Doris Gentry for Napa City Council
| |
Doris Gentry has been teaching & leading for over 32 years. Now she wants to lead on the Napa City Council. She has extensive experience with business and government. Doris Gentry is also a foster mom, teacher, community organizer and advocate. But her biggest asset is being a "Get the job done" person. Gentry owned corporations coast to coast, serving as Executive Director or CEO. She has a passion for banking, finance and numbers, and was a high school math teacher for two years. She served on a 5 County Regional Planning Commission for 5 years and working as their Business Development Specialist, handled multi-million dollar loans and networked local governments with federal and state grants to help cities re-build infrastructure. Today, Gentry is a member of Napa Sunrise Rotary, MENSA, founding member of Napa County Family & Foster Parent Association, Board Member of Foster Kids Fund, member of the American Screen Writers Association (ASA) and Grace Church of Napa Valley. Born in Southern Illinois, she is a 4th generation leader. Her heritage shouts, "run for government leadership". 150 years back, there is a line-up of leaders in her family tree. "Great-Great G'pa Judge John L Tyer helped define Southern Illinois - farming, serving in the Civil War, lawyer, Judge." His son, ML Tyer, was a school teacher, lawyer, judge. Then five of ML's girls graduated from college with teaching degrees when few believed women should be educated. Gentry's heritage is forward-thinking people who are not afraid to step out of their comfort zone to do what is right for others and their community. Doris believes it is her destiny to work, serve and help every day! Her Grandma told her, "I would rather burn out than rust out!" The motto of Doris Gentry is, 'work until you drop'. Doris is also a foster mom. Life handed her lemons growing up: instability, moving from coast to coast, years of missing educational opportunities and by the time she was 14, she moved out on her own. Gentry wanted to create the kind of foster home she never lived in herself; one that operated on open, honest communication and believed in kids. Doris was licensed in Napa over 18 years ago and to date has had 100 teen boys living in her foster home. In addition, she is employed by Napa Valley College, where she has taught foster training workshops and classes over the past 15 years. Doris is proud of her Community Organizing. She is well known for organizing 4th of July parades and has chaired some 200 philanthropic events since 1980. And finally, her Advocacy. Whether fighting for her friends, the needs of foster kids or adopting yet ANOTHER dog, Gentry listens carefully and acts responsively. Doris has lived in Napa for 20 years and together with husband Jim raised 4 children, 6 grandchildren and over 100 foster kids in their home. You can learn more about Doris Gentry on her campaign website, www.dorisgentry.com .

Our Political Contribution System Needs Reform
Rarely do we have an opportunity to decide an issue that will so fundamentally change our political system in California that it deserves special attention. In this election, that issue is Proposition 32.
Yes on 32 cuts the money tie between special interests and career politicians by:
- Prohibiting corporations and unions from giving directly to candidates
- Prohibiting the deduction of political money from worker paychecks, making all political contributions truly voluntary
- Prohibiting contractors from giving to the politicians who approve their contracts
No exemptions, no loopholes. However, both corporations and unions can contribute through employee PAC's so long as money is collected voluntarily.
Opposing this measure are the powerful special interests who will say and do anything to maintain their hold over our politicians. According to BallotPedia the largest donors to the No on 32 campaign are the California Teachers Association, SEIU, California Labor Federation, and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees in that order. These public employee unions are also some of the largest direct contributors to politicians and ballot measures - and their members fund these contributions through involuntary deductions from their dues.
This is our best chance to level the political playing field and make our politicians accountable to individuals, not special interests.
Vote Yes on Proposition 32.
