Red-Hot Show Specials at the Fall Discovery Show!
This is our last e-Newsletter before the Show ...
xxxxx
We have an exciting lineup of authors, exhibitors, educational programs, and fun events involving food and drink!

Amy Daniken from Back of Beyond Books in Moab, Utah
Get a jump on your orders.

We have combined the Exhibitor list and the Show Specials list into one document. Be sure to study the specials and then plan to bring some backlist orders with you to the Exhibit Hall to give to your reps.

Particularly for the smaller publishers and the commission reps, receiving orders at the show is an important measure of success and determines whether they return next year.

Valerie Koehler with author Jory John and Wyatt Wegrzyn from Bookworks in Albuquerque, New Mexico
Valuable advice from Valerie.

Valerie Koehler from Blue Willow Bookshop gives great advice to booksellers:

1.    Bring business cards
(sounds simple but one year I had to have mine overnighted to New Orleans).

2.    Prepare a one sheet to give to reps.
This should include basic store information: Are you near other cities and airports, what's the focus of your categories, and who handles what in the shop? It wouldn't hurt to include a picture. If you are looking to book authors include the following: Reporting to the NYT, recent successful promotions and events, local partnerships, local festivals, and media connections.

3.    Bring open PO numbers and partially built orders.
You know you are going to see something you haven't seen before with those wonderful commission reps. They have unique lines that might just fit your shop. Hopefully you will have received your show specials in enough time to run reports before you come. You might have a "wish list" from your staff or your customers. Bring it and share it with those friendly people behind the table.

4.    Plan to bring your credit references sheet, because new vendors are not going to ship your order without checking your credit first.
Or bring your credit card. Otherwise reps will be calling you the following week for it and things will get delayed.

5.    Wear comfortable shoes --
that's a tip from my Penguin Random House rep. Clearly she's been to a show or two.

6.    Bring your smile and your best sharing manners.
I know some of us (believe it or not, I qualify) have to work up to introducing ourselves and talking about what we do AND sharing our own good ideas.

7.    Bring some big bills to drop in the bowl during the Opening Reception to support our Literacy programs.
We are not doing the silent auction this year, so ante up to help!

8.    Attend the educational sessions, take notes, and chat with other booksellers about what they are doing after the sessions conclude.

This is particularly important if you don't receive regular sales rep visits in your store.

The success of your shop depends on both what you bring and what you take away from the show. I'll see you there -- I'll have a Texas badge and some business cards -- and I look forward to meeting you!

At the Show, be sure to welcome new bookstore member - The Lift!

The Lift is a bookstore/gift shop/jewelry boutique in the Heights area of Houston overflowing with an abundance of colorful, whimsical, high-quality goods.

Five years ago in July, owner Rhonda Rhodes opened The Lift's door for business. Since then, this colorful, historical space has flown on feathered wing.

Just recently, in The City Voter A-List competition, The Lift won Best Bookstore in Houston, and came in second as Best Gift Shop. The Lift has also for the last two years won Best Bookstore in the Leader's new business competition.

Rhonda says,
"I love this dusty, whimsical little shop very much. I love the books, the gifts, the jewelry, the cards, and journals. I love the lively music and varied scents of the organic Texas soaps that greet me as I come in. I love Team Lift -- never have we had a stronger, more inspired staff.  I love 19th Street and my business neighbors. But mostly, I love our customers."
