Arts, Culture and Heritage in the North Country

Mother Nature has certainly played a few tricks on us this winter, but one thing is certain: Spring is on the way, with the official start date on Sunday, March 20. Another certainty is the amazing number of workshops, concerts, art exhibits, events and programs offered during the next few weeks by our wonderful member organizations. We've gathered all that information together for you in this e-bulletin, so it's easy to choose what you'd like to see and do as winter winds down and spring springs up!

Bulletin instructions: If this e-bulletin comes through for you as one long text message, click on the Arts Alliance website at www.aannh.org for the user-friendly version. Choose "Join our e-list" in the left-hand column, then enter your email address. You will receive an email from the Arts Alliance. Click to update your Profile. At the bottom of the Profile page, select HTML format. Save your changes. That should solve the problem and allow you to view the bulletin more easily.

The bulletin, for you and your guests, is arranged by sub-regions from north to south and by date. Please be sure to confirm details and hours prior to attending events or visiting sites. Use our "jump to" function (in the column to the left under the In This Issue section), which allows you to go directly to your geographic areas of interest. You can view our complete ArtsNorth calendar for additional details; a link is available in the Quick Links section.

The bulletin lists the events and programs of Arts Alliance member organizations, businesses and artists. If you would like us to list your events (or just to show your support!), we invite you to join the Arts Alliance now!

Please be sure to let us know if any listings need to be updated.

The submission deadline for the next bulletin,
covering March 24-April 20, is March 15.

Explore the Music of the African Diaspora: Kera Washington, percussionist, ethnomusicologist and leader of the all-female Boston band Zili Misik, will spend March 14 to 18 in residence with us, offering school and community programs on the sounds of the African Diaspora and its relation to music around the globe. She will take audiences on a trip through history, exploring the roots of the music, its journey across the Atlantic, and the effect that journey has had on the music over time. She'll offer an educator workshop, a lecture-demonstration and a drum circle early in the week; Thursday evening she'll be joined by dancer Harrison Tei for a community drum and dance workshop, and on Friday the whole band comes north, with an exciting final evening family performance at the Littleton Opera House. Schools and community presenters can learn more here, and you can purchase tickets and register for events here

Apply for White Mountain National Forest Artist in Residence:

Visual and performing artists, craftspeople, writers, composers, eco artists and media artists are all invited to apply for the residency, in which they can pursue their art while being inspired by the forest and sharing their work with members of the public. We hope you'll help spread the word around the country. Learn more and get the application materials here.

"Me, My Friends & Family" Arts in Early Learning:
Our Arts in Early Learning conference comes to Plymouth on Saturday, March 5 (rescheduled from January) and to Berlin the evenings of March 30 and April 4. At this year's conference, presented in partnership with VSA New Hampshire under a contract with the John F. Kennedy Center, we'll share creative ways to help young children express and explore their experiences as they begin to understand their similarities and differences. For early-childhood teachers, care providers, administrators, librarians and parents. Learn more here.

Universal Design for Learning and the Arts March 8:
To fully develop the capacities of all students, educators must recognize both their own and students' learner variability, and structure curricula and develop teaching strategies that resonate with many ways of knowing. Join us in Concord on March 8 for a professional learning opportunity exploring this important topic through an examination of the key components of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in relation to arts-based research. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to navigate meeting the needs of all learners through the arts and how to use the arts in encouraging multiple means of representation, action, expression and engagement across content areas. Presented by Christina Bosch of CAST and Marcia McCaffrey of NH DOE as part of our Arts in Inclusive Learning series, under a contract with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Learn more and register here.

Silver Center for the Arts events:
Friday, February 26, 7pm - Session Americana
No two Session Americana shows are alike. They are rowdy, free-wheeling, modern hootenannies that surprise the sextet as much as they do the audience. Session Americana has innovatively recast the live show experience as a familial gathering of musicians seated around one round table, swapping stories and songs, much like the Irish session jam. Although the musicians face each other, the audience is drawn into the circle, engaged by the joyous camaraderie, playful musicality and charmingly original music by the all-star cast of characters. More information at www.sessionamericana.com

Young children are just beginning to make friends, learning to play and work together. They're developing a sense of independence and a sense of themselves while examining their connections to others. In Arts Alliance of Northern NH's Annual Arts in Early Learning Conference, Me, My Friends and Family, we'll explore ways to help children express and explore their experiences using the arts. We will pay particular attention to ways that each child, each group of friends and each family is unique and special. Helping children to understand and appreciate all kinds of diversity is a critical building block for developing a solid sense of self and for forming strong friendships. Presented as part of our Arts in Early Learning collaboration with VSA New Hampshire.
