THE FIRE LINE:
The Story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots and One of the Deadliest Days in American Firefighting

by Fernanda Santos

Exhaustively researched, heart-wrenching, and, against all odds, an uplifting portrait of the human spirit, THE FIRE LINE brings to life the men who put their lives on the line to bring safety and hope to those in the crosshairs of natural disaster.

Every summer elite groups of men and women around the country called Hotshot Crews brave the elements to fight wildfires raging around the country. On June 30th, 2013, twenty men known as the Granite Mountain Hotshots set out to quell the Yarnell Hill Fire in Western Arizona. Nineteen lost their lives in the largest loss of firefighter life since the 9/11 attacks.

Santos conducted more than a hundred hours of interviews while pouring over records to compile the most complete and authoritative account of the events leading up to, during, and after the tragedy. She has written a riveting, pulse-pounding narrative of an unthinkable disaster, a remarkable group of men, and the raging wildfires that threaten our country's treasured wild lands.

Fernanda Santos covers Arizona and New Mexico as the Phoenix bureau chief for the New York Times. This is her first book. Stationed in Phoenix at the time, Santos tried to reach Yarnell to cover the fire for the Times. Unable to get into the city due to roadblocks, she filed her first story from her car, filling it with the stories of people who were fleeing the city as the fire encroached on their homes and businesses.

Tattered Cover Announces Personnel Changes
Tattered Cover announced several personnel changes to take effect immediately. Matt Miller, previously general manager, has been named chief operating officer; Margie Keenan, previously financial operations manager, has been named chief financial officer; Cathy Langer, previously lead buyer, has been named director of buying; and Stephanie Coleman, previously assistant buyer, has been named associate frontlist buyer.

Len Vlahos: ". . . how important Matt, Margie, and Cathy are to the future success of Tattered Cover."
"In our first six months here," incoming co-owner Len Vlahos said, "it has become clear to Kristen and me how important Matt, Margie, and Cathy are to the future success of Tattered Cover. While we have specific plans to grow and enhance the stores, we've said from the beginning that our number one goal in taking stewardship of such an iconic business is 'don't screw it up.' Continuing the legacy created by Joyce Meskis starts with making a commitment to the staff that helped build it."

Kristen GIlligan: ". . . we are acknowledging what already exists."
In some ways," said Kristen Gilligan, Mr. Vlahos's wife and the incoming co-owner, "we're acknowledging what already exists. Matt and Margie are functioning -- brilliantly, we believe -- as COO and CFO respectively. Making a few structural adjustments to those roles also allows us to turn the direct day-to-day management of the buying staff over to Cathy, who is, in our opinion, one of the great book buyers of her generation. We're fortunate to have such a wonderful staff in place."

Joyce Meskis: ". . . the store is in the right hands going forward."
I was delighted to hear that Len and Kristen wanted to implement these changes and I whole-heartedly support them," said long-time and current owner Joyce Meskis. "I have worked alongside Matt, Cathy, and Margie in particular for the majority of the time I've owned Tattered Cover. Knowing that they will continue to be part of the leadership team further cements my feeling that the store is in the right hands going forward."

"Book Buyer Beware"
David Terry Reports Theft of 3,000+ Books

I owned a loft in Oakland, California that just sold. This past weekend, I moved all my contents out of the loft, including my lovingly-curated library of 3,000+ architecture books.

Devastatingly, my moving truck filled with all these books has been stolen in Oakland this past Monday (February 29)--and yet to be recovered. Oakland PD says recovery is "unlikely," and that these types of truck-jackings are "epidemic" in the Bay area.

The reason I am writing is so that you may alert your member stores, especially those with a large used book market, to look out for anyone trying to sell a large collection of signed U.S. presidential biographies OR high-end architectural books.
