Mike Wasserman Leads Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors
|
|
Supervisor Mike Wasserman has been elected this year's President of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. The public is invited to attend as he gives the "State of the County" address on Tuesday, January 28 at 11:15 am. (See details. Arrive early.) You may check the supervisors' agenda webpage here for a live webcast of the address or here for archived video. Described as having "a head for numbers and a heart for people," Mike Wasserman was elected to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors in 2010. He represents the south county District One, which includes Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Almaden Valley, and other parts of south San Jose. (See the map.) Supervisor Mike Wasserman has served Santa Clara County very well in his first term and deserves to be re-elected in June. Wasserman has been a leader in maintaining County public safety services, in regional economic development efforts, and in making government operate more efficiently and cost-effectively. The County has maintained its public safety services, despite facing serious challenges created by the State's AB109 jail realignment, which shifted more inmates to the local jail. Mike Wasserman believes prevention is the key to lower crime rates, which is why he serves with local police chiefs and mayors on regional crime prevention initiatives - to stop crime before it starts. He fought to continue funding for the rural sheriff patrol and co-chairs the Traffic Safe Communities Network program to reduce traffic injuries. Wasserman has also worked on regional economic development efforts. He co-hosted the County's 2012 Economic Summit which examined the future of small businesses, green economy and health care. He is supporting targeted initiatives to help grow business and jobs through the Hispanic Chamber, the Small Business Development Center and the San Jose-Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce. He led improvement of the laws governing wineries, bringing clarity and reducing fees for the nearly 60 winery businesses in Santa Clara County. Mike Wasserman has led efforts to pass a responsible budget and make government operate more efficiently. In his first year he voted for cuts in the number of county employees. He also voted to cut county salaries (including those of supervisors). These cuts were necessary to balance the budget without gimmicks. He was the only supervisor who voted against the sales tax increase that the Board put on the ballot in 2012. He has also championed programs to help the homeless by getting them housed, a win-win since a housed person uses far fewer costly County services such as emergency room visits and being jailed for minor offenses. This saves taxpayer dollars while assisting our most vulnerable population. He has also been a strong advocate for the county animal shelter's "no kill" philosophy. All 2,309 healthy animals that came through the shelter last year were adopted, placed with foster families, or reunited with their owners. Prior to his election as supervisor, Mike served eight years on the Los Gatos Town Council as Mayor and Councilmember. Mike has owned and operated several different businesses, including a financial planning firm, a property management company, and a sports memorabilia store. He was also very active in the community, contributing in numerous ways to many different nonprofit organizations and volunteering for more than 10 years as a sports coach for 300 kids. Mike has a degree in psychology from the University of Southern California and is a Certified Financial Planner. He has been married to his college sweetheart, Kim, for more than 30 years, and they have two adult children. You can learn more about Mike Wasserman on his supervisorial website and about his campaign on his campaign website.
