Win a Fall Discovery Show Meal Ticket and Be Entered in the Drawing for an Airfare Prize!

On Facebook and in trade publications, we read stories about wonderful bookstores in our region who aren't members of MPIBA and we're baffled as to why they aren't.

We think any bookseller would appreciate receiving the Winter Catalog and would enjoy attending the Fall Discovery Show (as we all do) ... not to mention the fellowship and fun to be had taking part in this dynamic Association.

Sometimes it takes a fellow bookseller to hit just the right note to get another bookseller excited about the Association. And it's a perfect time to talk about joint promotions, joint author events, or even jointly sharing Winter Catalog distribution costs.

Enlist an independent bookstore in your city
to join Mountains & Plains in the first quarter
of 2015 and earn a free meal ticket at the
2015 Fall Discovery Show!*

Any bookseller earning a free meal ticket will be entered into a drawing for airfare reimbursement for the Fall Discovery Show in Denver, Colorado, October 8-10, 2015.**

Click here for the Bookseller Membership Application and for some helpful "Why Join?" testimonials. Bookstore will download, complete, and fax to 970-484-0037. In the section of the form entitled "How Did You Hear About MPIBA?" (on page 3), they will list your name.

"Up Is the Renewed Up"

Between the Covers Bookstore in Telluride, Colorado

With just about all reports in, it's clear that 2014 ended strongly for bricks-and-mortar bookstores. ...

Sales at average indies in December rose 9%, according to the ABA, and sales for the year were up 6%.

These results jibe with our reports over the past month and a half on indie holiday sales and mark a striking contrast to four or five years ago, when many booksellers were saying "flat is the new up" or "down slightly is the new up."

Commenting on ABA statistics, CEO Oren Teicher said,

"It's clear that the resurgence in independent bookstores is both continuing and strengthening."

The reasons for that resurgence are myriad: buy local campaigns; the power of such promotions as Indies First and Small Business Saturday; the "return" of printed books, whose popularity appears to be increasing again; a range of sidelines that appeal to book buyers; bricks-and-mortar booksellers' emphasis on what distinguishes them from other book retailers, such as events, community ties and creating a "third place"; a renewed acknowledgement among consumers that bricks-and-mortar stores are one of the best places for discovering new books; more support from publishers, who are daily reminded of the value of their traditional bookstore partners; bad publicity for a certain online retailing behemoth; and last but not least the enthusiasm, knowledge and skill of booksellers.

So congratulations booksellers everywhere! It was a wonderful holiday season at most stores -- and you're directly responsible for that.
