Pete Peterson for Secretary of State
|
|
Pete Peterson is running for Secretary of State to become the state's first "Chief Engagement Officer". He wants to connect Californians with their government. He is the Executive Director of the Davenport Institute for Public Engagement and Civic Leadership at Pepperdine University. Pete Peterson is a nationally-recognized trainer, speaker, and advisor on increasing civic participation in government decision-making processes and explaining how technology is changing the citizen/government relationship. For the better part of a decade, Peterson has travelled throughout California with public officials to improve public processes on issues ranging from budgets to water policy. Pete says "I see the office of Secretary of State more as California's 'Chief Engagement Officer,' charged with making California government more responsive, more transparent, and more participatory to Californians and California businesses." "I'm running for Secretary of State to change the office from a reactive establishment to a proactive institution that encourages civic engagement and streamlines business development." Peterson's campaign includes a Five-Point Plan. The major points are pay for performance in government, stopping discouraging businesses, using technology to assist government and inform Californians, involving more Californians/fewer politicians in the initiative process, and campaign money changes. His plan includes a number of actions, which you can read here. He would set an example of pay for performance himself by specifying objectives and only being paid for those successfully executed. He would simplify business registration and analyze why businesses are leaving California. He would propose a ban on fundraising by state legislators while the legislature is in session, among many other actions. Pete Peterson grew up in Long Island, Sydney, Australia, and Gladstone, New Jersey. Peterson earned his BA in History from George Washington University, where he rowed on the crew team for four years. He later earned his Masters in Public Policy from Pepperdine University, and was a Public Policy Fellow at the Hoover Institution. Peterson later became the first Executive Director of Common Sense California, a bipartisan, nonprofit "think-and-do tank" devoted to improving civic participation throughout the state. In 2010 Common Sense California joined with the Davenport Institute at Pepperdine University, where Peterson serves as Executive Director. Pete has advised several California cities on the use of online public engagement and data visualization platforms. He currently teaches a masters' class at Pepperdine University titled "Leadership through Public Engagement." Preceding his work in public engagement, Peterson worked in the marketing/graphic communications industry for a dozen years, consulting on projects ranging from online order systems to direct mail catalogues. Pete lives in Santa Monica with his wife, Gina, and daughter. You can learn more about Pete Peterson on his campaign website. He will be speaking at the San Mateo GOP Lincoln Day Dinner on Friday, March 7.
