Advice to the Players Performances, Workshops & Events
(603) 986-6253 (information)
www.advicetotheplayers.org
Advice To The Players (ATTP) is a unique company of theater professionals, enthusiastic community members and energetic teens that presents Shakespeare performances and workshops in New Hampshire's Lakes and Mountains Region. ATTP is supported in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts & the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Shakespeare presentations are in August during Sandwich Old Home Week, October during the Sandwich Fair, and in March. Venues include the Sandwich Fairgrounds Stage, The Sandwich Town Hall and The Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth. The December presentation of A Christmas Carol celebrates Victorian Christmas in Tamworth Village. During the school year ATTP offers daytime performances and workshops for schools and student groups and in July offers Shakespeare Camps for students of all ages.
Thursday, April 21, 6:30pm - Pizza and Sonnets
Local poet Page Coulter invites middle and high school students to join her in exploring the sonnet. Experienced in helping people of all ages tap into their inner poet, she will offer exercises and perhaps a challenge to students to embrace the beauty of language and find their voice. Students who attend should dress comfortably, and bring writing supplies. This event is limited to 12 students. To reserve a spot, please email janlgoldman@juno.com
Saturday, April 23, 7:30pm - Group Reading and Discussion: Measure for Measure
ATTP founder Caroline Nesbitt leads a group reading and discussion. Nesbitt says of the play, "Measure for Measure is full of ambiguity, grey areas that exist when holding hard justice against human mercy, and the way both change depending on the honesty, corruption, or whim of those with the power to wield them. The play is also an extraordinary examination of sexual politics. Altogether you have something that is as compelling and chewy today as it when it was first performed over 400 years ago." If you have your own copy of the play, please bring it with you. Light refreshments will be available by donation.
Sunday, April 24, 12:30pm - Celebration of The Bard's Birthday
ATTP is throwing a picnic/party to celebrate the Bard's 452nd birthday. A sampling of Shakespearean favorites -- meat, vegetables, fruit and beverages -- will be on hand, along with birthday cake. Games and activities... fun facts and famous quotes... perchance a bit of improvisational acting. Bring the whole family, and please bring a basic picnic to ensure that any of your family's special dietary needs are met. Please email janlgoldman@juno.com to let us know how many to expect, in order to know how much food is needed. A donation per family is requested.
Sunday, April 24, 3:30pm - Concert: The Silver Lake Singers, with Mary Edes
A special concert will bring to a close ATTP's celebration of Shakespeare's birthday, which is also his deathday. Their music will offer a time of quiet reflection and appreciation of this great man whose insightful commentary on the human condition has stood the test of four centuries, remaining as relevant today as it was in 1616. The concert, and light refreshments, are available by donation.
Shakespeare Drama Camps Sign-Up
Join ATTP in July and August for an exciting journey into Shakespeare's language, characters and plays. The two- and four-week camps are theater experiences that immerse young people of all ages in the art and craft of acting, and the terms and techniques used to create Shakespeare's plays. In the 19th century, female tourists opened up and popularized trails, explored the natural world, and wrote of the beauty, challenges, and discoveries they found in the mountains. In the 20th century, women connected the White Mountains region to the larger world, while pushing the limits society imposed on them. Using art, letters, maps, clothing, and photographs, Taking the Lead explores the role women played and continue to play in shaping and popularizing the region.
