Wonderful Winter Institute 11 in Denver
The Winter Institute Opening Reception at Tattered Cover Book Store on Colfax Avenue in Denver, Colorado
ABA Recap

Close to 600 bookseller attendees
The 11th annual Winter Institute, held from Saturday, January 23, through Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, was the American Booksellers Association's biggest standalone education event yet. Close to 600 ABA member booksellers made it to the institute despite Winter Storm Jonas, which forced some booksellers from the East Coast to cancel their travel plans at the last minute.

In addition to booksellers, the institute drew more than 100 authors, 160 publishing professionals, 35 Consultation Station service providers, and 40 international guests from eight countries, including Australia, Holland, England, and France.

72 publisher sponsors
This year's institute, which was supported by lead sponsor Ingram Content Group and 72 publisher sponsors, featured three full days of programming, including keynote addresses and featured speakers, education sessions, rep picks presentations, publisher/bookseller focus groups, and breakout sessions.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper honors Joyce Meskis
Among the many highlights of Wi11 was an appearance by Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, who took the stage at Monday's breakfast plenary to honor his friend and former business partner, Tattered Cover founder and First Amendment defender Joyce Meskis (see article below).

ABA study "Amazon and Empty Storefronts"
Another highlight of the institute was the release of a new study commissioned by ABA entitled "Amazon and Empty Storefronts: A Civic Economics Study" which revealed that the real costs and ramifications of Amazon's expansion have been even more dire than many people had thought.

It was like "old home week," and we loved seeing and visiting with so many of you at the MPIBA-hosted Hospitality Suite and around the conference. (And the Broncos even won the AFC Championship while we were there!)
Governor Proclaims January 25 "Joyce Meskis Day"
Joyce Meskis, Tattered Cover Book Store(s)
"An extraordinary bookseller who exemplifies every good quality of independent bookselling."

Called "an extraordinary bookseller who exemplifies every good quality of independent bookselling" by ABA CEO Oren Teicher, Joyce Meskis, longtime owner of the Tattered Cover, Denver, Colo., received an unusual tribute yesterday.

"Joyce Meskis Day" proclaimed
Her friend and former business partner John Hickenlooper, Governor of Colorado, appeared as "a surprise guest" at the Winter Institute breakfast to talk about Meskis and then read a proclamation declaring January 25 Joyce Meskis Day<, an announcement that was greeted with an extended standing ovation from the hundreds of booksellers in attendance.

[Hickenlooper] remembered, too, that "Joyce said several times that day that 'the more books that are in more people's hands the better the world will be.' " He continued: "She inspired whole generations of book lovers and helped make Denver into a city of readers. She was also a crusader for freedom of speech and the right of free access to information."

As Governor Hickenlooper left, he said approvingly to the crowd:
"This room is filled with Joyce Meskises."

The Paper Trail
Maggie and Wes Hansen, Owners
Prospective bookstore opening in 2016 in Austin, Texas.
Article below from Bookselling This Week

Maggie and Wes Hansen, who are planning to open a new bookstore in Austin, Texas, later this year, said they are eyeing the neighborhoods of Rosedale or Hyde Park for their future general-interest store.

While the couple has yet to begin scouting out storefronts, the goal of their new venture is clear: to be a go-to neighborhood bookstore for all ages and types of readers. Depending on funding and retail space options, the Hansens hope to open a hip, clean, 2,000-square-foot shop at the end of this summer or the beginning of fall.

Playing off the outdoorsy vibe of Austin and the idea that reading is an adventure, the Hansens plan to name the bookstore The Paper Trail and to infuse the shop with themes of exploration. The name also pays homage to the importance of the physical, paper book. "Everyone's bookcase is their own paper trail," said Wes Hansen. "It's a reflection on their past and their future."

Both Hansens have bookselling experience from stints at Books & Company in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Maggie Hansen, who currently works for a communications firm in Austin, previously worked in publicity for Simon & Schuster in New York. Wes Hansen, formerly a pro golfer with a background in art and merchandising, just completed fire academy training and will divide his time between firefighting and bookselling.

After attending a Paz & Associates workshop last year and last week's Winter Institute, the Hansens said they feel like they are on the right track with their business plan for the bookstore.

"We feel like this is a viable venture," said Maggie Hansen, noting the huge technology boom happening in Austin right now. "We feel like there's this forward momentum."

The Hansens know about the many well-loved indie booksellers rooted in Austin - BookPeople, Malvern Books, and Bookwoman, among others - but they feel that there's plenty of room for another community-oriented space. "We've noticed that some parts of Austin don't have just a small, neighborhood bookstore," said Maggie Hansen.

At their first Winter Institute in Denver, Maggie Hansen noted how wonderful it was to be in an environment with so many other people who were excited and optimistic about bookselling. Wes Hansen said, "The relationship building has been priceless."
The Printed Garden in Sandy, Utah
The Printed Garden
Aaron Cance, Owner
New bookstore in Sandy, Utah
Article below from Shelf Awareness, Bookselling This Week,
and from Aaron Cance

Aaron Cance, a former bookseller at The King's English Bookshop, Salt Lake City, Utah, "is striking out on his own" to open The Printed Garden in Sandy. The 2,000-square-foot space in the Union Square shopping plaza will offer a mix of new and used books. "I call it a self-service family bookstore," he said. "I've got all the usual categories as well as what I think will make it unique, particularly in Salt Lake City."

Cance, who has worked in bookselling for 18 years, noted that opening a bookstore "was always the plan, and I'm at the point now where it was time to do it, if I was going to do it, so I pulled the trigger.... As a new business owner, I'm going into it with all the optimism in the world and all the pessimism at the same time. But there is no way I would rather spend the next 20 years than running an indie bookstore."

He also cited "the steadfast support" of King's English owners Betsy Burton and Anne Holman. "I'm hoping to harness that energy inspired by Betsy, who is heavily involved in the Local First movement here, to rally the indie stores in our plaza and try to collaborate with everyone for their mutual benefit to see if we can market the plaza as a community."

The Printed Garden has a carefully designed open floor plan, and our guests will find tables throughout our main floor where they can rest with a cup of coffee, tea, or cocoa (all complimentary), play any of our in-store board games, or look over the next possible addition to their home libraries.

We carry a fairly balanced combination of new and very gently used secondhand books, along with a number of rare and signed items.

We have a very comfortable reading room on the lower level of our store that is a complimentary meeting space for book clubs that purchase their monthly selections from us. This room is also available for use for study groups or as a meeting space for other organizations, as well.

We're open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday.

Get Out the Shop Local Message with "Find Waldo"
Preregistration for Find Waldo Local's Fifth Anniversary Year Begins January 25
The 2016 campaign, which runs the entire month of July, brings together small business communities across the nation in hosting scavenger hunts for the striped and bespectacled picture book character. Hunts lead searchers through participating stores in their local shopping districts.

ABA member stores have until Tuesday, March 1, to sign up at IndieBound.org
for the campaign, which is co-sponsored by Candlewick Press and the American Booksellers Association. Participation is capped at 250 stores.

Candlewick wishes to thank the 440 indie bookstores that have previously hosted this Shop Local event in their cities and towns - it's your energy and panache that has been critical to making this event such a great success," said Elise Supovitz, executive director of independent retail and Canadian sales for Candlewick Press.

This year, in addition to the Find Waldo Local scavenger hunt, Candlewick is sponsoring the Color Waldo and Win sweepstakes
to celebrate the publication of Where's Waldo? The Coloring Book, which comes out June 14. Find Waldo Local participants who color in a Where's Waldo? coloring sheet and post their art on Instagram using the hashtag #ColorWaldoandWin will have a chance to win one of five Waldo prize packs valued at more than $150 each.

Candlewick will provide bookstores toolkit
containing everything needed to launch a Find Waldo Local event in their communities. The kit will include a notepad of coloring sheets for Color Waldo and Win participants, 25 mini Waldo standees, 25 window clings, 125 prize buttons, eight Waldo prize books, reproducible passports, $1 coupons, party activities, posters, and bag stuffers, as well as a sample pitch letter and press release and social media assets for Facebook and Twitter.

Waldo hunters will be eligible for prizes
throughout the month of July at participating businesses and celebrations will culminate in a closing party at the organizing bookstore.

Booksellers are invited to download the download the 2016 campaign brochure for full details and registration requirements. Further questions can be addressed to findwaldolocal@candlewick.com.
