Academic Worldquest, a team competition run by the World Affairs Council of NH, aims to increase high school students' knowledge of international affairs and global issues. A grant from the Sidore Foundation will cover registration and travel expenses to the March 5 competition at Southern NH University in Manchester for any interested North Country schools. The winning team represents their state and the Council at the national competition on April 23 in Washington, DC. Register by January 15 to participate. Learn more here.

The Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund is seeking proposals for Coos County and surrounding towns. January 15 is the deadline for consideration. Learn more.

NH Charitable Foundation Grantseeker Info Sessions: Grantseekers can attend one of two sessions to learn more about applying for available grants. The North Country Region session will be held at Mount Washington Valley Economic Council, Conway, from 10-11:30am on January 21. Chapbook Writing Competition:
Sponsored by Bull City Press, the winner will receive a full scholarship to attend the Poetry Seminar at the Frost Place in Franconia. Deadline is January 5. Get the details here.  

The Hoffman-Haas Fellowship of the NH Center for Nonprofits aims to populate NH nonprofit boards with inspired, prepared and ready-to-engage new leaders who can bring a solid grounding in board essentials and serve as an infusion of energy for existing boards. Over the course of five months, the Fellowship combines discussions led by nationally recognized speakers with one-on-one mentoring to prepare Fellows for nonprofit board governance. The deadline to apply - as a Fellow, a mentor or a nonprofit looking for new leaders - is February 16. Two new cohorts -- in the Lakes Region and Upper Valley -- will begin in the spring of 2016. The Center is hosting two free information sessions for anyone who would like to learn more about the Fellowship -- Thursday, January 21, at Prescott Farm in Laconia (5:30 to 6:30pm), and Tuesday, January 26 in the Hanover / Lebanon area (location TBD).

Register for "My, My Friends & Family": Our Arts in Early Learning conference comes to Plymouth on Saturday, January 16, and Amherst on Saturday, February 6. A Berlin date will be finalized soon. At this year's conference, presented in partnership with VSA New Hampshire under a contract with the John F. Kennedy Center, we'll share creative ways to help young children express and explore their experiences as they begin to understand their similarities and differences. Don't Miss Plymouth State University's 21st Annual Integrated Arts Conference on January 22:
"I'm a Believer: Engaging All Learners through the Power of the Arts" takes place on January 22 at the Silver Center on the PSU campus. We're pleased to be working with PSU and the NH Department of Education on this Universal Design for Learning-based day for educators in all disciplines at all grade levels. Learn how to integrate the arts across the curriculum, based on the theme of this year's Educational Theater Collaborative production, Shrek The Musical! The day concludes with an optional social hour, dinner and evening performance.
Comics Artist Marek Bennett Helps Bring in the New Year: New Hampshire-based cartoonist, musician, and educator Marek Bennett leads discovery-based Comics Workshops for all ages throughout New England -- and around the world! Marek's custom-designed educational programs incorporate sequential narrative cartooning techniques into school- and community-based learning projects that explore any subject, from history to science, writing to math. Offerings include one- or multiple-day school residencies or individual programs (assemblies, classroom workshops, teacher trainings and family and community talks or hands-on explorations). Hilarious Musical Comes to Gorham for Valentine's Day Weekend: Not Your Mom's Musical Theater returns to the Medallion Opera House in Gorham on Friday, February 12, with "The Musical of Musicals: The Musical!" The off-Broadway show, performed with live music by four versatile professional actors, parodies the styles of five different composers. Whatever your Broadway musical experience -- whether you've seen one high-school performance of "The Sound of Music" or a dozen live Broadway shows -- you won't stop laughing at this great production! Rated PG-13 due to some adult humor, it will be a terrific addition to your Valentine's Day weekend celebration. Reserve your tickets today and save.

Celebrate Black History Month Through Dance: Experience a mesmerizing performance or workshop (or both!) by acclaimed hip hop duo The Wondertwins! The Wondertwins' February residency will increase understanding and appreciation of hip hop among audience members of all ages, drawing on African-American history and culture in programs throughout northern New Hampshire. The final performance will be the Wondertwins' latest, highly acclaimed full-length show, "To Hip Hop, With Love." The Tillotson Center is the North Country's premier venue for community heritage, visual and performing arts. It features a heritage museum, a 171-­seat theater, and an art gallery where local artists can display and offer their works for sale. The building originally was the Carriage Barn for The Balsams Hotel stagecoach. After that, it became the hall for the Colebrook Grange. Today the Center is a state­-of­-the-­art facility for concerts, plays, movies, dances, and community events. The Center is also available for weddings, family reunions, meetings and other rentals. The Connecticut River Artisans Group (CRAG) is a "grass-roots" organization consisting of visual artists and artisans. The mission of the group is to promote the visual arts and provide support to new and established artists in Northern New Hampshire and Vermont as well as Southeastern Quebec. Members are able to participate in exhibits, receive reimbursement for conducting workshops, and be involved with other art-related activities sponsored by CRAG. Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is America's oldest nonprofit conservation and recreation organization. Housed in an 1868 church on the edge of the Waumbek Golf Course, the eclectic collection of artifacts reflects the town's rural history. Exhibits include the life of Thaddeus Lowe, the Cherry Mountain Landslide, the Waumbek Hotel, old tools, photographs and memorabilia.

Create a fun mug with its own unique monster face; for ages 7+. Pieces will be glazed and fired for participants. Students MUST pay in advance to register.
Wednesdays, 3pm - Clay Open Studio
Potters and clay artists of all skill levels are welcome to join Clay Open Studio, which is furnished with one electric potter's wheel, one kick wheel and one demo wheel, a slab roller, and tables with lots of space. WREN offers electric firing in the kiln. Clay must be purchased from the Clay Studio and paid for prior to use, as it covers expenses for firing and glazes. This supervised open studio is hosted by Maria Neal, who is available to answer construction, decoration and firing questions. Unsupervised clay studio time is available by taking a class and passing a competency worksheet.

Explore the rich history of the town, the area and the railroad through artifacts, photographs, railroad exhibits and equipment, including Baldwin steam engine, B&M diesel engine, Russell snowplow and caboose. Museum is located within a 1907 Grand Trunk Railway station (used as station until 1968), with a model railroad and unique Crockett-Quinn GTR Railroadania exhibit in railroad boxcars. Directions: Route 2 and 16 into Gorham (Main Street). Railroad Street is one block south of Main Street and the town common, near the Town Hall.

Music in the Great North Woods promotes and supports classical music in New Hampshire's North Country in new, as well as existing, venues. During the summer months, the non-profit organization sponsors a Master Organ Recital series and the Big Moose Bach Fest, with visiting musicians of international stature. The upstairs has been converted to beautifully outfitted, sound-proof lesson facilities featuring piano, drum kits, keyboards and all the comforts of home. The expansive main floor houses a huge variety of new and used musical instruments, a try-out room, expanded repair facilities, thousands of music accessories and gifts and room for concerts and presentations. White Mountain Science, Inc. (WMSI) supports Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) e
ducation in both formal (schools) and informal (everything else) settings for the curious and inventive individual in everyone regardless of age. WMSI also develops STEAM curriculum and technology. Currently, WMSI offers learning opportunities and development work in areas that leverage easy-to-use robotics and measurement equipment, low cost computing and electronics, computer coding, and rapid prototyping (3D printing and LASER cutting). 
Even if children have attended a particular WMSI workshop 20 times, each experience will be different from the next. Workshops, lasting 90 minutes, are capped at 6 attendees each.

Beginners or experienced potters will gain a solid foundation or stretch their abilities working with the hand-building process. Whether working with slabs to create mugs, bowls or boxes or learning coiling and pinching techniques to create vases and other forms, Maria's creativity is sure to build upon each person's love of clay to create fun and fabulous pieces. Maria will tailor this class to the abilities of the students.

Students learn new techniques while working on their own projects. The group chooses a single technique to explore during the session, such as bezel setting, soldering or enameling. The instructor leads group creative discussions where students learn from and inspire one another. Students must have taken a prior Fundamentals or equivalent. Materials available for purchase.
Thursdays, January 7-February 11, 6pm - Jewelry Fundamentals, with Jean Matray or Lucy Golden
Explore fundamentals of metalsmithing, including soldering, sawing, forming, surface texture and finishing. Make a ring, a bracelet, earrings (and more). Each project builds on the techniques learned in the last. This class can be taken repeatedly as students develop their skills and personal styles.

These graceful curved cuffs will be made from copper or brass or silver. The metal can be patterned with either the rolling mill or hammers, making each bracelet unique. Students will have at least one finished piece by the end of the day.

Designed for the first time watercolor student and those who have taken a few classes and want to brush up on their skills. Debbie Aldrich will teach the basics of this exciting medium, giving students step by step demos and exercises. Paper will be supplied. A list of other supplies will be given upon registration. Students are encouraged to bring a camera so they can take pictures of the demos.

Spend the day with Judy Erickson wire wrapping gemstones to create an assortment of bangles in a variety of colors. Then learn how to assemble a woven herringbone patterned earring and bracelet set. No previous experience required; just come ready to learn while having fun. Students are free to bring their own drilled stones or beads; additional gemstones will be available to purchase.

The Frost Place is a permanent home and museum for poets and poetry at Robert Frost's former homestead, which sits on a quiet North Country lane with a spectacular view of the White Mountains. Enjoy the view from the front porch of Mount Lafayette and Franconia Notch. Gaze at Robert Frost's autographed books and hand-written letters safely tucked under glass. And, see the Morris Chair in the front room where Frost sat and wrote his poems.

2015 Dartmouth Poet in Residence at The Frost Place: Todd Hearon
The Frost Place honors the legacy of Robert Frost and encourages the creation and appreciation of poems, offering three poetry writing conferences (in the summer months) and two competitions. Study poetry in the beautiful White Mountains of NH at the former home of Robert Frost. Come be inspired by the landscape, write and study with some of the best contemporary poets writing today.

The 4th Annual Frost Place Chapbook Contest - The chapbook contest is a collaborative effort between The Frost Place, a nonprofit center for poetry and Bull City Press, publisher of Inch magazine and fine poetry books. The winner receives a cash prize, 10 copies of a 200 print run of the selected chapbook, a full fellowship to attend The Frost Place Poetry Seminar, a featured reading at the Seminar, and the option to live and write for one week in The Frost Place house in September during peak fall foliage, at a time agreed upon by the fellow and The Frost Place. 
The 2016 Dartmouth Poet in Residence at The Frost Place - The Frost Place houses a resident poet during the summer months. A cash prize, a 6-8 week residency at Robert Frost's former home in Franconia, and featured readings at Dartmouth College and at The Frost Place, is given annually to a poet who has published at least one poetry collection. The aim of this program is to select a poet who is at an artistic and personal crossroads, comparable to that faced by Robert Frost when he moved to Franconia in 1915, when he was not yet known to a broad public.

Dedicated to improving lives and livelihoods, the Women's Rural Entrepreneurial Network's mission is to inspire, create and connect through economic, educational, personal and community development. Along with presenting two open-call member shows (in April & December), The Gallery at WREN presents 10 curated shows each year. WREN Local Works Gallery also exhibiting at Omni Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods. 
The Gallery opens a new exhibit every First Friday of the month from 5-7pm, free and open to the public. These "meet the artist" receptions are a great way for the community to connect with artists, and are a foundation of the town-wide First Friday art celebration that happens monthly in Bethlehem.

Bethlehem Hebrew Congregation (BHC) has been a landmark destination in the North Country since the early 1900s. The 1888 building on Strawberry Hill was purchased by the congregation and established as a house of Jewish worship in 1920. The synagogue houses an extensive library and is presently working to establish a North Country Jewish Cultural Center to display the growing collection of Jewish artifacts.
Regular religious services are scheduled for each weekend, July through mid-October, and for all days of the High Holy Day season, Sukkot and Simchat Torah. In the summer BHC hosts a four-part classical concert series and at The Colonial Theatre, a four-part film festival with guest speakers.
Open in winter for holidays of Tu B'Shevat and Purim, and in May for annual community-wide Holocaust Remembrance Service. Religious school for children and classes for adults are also offered. Permanent displays in the furnished 1878 New England farm house and attached buildings, include old farm equipment, Old Man of the Mountain memorabilia, and iron furnace collectibles. Visit the one-room school house, constructed by volunteers in the Jewell Friedman Exhibit Room. Meet the teacher, Miss Wallace, and imagine what it was like to attend a one-room school. Browse the new exhibit Readin' Ritin' Rithmetic: From the One Room School Houses of Easton, Franconia and Sugar Hill to Our Present Day Regional Schools. The exhibit includes pictures of schools and children from Easton, Franconia and Sugar Hill. In the 1860s there were more than a dozen schools in the three towns. Research traces the change from these schools to the current Lafayette Regional School and Profile Junior-Senior High School, serving the three towns and more. Come try the new scavenger hunts - one for children and one for adults. Participants see if they can find artifacts that their ancestors would have had or used, but are mysterious to people today. 
The non-profit Council operates the Franconia Heritage Museum and the Iron Furnace Interpretive Center. Self-guided or staff-guided tours are available. There is no admittance fee although donations are always welcome. The gift shop has many interesting vintage and new items for sale.
 
Sugar Hill Historical Museum Exhibits & Events

The three-building campus of the Sugar Hill Historical Museum reflects the long history of Sugar Hill's people, places and culture. Main exhibit changes annually. Other exhibits include the Cobleigh Tavern, carriages, a reproduction of a local blacksmith's shop, and an extensive hand tool collection. Adjacent to the main display in the Carriage Barn is a model kitchen in which a black wood-fired stove is the focal point surrounded by a plethora of kitchen utensils in homemade cupboards. The library contains a large photograph collection along with historical and genealogical references. Museum publications and a wide variety of treasures for all ages are found in the gift shop. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.

Visitors are welcome to take a self-guided tour of the New Hampshire Maple Experience at The Rocks and visit the Maple Museum, housed in one of many carefully restored historic buildings on the Estate. The museum includes a collection of historic and modern tools used in sugaring. A video played inside the sugar house provides a virtual tour of the springtime sugaring process. The extensive trails system at The Rocks is open daily, year-round, from dawn until dusk. Leashed pets are welcome to accompany their people on the trails. For visitors using their smart phones, The Rocks also offers a Mobile Tour, where visitors may learn more about the history of the Estate, modern day conservation and management practices there, and the different types of Christmas trees grown on the farm.

Why are humans so fascinated with stone walls? Kevin Gardner, author of The Granite Kiss, explains how and why New England came to acquire its thousands of miles of stone walls, the ways in which they and other dry stone structures were built, how their styles emerged and changed over time and their significance to the famous New England landscape. Along the way, Kevin occupies himself building a miniature wall or walls on a tabletop, using tiny stones from a five-gallon bucket.

Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society Museum & Lectures
In the Village Shops (near Fratello's)

The Museum features memorabilia from the J.E Henry era, early resort hotels, sawmills, Logging photos and equipment, local schools, yearbooks, Tourist attraction, and so much more. The Museum is a former church that was built by J.E. Henry in 1909. There is also a "satellite" museum. The owners of the Village Shops in Lincoln (the old mill site) have given the Museum a store front in the complex and there are numerous photos and early maps on display.
The Upper Pemi Historical Society has produced a beautiful cookbook in commemoration of Lincoln and Woodstock's 250th anniversaries, on sale at the museum, Lincoln Public Library and Fadden's General Store. These keepsake items will feed one's stomach and heart with many heritage recipes, some dating back to 1909, as well as current day recipes from local residents. All proceeds from the cookbook go to the museum building renovation project.

Enjoy an evening of music, mirth, magic, dance and a sumptuous feast - the adventures of Christopher Columbus continue. Upon returning to Spain from the New World, Columbus is depressed and poor, having been stripped of his title and pension. His mistress Beatriz is cold and unsympathetic. His cousin Diego, a decidedly inept attorney, pleads Christopher's case to Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. In spite of all, they send the Admiral on another voyage from which he returns with a special surprise for the Royals.
New: A vegetarian alternative to our traditional meat pie will be available in limited quantities by prior arrangement.

Annette Mitchell will present paintings that were created this past year to illustrate a few historical events in her family history. Characters that she creates called "snoofers" stand in for the actual people and animals portrayed. Her paintings are part of a larger narrative titled Snoofer Chronicles soon to be published. Professor Mitchell continues to teach in the College of Graduate Studies at Plymouth State University every January and July.

Advice To The Players (ATTP) is a unique company of theater professionals, enthusiastic community members and energetic teens that presents Shakespeare performances and workshops in New Hampshire's Lakes and Mountains Region. ATTP is supported in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts & the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Shakespeare presentations are in August during Sandwich Old Home Week, October during the Sandwich Fair, and in March. Venues include the Sandwich Fairgrounds Stage, The Sandwich Town Hall and The Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth. The December presentation of A Christmas Carol celebrates Victorian Christmas in Tamworth Village. During the school year ATTP offers daytime performances and workshops for schools and student groups and in July offers Shakespeare Camps for students of all ages.
