Dev Davis for San Jose Council District #6
|
As a community volunteer, a city commissioner, and a research manager, Devora "Dev" Davis has been involved in her community and has developed a good sense of how to improve it. She is running for San Jose City Council so she can do just that. Dev Davis got seriously concerned about city government during a budget crisis, and as a council member, she would bring determination and knowledge to make sure a budget crisis doesn't happen again.
Davis says, "The issues that are most important to District 6 residents form the core of my platform: improving public safety, bringing more jobs to San Jos, and strengthening our neighborhoods. I firmly believe that we can only achieve these goals through a continued focus on fiscal responsibility." Dev served on the board and as President of the North Willow Glen Neighborhood Association, where she initiated a disaster preparedness program. She worked with city government, when she served as a member and as Chair of the City of San Jos Early Care and Education Commission.
As the State Public Affairs Delegate of the Junior League of San Jos, she successfully advocated for new statewide anti-human-trafficking laws. She has served several other organizations as board member, treasurer, teacher, coach, etc. Dev Davis has spent over ten years working as a policy analyst and research manager at the Center for Research on Education Outcomes at Stanford University, analyzing data to determine the most successful approaches to education.
But it was in her role as a mom to two kids that she was connected in a very personal way to public policy. "Our kids were in preschool during that awful summer when the pools were closed, the libraries were closed, and even the park bathrooms were closed. Like many families, we relied on those services and felt the impact when they were gone."
That motivated Dev to go back to school, where she has nearly completed two Masters degrees at Stanford, one in Public Policy and another in Policy, Organization and Leadership Studies. Dev has made several proposals in her campaign. In the area of public safety she proposes more use of Community Service Officers while the city takes the time to recruit and train more police. She also wants to leverage new policing technologies. She wants to attract more jobs by establishing a public-private partnership to help make San Jos an employment center, streamlining city offices that deal with businesses, and aggressively marketing the city.
In addition, Dev's priorities include working hard to make sure that services are restored in the most cost-effective way, fixing potholes and addressing the backlog of street maintenance. District 6 contains the Willow Glen and Burbank areas, among others. (See the map.) San Jose does not permit campaign fundraising until six months before the election, so fundraising just started in December.
Dev was born and raised in North Dakota, the daughter of a schoolteacher and a truck driver. She delivered newspapers from the age of eight until the day she left for college at 18. She earned her B.S. in Economics (Magna Cum Laude) from Oakland University, in Rochester, Michigan.
Dev lives in Willow Glen with her husband Chris and two children.
Dev has a fundraiser coming up on January 21. You can learn more about Dev Davis on her campaign website, devdavis.com.

Get Ready for Action: Attend a Regional Meeting in January
Bay Area Republicans will have excellent opportunities in January to come together in regional meetings for improving campaign skills, meeting candidates, and sharing ideas with fellow Republicans from nearby counties. The Bay Area Regional Caucus will be held in Saratoga on Saturday, January 23, and the North West Regional Training will be held in Santa Rosa on Saturday, January 16. Sonoma, Napa, and Solano Counties are in the CRP's North West region. See the details below. CRP Chairman Jim Brulte will speak at both meetings, and Assembly Member Catharine Baker will speak at the Saratoga caucus.
The California Republican Party is working with the regions to provide high quality training and information to win local races. Several CRP staff and consultants will be teaching how to take effective action in identifying local target races, building a donor file, successful voter registration, and many other subjects.
In addition, there will be opportunities to meet and compare notes with leaders, candidates and activists from neighboring counties. I hope you will join me in attending one of these meetings to get ready for action in this year's campaigns. Best regards, |
