New iPhone, iPad and iPod touch Software Update
The big news last month was Apple's release of their new operating system for iPhones, iPads and iPod touches called iOS 7. When you see any news about "iOS" this has to do with the operating system (OS) for Apple's portable devices. This is not the same thing as the operating system for Mac computers. That is called "OS X" and the next new version of OS X, 10.9 Mavericks, will not be out until later this year.
iOS New Look
iOS 7 has a new look to it that I think most people will like. The icons on your device screen will change and some of the features will too, but for the most part your iPhone or iPad will still function the same.
iOS 7 Control Center
One of the best new features is the new Control Center. Slide your finger up from the bottom of the screen to reveal a number of frequently used commands. This is a quick way to get to the Camera, Calculator, Airplane mode, WiFi, Bluetooth, Lock Screen and a new Flashlight (which uses the camera flash as a light), just to name a few. Try it for yourself to see what each button does. The button picture is a clue to what it does. AirDrop is a way to send a picture to another iPhone or iPad nearby. AirPlay is a way to display what is on your iOS device to an Apple TV connected to your large TV.
iOS 7 Multitask
Double press the Home button and you will see all the apps that your device has open. Switch to another app by touching it. Close an app by sliding it up. Note: It is always a good idea to close your open apps every day to keep your device running as efficiently as it can and to save battery power. You can use two or three fingers to close more than one app at a time. With two or three fingers slide the open apps up to close them.
iOS 7 Update
To upgrade your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to iOS 7 touch the Settings icon, then touch General, then touch Download and Install (or just Install). This will take almost an hour to do so do it only when you don't need to use your device for awhile. Then be prepared to play with your device for to learn all it can do. (Note: Unfortunately, some early models of iPhones and iPads can not get iOS 7.)
