Dear CIHS Community Members,
In the second newsletter of 2014, Dr. Hope Umansky announces the initial course schedule for the Spring quarter, and she provides a July Subtle Energy Conference update. We will be formally announcing the course schedule for the spring quarter in our upcoming March newsletter. We have interesting and timely courses planned, so please stay in touch with us to ensure you receive the most updated information about CIHS' academic and research activities.
Next, CIHS faculty, Dr. Mali Burgess, Ph.D., introduces a newly designed Topic of Special Interest course that will be offered in the Spring, entitled "Teachings on Non-Dual Awareness." This course introduces students to nondual approaches to awareness from philosophical, spiritual, ontological, and phenomenological perspectives. This is a great course to explore self-awareness as well as deepening awareness for your professional and personal practice.
Additionally, there are a few event announcements. One is the opportunity to see an Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT) demonstration (in Del Mar) February 17, before the class held at CIHS March 14 to 16. If you want to learn more about AIT, this is a great way to experience it during an evening. Please see details below. This course is open to psychology/counseling students and non-students. There are also details about CIHS' popular annual yoga workshop May 31 and June 1. Please see below.
If you are interested in CIHS or have questions about any of our programs, please visit our website (www.cihs.edu) or directly contact Dr. Hope Umansky (hope_umansky@cihs.edu) for any assistance. If you missed our open house last week and would like to visit our campus and discuss our exciting and unique graduate programs and research opportunities in person, we will be happy to schedule a time. We welcome all like-minded inquires for graduate school, research, and/or workshop opportunities.
Have a wonderful February.
Sincerely, |

New Course Announcement for Spring Quarter: Dr. Burgess' Innovative Curriculum. Topic of Special Interest: Teachings on Nondual Awareness
| |
by Mali Burgess, Ph.D.
Nondual awareness, variously described as clear, empty, primordial, pure awareness, the natural state, is foundational to many spiritual traditions, and at the heart of the major religions. In Sanskrit, Advaita, meaning not dual or nondual, refers to pure consciousness. From Tat Tvam Asi, Thou Art That, in the Chandogya Upanishad to the interpenetration of phenomena of Indra's Net in Huayan Buddhism, approaches to nondual awareness can be found within Hinduism, Buddhism, Zen, Taoism, Judaism, Christianity, Gnosticism, Sufism, Kabbalah, Bon, Dzogchen, Vedanta, Jainism, Theosophy, Vipassana, Unitarian Universalism,Transpersonal Psychology, other ancient traditions, contemporary teachings, and current scientific, neurological, and health research. Nagarjuna, the preeminent Buddhist scholar, utilized classical Indian four-fold logic, to which he added a fifth, as a form of skillful teaching to dissolve logic. Ramana Maharshi emphasized self-inquiry. Dzogchen focuses on direct experience, the natural state, clear light, and pure mind.
The course, Teachings on Nondual Awareness, will be offered Spring Quarter. This course will explore nondual teachings, and nondual approaches to awareness, truth, presence, and consciousness. It will involve the study of nondual states from philosophical, spiritual, ontological, and phenomenological perspectives, and in scientific, neurological, and health research. The course will review the teachings of Nagarjuna, Dzogchen, Ramana Maharshi, H.W.L. Poonja, Jean Klein, and several contemporary teachers.
The course will include self-reflection, self-inquiry, research, experiential modes of learning, and the deepening of awareness. This course benefits students from all programs, especially those who will include mindfulness and nondual awareness in their professional, clinical, and personal practices. It will be open to Integral Health, Comparative Religion and Philosophy, and Integral Psychology students, and to BA students in consultation with Dean Umansky.

By the end of 3 days, you will be able to treat originating traumas and resulting lifelong repetitive painful emotions and behaviors. You will be able to convert negative core beliefs and desires into healthy beliefs, instill and develop positive qualities, and develop effective strategies for self-care. Workshop Description
The Vishuddhi chakra is said to be a chakra which enables us to achieve non-attachment. This chakra, however, cannot be awakened if we do not transcend ourselves to a higher dimension that is beyond the physical and astral dimension, where emotions and images mostly function. It is also considered as a gateway or barrier, as we transcend our being solely human and reach to become a higher, broader dimensional being.
Vishuddhi is derived from the word "shuddhi," which means to purify. It is considered the chakra of purification, where the purification of body, thought, emotion, and karma may take place.
In the physical body, the vishuddhi is located in the throat and thyroid gland, and it is related to the respiratory system, which includes the lungs, bronchi and nose. Additionally, in the oriental meridian theory, it relates mostly to the lung and large intestine.
Currently, in our modern society, we tend to be egoistic due to the influence of the astral dimension, where emotion and thoughts dominantly function. In order for us to be free from self-centered ego and to grow to a being which is able to harmonize with others, awakening of the vishuddhi chakra is necessary. Our purpose of living is to evolve spiritually and contribute ourselves to actualizing world peace and harmony.
We hope you will join us for CIHS' Annual yoga workshop, May 31 & June 1, 2014, with the focus on the vishuddhi chakra taught by Mr. Takeshima and Paul & Suzee Grilley.
