December/2012

Dear CIHS Community Members,

It is already December and the year, 2012, is almost over. We greatly appreciate all of your support for CIHS this year. We hope that you are enjoying this beautiful holiday season.

In the last issue of 2012, we have couple of announcements for the upcoming New Year, 2013. First, Dr. Hope Umansky introduces our course schedule for Winter 2013 and a few community events, including our annual New Year's gathering and open house, Friday, February 3, 5:30-7:30. Everyone is welcome at this event. We have unique courses this Winter so please contact our program director and Dean of Academics, Dr. Hope Umansky ([email protected]), if you have any questions about what classes to take or if you are interested in enrolling as a student at CIHS.

The second announcement is about our annual yoga workshop, where we have invited Mr. Takeshima and Paul & Suzee Grilley to facilitate. It will be held on campus the weekend of April 13 & 14, 2013. There is a workshop outline below so please take a look at it. You can enroll for academic credits for this workshop, and it is open to all community members as well. We plan to set up the fee schedule and online registration by the middle of December so please come back to our website for more information.

The third article is from Dr. Michelle Dexter, who is teaching Subtle Energy Studies III: The Integration of Energy Medicine and Psychology, Theory and Application for Practice and Research during the Winter quarter. She introduces the course as well as an experiential workshop for all community members, not just students, on Saturday, January 5 from 1-4. Please see details below. The workshop is $20 a person with RSVP and $25 at the door (RSVP to [email protected]). It is open to the public.

Lastly, Dr. Mary Clark introduces her annual class held at CIHS, Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT) and taught with Victoria Danzig, LCSW. This is a great course for any clinician or practitioner to learn and practice this transformative healing modality for trauma that integrates psychology, language, the chakras, and energy work.

We wish you a wonderful time during this season. We look forward to seeing you on campus at one of our many events. May the good wishes follow you throughout the coming New Year.

Sincerely,

Hideki Baba, Ph.D.

Message from the Dean:

Dear CIHS Community,

Happy December! As we near the close of the year, Dr. and Mrs. Motoyama sent a powerful message to our community that underscores CIHS' mission and curriculum. Dr. and Mrs. Motoyama want to remind everyone that the essence of being human is the soul. Here, at CIHS, it is a reminder of why what we do is so remarkable. It is an especially important reminder to us here as we prepare to begin registration for Winter quarter, December 10 through December 14. Dr. and Mrs. Motoyama's reminder to the community is important to keep in the forefront of our hearts and minds as we go about our busy-ness this time of year preparing to celebrate and honor our own cultural traditions, if we have them. Having this high level tenet underscore CIHS' curriculum and mission is what facilitates the supportive academic environment for those who may be considered on the fringe elsewhere.

As we reflect on this past year that also marked the school's 20th anniversary, CIHS is so grateful to have had one of its most successful years. The faculty, administration, and larger CIHS community appreciate all of our students and active community members who make CIHS such a special school and graduate institute by bringing your passion to help usher in this age of integration and this shift toward wholeness in our careers, practices, and lives. We are also especially grateful for the opportunity CIHS provides to study what was once considered alternative but is now considered complementary -that is the interaction of the mind, body, spirit connection in clinical practice, in the healing arts, in research, in academia, and in science, to name a few of the areas impacted by this shift. We truly believe that CIHS' innovative curriculum and courses of study that are increasingly becoming welcome in the broader community are now even a necessary course of study in these fields. CIHS is grateful to have this opportunity to serve the subtle energy community and those students passionate about earning graduate degrees that support the growing legitimacy of these fields in the mainstream.

As the Dean and CIHS alum, I am afforded a unique perspective on this niche that CIHS offers of providing conventional degrees with a wholly unconventional curriculum. It is also a special opportunity for me to be able to take classes on campus and experience what current CIHS students and other community members learn. This past weekend, I completed the Advanced Pranic Healing course series taught by Dr. Mary Clark. Each year, CIHS offers the Pranic Healing series over the course of a few weekends in the Fall and Spring on campus. Dr. Clark's expertise is unique as she is a licensed psychologist and marriage, family therapist in private practice, and Dr. Clark is also certified as a Pranic Healing instructor and healer who studied under the modality's founder. She provides a strong academic background into the why these modalities work and how they function within our energetic fields along with the practical application of the skills. Winter quarter Dr. Mary Clark and Victoria Danzig, LCSW, are offering Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT formerly known as Seemorg Matrix) on campus the weekend of March 15-17. I had the opportunity to take this course last year, and it was eye opening. In brief, AIT is a transformative modality to heal trauma through language and the chakras and energy systems. Personally, it served as a bridge between my clinical experience and my knowledge of subtle energy studies. These courses are all experiential where you learn through supervised practice throughout the weekend. They are a fantastic journey into the healing arts and alternatives to traditional psychotherapy and/or treatments. I highly recommend it to all of our Integral Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and Integral Health students. Additionally, it is also open to CIHS community members involved in the human sciences and/or healing arts.

This Winter quarter also begins the third of Dr. Michelle Dexter's course series entitled Subtle Energy Studies: the Integration of Energy Medicine and Psychology, Theory and Application for Practice and Research. This course will be focused on integrating spirituality with energy methods for healing in practice. This course has no prerequisite and is open to students and community members, even if you have not had one or both of the others in the sequence. Dr. Dexter's energy medicine/psychology series has been some of our most popular courses ever. Additionally, Dr. Dexter will be offering a workshop to students and everyone in the community who is interested in an experiential afternoon of practical energy methods for healing, for either yourself or your practice. This workshop will be on the CIHS campus, Saturday, January 5, from 1-4, and is $20 a person with RSVP to [email protected] ($25 at the door). I hope to see you all there whether you are just curious as to what this is all about or a CIHS student. Everyone is welcome.

Please remember that Winter Registration begins December 10-14, and you will receive a $20 per unit discount if you register within that week. After registration week, you may still register for classes but at the full tuition rate. The Winter quarter begins January 7.

Because of the interdisciplinary and integral nature of our programs (outside of licensure track), many of the courses can be taken as electives, even if they are not in your regular core course schedule. I am always available to individually discuss your plan for the quarter and what courses best fit your goals, program plan, and interests. Please do not hesitate to call, email, or even make an appointment to come in and speak with me about it.

If you are interested in seeing how CIHS can help support you in your pursuit of your goals and interests in consciousness, comparative religion and philosophy from a non Judeo-Christian perspective, integral sciences and psychology, or clinical psychology from a nonmedical model perspective, I am happy to make time to discuss our specific programs with you. There is still time to apply for Winter quarter. The deadline for applications for Winter quarter is December 20, 2012. If you would like to try a class to experience CIHS while you are considering applying, there are opportunities to take classes as a provisional student. This is a great way to see what our programs have to offer.

I wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season, and I look forward to speaking with you and seeing you this year at one of our campus events, Dr. Dexter's January 5 workshop from 1-5; the CIHS Annual Open House and Holiday Gathering, Friday, February 3 from 5:30-7:30; Dr. Clark's AIT weekend course; or the Anahata (heart) chakra yoga workshop, April 13 & April 14. We welcome all like-minded people to become a part of the CIHS community.

Sincerely,

Hope Umansky, PhD

Anahata Chakra Awakening
with Takeshima, Paul & Suzee Grilley

Yoga Workshop 2012-b The Anahata chakra is said to be located in the area of the heart and corresponds to the heart organ. This is the chakra where love flourishes. When this chakra is awakened, it is said that we can hear seamless beautiful sound or the sound of silence. Other chakras below the anahata chakra tend to function egoistically and work toward self-preservation, but the awakened anahata chakra makes us want to help and work with others. Also, a person with an awakened anahata chakra tends to be optimistic and obtains the ability to prepare an optimal environment in order for him/her to achieve his/her desires. Psychic healing is also possible for those with an awakened anahata chakra by projecting energy from hands.

In our current modern world, we tend to be egoistic due to the influence of the manipura chakra that closely connects with the astral dimension, where emotion and thoughts function dominantly. The anahata chakra, however, mainly functions in the causal dimension, which is a higher spiritual dimension than the astral dimension. With an awakened anahata chakra in the causal dimension, we could work toward love as well as search for truth. Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama, CIHS Founder and President, says that we are now in the transition from the astral to causal dimension, and it is essential for us to evolve spiritually and awaken to the causal dimension in order to actualize world peace and harmony.

We hope you will join us for CIHS' Annual yoga workshop with the focus on the anahata chakra taught by Mr. Takeshima and Paul & Suzee Grilley, Yin Yoga Masters.

This is a wonderful community event that students and all community members are encouraged to attend. To register for the workshop, please email[email protected]

Dr. Michelle Dexter introduces her Winter 2013 Course

Subtle Energy Studies III: The Integration of Energy Medicine and Psychology, Theory and Application for Practice and Research

Given the recent National Institute of Health (NIH) data that 38.3% of American adults use Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (which is a number that has been steadily increasing in recent years), it seems that people are looking for something more than pills and surgery to address their ills. Luckily, exploring alternatives to the status quo is one of the things we do at CIHS. We are happy to announce that this upcoming Winter Quarter, Dr. Michelle Dexter will be teaching Subtle Energy Studies III: The Integration of Energy Medicine and Psychology/Theory and Applications for Practice and Research. This online survey course will address energy health methods that can potentially offer healing effects to body, mind, and spirit from an academic perspective as well as through the practical application for practitioners, healers, therapists, and clinicians.

The previous two courses in the series focused upon energy medicine (body), energy psychology (mind and emotions), whereas this final course in the series will focus upon spiritual energy work. There is no prerequisite for this course, and you are welcome to enroll, even if you have not taken the others. This course will address practical and spiritual applications for energy work, including the following:

  • Practical advice on how to incorporate energy healing work into an existing job, or how to create a successful practice performing energy healing work
  • Ethical considerations in facilitating energy work for humans (and animals)
  • A theoretical framework by which to understand energy and its effects
  • Energy healing methods that can affect spiritual healing, such as Healing From the Body Level Up (HBLU), Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT), hypnosis, and others
  • Chakra work, archetype analysis and transformation, energy cleaning, and energy protection

Energy healing professionals report significant positive effects of this work in others and themselves, including increased motivation, confidence, and emotional well-being. Additionally, other benefits include improved relationships, increased mastery of self, and renewed sense of purpose. If these are benefits you would like to explore for your clients and even yourself, then this course is a great elective to your program and professional practice, whether it is clinical psychology, integral psychology, or integral health. Registration for the Winter quarter is December 10-14. We hope to see you in class.

Experiential & Interactive Workshop on Energy Methods by Dr. Michelle Dexter Saturday, January 5, 2013 from 1 p.m.- 4pm on the CIHS campus. If you are interested in experiencing and exploring an experiential component of this work, please come to the workshop. This workshop is open to all CIHS community members and outside guests. Advanced registration is appreciated. Please email [email protected] to RSVP. The cost is $20 with reservation and $25 at the door. We hope to see you there.

Advanced Integrative Therapy
By Dr. Mary Clark

Advanced Integrative Therapy is a dynamic new energy psychotherapy and healing modality that provides individuals lasting relief from a range of intractable psychological disorders. Starting from the premise that all upsetting events are types of trauma, and that they are housed within the body, mind and spirit, Advanced Integrative Therapy quickly removes the aftereffects of such traumatic events.

** This weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) class will be held on the CIHS campus March 15-17, 2013. It fulfills 2 units of the spiritual education requirement. The class is also open to non-students and community members involved in the healing arts and practice. For information or to register, please call the California Institute for Human Science, 760-634-1771 x101 or email Tamiko Voros at [email protected]

In the Basics class, you will learn how to access unconscious material through ideomotor cueing (muscle testing), and how to move energy through the body's major energy centers (chakras) to eliminate symptoms, their cause and after-effects.  By the end of 3 days, you will be able to treat originating traumas and resulting lifelong repetitive painful emotions and behaviors.  You will be able to convert negative core beliefs and desires into healthy beliefs, instill and develop positive qualities, and develop effective strategies for self-care.

  • Implement AIT into your practice immediately with ready-to-use, step-by-step protocols.
  • Heal old wounds with new tools.
  • Convert clients' self-sabotage into healthy beliefs and positive self-care.
  • Achieve faster healing at deeper levels.
  • Move your clients from surviving to thriving, quickly and effectively.
  • Re-awaken your dream of psychotherapy as a healing art and discover a new modality for treating trauma gently and effectively with language, the chakras, and energy systems, including muscle testing.
