2014 Waterfowl Festival Hall of Fame Inductee: Rob Leslie
The Waterfowl Festival is proud to induct painter, Rob Leslie as the 53rd member of the Waterfowl Festival Hall of Fame. Since 1992, the Waterfowl Festival has recognized the commitment and steadfast contributions of the people whose dedication to the Festival have helped elevate the Waterfowl Festival to be one of the premiere wildlife and waterfowl art shows in the country. To qualify for consideration, potential inductees are those with at least 10 years of significant support of the Waterfowl Festival and can be an exhibitor, volunteer, collector or innovator.
As a devoted exhibitor and supporter of the Waterfowl Festival for the past 27 years, Leslie has contributed to the Festival with both his artistic talent as well as his support of the Festival's ongoing conservation mission.

"He is truly a gifted artist with exceptional skills and abilities in capturing on canvas the finite configuration and details of puddle and diver ducks while likewise effectively positioning his subjects in the natural habitat and vistas in which they live," reads his nomination form for the Hall of Fame.
Notwithstanding his Festival exhibitorship, it is equally important to acknowledge his contributions to wildlife conservation. In addition to being a Life Sponsor of Ducks Unlimited, Leslie unselfishly donates countless pieces of artwork to numerous Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl chapter annual fundraisers throughout the country, as well as to other conservation-minded activities. He is also a vital ambassador for the Festival - often found extolling the Waterfowl Festival as his favorite venue while traveling to other shows throughout
the country.

Benson's Waterfowl: Selections from the Peg and Bob Keller Collection at the Academy Art Museum
 | Deer Hunter, 1924 |
While you visit the Chesapeake Carving Gallery at the Academy Art Museum, make sure you visit this special Frank Benson exhibit. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1862, Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951) was a descendant of a family that had settled in Salem during the Revolutionary era and had prospered in the maritime trade. In 1879, Benson studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and in 1885 at the Académie Julian in Paris. He taught at the School of the Museum while establishing himself as a successful portraitist and painter of interiors with figures. His plein-air works won critical acclaim at exhibitions. Benson joined "The Ten American Painters" (or "The Ten"), a group of painters who left the established Society of American Artists in 1897. Most of them painted in an Impressionist style and exhibited independently. Beside Benson, members included Childe Hassam, John Henry Twachtman, and
J. Alden Weir, among others.
