Jim Brulte and Harmeet Dhillon to Lead CRP

The California Republican Party elected Jim Brulte as its new Chair and the Bay Area's Harmeet Dhillon as statewide Vice Chair on Sunday at the state convention in Sacramento.

Both were elected by significant margins.  Brulte defeated David Miller 990-115.  Dhillon won over Rodney Stanhope 880-116.  They will each serve a two year term.

Jim Brulte was featured previously in the BayAreaGOP February 2013 Newsletter, where you can read about him.

Harmeet Dhillon is best known to Bay Area Republicans as the Chair of the San Francisco Republican Party, where she has led an active program and been an outspoken media figure in one of the most challenging counties in the United States.

She has served on the San Francisco central committee since 2005 and was elected Chair in 2011.  She ran for Assembly in 2008, the first Indian American major party nominee for state office in California history.  She also ran for State Senate in 2012.

Harmeet Dhillon was born in Chandigarh in northern India and moved to the United States at age two.  She was the daughter of conservative Sikh parents, her father an orthopedic surgeon.

She grew up in a rural town in North Carolina.  She attended Dartmouth College, where she edited the conservative Dartmouth Review.  One article became a national free speech story, with a court reinstating student reporters suspended by the administration.

After graduation, Harmeet worked at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C., where she was the Assistant Editor of Policy Review magazine.  She attended law school at the University of Virginia.

Then her Dartmouth colleague, conservative Dinesh D'Souza, recruited her for  the conservative public interest law firm The Center for Individual Rights.

Harmeet Dhillon has broad experience as an attorney, working at  prestigious international law firms before founding Dhillon & Smith.  She is a passionate advocate, focusing primarily on commercial litigation and arbitration but also handling some election law and civil rights cases.

She has won awards and recognition for her pro bono legal work on behalf of domestic violence survivors, religious discrimination plaintiffs, and political refugees.

She even served a term on the board of the ACLU of Northern California, after defending Sikhs, who were attacked after the 9/11 attacks.

During her assembly campaign, Dhillon met Sarvjit Randhawa, a retired nuclear engineer who worked for the Public Utilities Commission.  In 2011, Harmeet and Sarv sailed to their own wedding on Angel Island, and were married by a Republican judge.

In 2012, she started her own small business, manufacturing and selling California made yarn and scarves, inspired by her husband who wanted to purchase products made in California. (See the S.F. Chronicle story.)

You can learn more about Harmeet Dhillon in the San Francisco Chronicle profile or her KQED radio interview
