Judge Tue Phan for Congressional District Eleven

Judge Tue Phan, a refugee from war-torn Vietnam who restarted his life in the United States and rose to become a judge, is an excellent choice for Congress in the East Bay's District 11.

Phan was appointed as a Judge of the San Francisco Immigration Court in 1995, after having served as a government attorney in a series of legal positions.  He served as Judge until his retirement in 2012.

Judge Phan explains his candidacy: "As someone who has benefited from America's educational system and opportunities, I seek to strengthen our middle class, the backbone of our country."

"As someone who escaped from totalitarianism, I treasure our democracy and pledge to put our common good above partisan rancor and special interests. For these reasons, I am running for the 11th congressional district."

"As a congressman, I will work to restore fiscal discipline, secure Social Security and Medicare, improve health care, invest in education, secure our borders and improve immigration policy."

The 11th Congressional District includes much of Contra Costa County, including Richmond, Concord, Walnut Creek, Mount Diablo and most of its surrounding area.  (See the map.)  It is an open seat (finally!), due to the retirement of Democrat George Miller, who has been in Congress nearly forty years.

Tue Phan was born in Vietnam and graduated from Lycée Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a French high school in Saigon.  He subsequently graduated from the Saigon University School of Law.

He served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Supreme Court's Office of the Chief Justice in Saigon from 1970 to 1975.

Tue Phan and his family came to the United States as refugees in 1975.  He worked jobs as a dishwasher, then a shoe repairer, a machine operator and a French teacher.

He studied American law at the Drake University School of Law and then passed the Iowa State Bar examination in 1986.  He worked as an Assistant Attorney General with the Iowa Department of Justice.

Tue and his family moved to California in the summer of 1988.  He was a trial attorney with the Immigration & Naturalization Service in San Francisco.

He served two years as an Administrative Law Judge with the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board before being appointed to the Immigration Court.

As an immigration judge, he particularly liked welcoming new citizens - who had chosen to become Americans - during the naturalization ceremony.

Judge Phan is the father of four sons.  He and his wife Van live in Danville.

One can learn more about Judge Phan in this video or about his campaign on his campaign website. He will be holding a fundraising dinner on Sunday, August 10.

August is BBQ Month - An Opportunity to Recruit

August, with its warm weather, provides an excellent opportunity for active Republicans to have some fun and do some recruiting at the same time.

Our Event list below shows that several Bay Area Republican Committees and clubs plan to take advantage of the weather with barbeques or picnics.  When you make plans to go to a Republican BBQ, consider inviting along a friend or acquaintance who could use exposure to some of our Republican ideas in a fun environment.  We always need to grow our team, and your invitation to a new person may be the link that gets him or her involved.

Nominee Pages are now Available

BayAreaGOP has posted two handy pages of information, a Bay Area Nominees Page and a Statewide Nominees Page.  These include links to the various campaigns.  Take a look and figure out who you can help.

CRP Convention September 19-21

The California Republican Party Fall Convention is coming up at the LAX Marriott on September 19-21.  You may want to take advantage of Early Bird pricing before Friday, August 22.  Take a look on the BayAreaGOP Convention Page.

The CRP may consider taking positions on November ballot measures at this convention.  Propositions 43-48, now have descriptions available from the Secretary of State.  They definitely make for interesting reading!  Hope to see you in Los Angeles in September.

Best regards,
Luis
