakra is necessary. Our purpose of living is to evolve spiritually and contribute ourselves to actualizing world peace and harmony.

We hope you will join us for CIHS' Annual yoga workshop, May 31 & June 1, 2014, with the focus on the vishuddhi chakra taught by Mr. Takeshima and Paul & Suzee Grilley.
