Candace Anderson Leads Contra Costa Board of Supervisors

Sup. Candace Andersen

Supervisor Candace Andersen has been elected this year's Chair of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors.

She said, "It's truly an honor to have served the last three years.  I have a passion for what I do and it's been an amazing experience to see the difference that properly run county government can make in the life of citizens."

Supervisor Andersen's top goals for the year are to enhance public safety, improve transportation, continue fiscal responsibility, encourage economic development, protect our natural resources, help those in need, maintain the County's buildings and infrastructure, and work as a united board to solve County problems. (Details)

Candace Andersen was first elected a county supervisor in June, 2012, when she won big with nearly 60% of the vote in a three-way race.  She previously had served as mayor and council member in Danville.

Andersen has achieved several significant accomplishments as supervisor.  She has worked towards pension reform.  When she took office in 2012, county pensions were funded at 69%, and through a variety of measures supported by the board, they're now 82% funded.

When the Board of Supervisors voted for a 32% pay raise in late 2014, Candace Andersen cast the one vote against it.  A huge furor erupted from county employees and the public, and the Board ultimately reduced the raise.

She spearheaded the effort to implement Laura's Law, which authorizes court-ordered assisted outpatient treatment for the severely mentally ill.  The Board approved it early last year.

She has also had success in keeping the county budget balanced, implementing transportation solutions on Highway 680, and reforming emergency medical services.

Supervisor Andersen represents Supervisorial District Two, which includes much of the San Ramon Valley, running from San Ramon to Orinda. (See the map).

She serves on about twenty commissions and committees.  She revealed one of her secrets for staying awake in long meetings.  "Dove dark chocolate. I always have one or two in my purse. A square will give me another hour boost easily."

Candace grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii. She received both her B.A. in Public Policy and Juris Doctorate from Brigham Young University.

She began her legal career as a Prosecuting Attorney in Honolulu and worked as a civil practitioner with a law firm in Morgan Hill.  She served on the Morgan Hill City Council in the early 1990's, while she and husband Philip started a family of six kids, before moving to Danville.

You can learn more about Candace Andersen on her Supervisor's website or on her 2016 re-election campaign website.  She will be having a joint town hall meeting on Saturday, February 6.

Northwest and Bay Area Hold Successful Trainings;
More Coming Up: East Bay Feb. 27 and Monterey March 5

In the wake of two successful political training days, there are two more training opportunities coming up soon.  The Lincoln Club of Northern California and CRP Bay Area Regional Vice Chair Kevin Krick host an East Bay Campaign College at the Walnut Creek Library on Saturday, February 27.  The program includes Filing, Coalition Building, Media, Fundraising and Social Media.  Get the details here.

On March 5 the California Republican Party will again bring its resources for a regional training in Monterey.  Top experts will conduct workshops on GOTV operations, volunteer recruitment, how to identify targets, fundraising tools, and how to access and use data resources.  More details are available below and on the BayAreaGOP Monterey page.

On January 16 the Northwest region led off with about 75 attendees at their training in Santa Rosa.  The CRP provided expert staff and consultants to teach key skills to get better organized for the number one goal of county parties: electing Republicans to office.  Regional Vice Chair Elissa Wadleigh reported that among the highlights were techniques for how to get into schools and recruit students, described by CRP Political Director David Creager.

The January 23 Bay Area meeting in Saratoga had about 120 Republican activists attend.  Megan Range, Executive Director of the Lincoln Club of Northern California, gave a lively presentation on how to use Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms to reach young voters.  Mike Madrid of GrassrootsLab, who maintains a database of local elected officials, explained how local Republicans have been successful in Los Angeles, one of the most diverse counties in the country, because of the issues they run on.

I hope you had or will have the opportunity to improve your game, and will put your knowledge to work to elect Republicans this year.

Best regards,
Luis
