New Hampshire Poetry Out Loud Registration:
Registration for the NH State Council on the Arts' Poetry Out Loud 2016 has begun. Poetry Out Loud is a national competition for high school students that encourages them to memorize and recite great works of poetry. In 2015, close to 10,000 students from 38 NH high schools and other group sites participated in Poetry Out Loud. We invite teachers, students, and parents to visit the Poetry Out Loud page
to find out how your school can get involved. Registration deadline is this November 2 - there is room for only 40 high schools. We encourage middle school English teachers to also make use of the national Poetry Out Loud Resources and online anthology of poems at www.PoetryOutLoud.org
NH Center for Nonprofits
hosts its 9th annual Nonprofit Leadership Summit, "Built to Last? Reimagining Sustainability" on September 18 in Concord. It will be a day to reflect on the changes in the sector, be inspired by "outside the box" thinkers, take stock of what we've accomplished, and get energized by fresh ideas. Learn more.

Meet 2015 WMNF Artist in Residence Ben Cosgrove:
Composer, multi-instrumentalist and writer Ben Cosgrove, the 2015 White Mountain National Forest Artist in Residence, will introduce his work and plans for his month-long residency in a free public program on Wednesday, September 9, at 7pm at the White Mountain National Forest Headquarters, 71 White Mountain Drive in Campton. He'll describe his artistic process, play some of his compositions inspired by landscape, and lead a discussion on the relationships between music, sound and sense of place. Community members of all ages are invited to attend, listen and participate in the discussion. Ben will also perform as part of the White Mountain Arts Experience (outlined below) on both the Art Trail and during the cocktail reception and silent auction from 6 to 8 pm Stay tuned for updates on additional performances and programs; Ben is interested in meeting local musicians and working with college and high-school students.
Join Us for September 13-14 Celebration of Nature, Art & Heritage at the Omni Mount Washington Resort:
Please come and participate as we partner with the National Forest Foundation in hosting the pilot White Mountain Arts Experience, two days of arts, nature and community. On Sunday from 2-6pm, visit the outdoor Art Trail to gain insight into the history of art in the White Mountains and meet, watch and talk to artists and craftspeople as they display and demonstrate their art -- or join Becky Rule on the veranda for informal sharing of mountain stories (all free!). Afterward, join us for a Community Reception and Silent Auction featuring heavy hors d'oeuvres, cocktails and a musical appearance by WMNF Artist in Residence Ben Cosgrove; the reception ($50/person) will benefit White Mountain National Forest restoration efforts. And on Monday, take part in a diverse lineup of free workshops with New Hampshire artists, including sessions with NH Poet Laureate Alice Fogel and master basketmaker Alice Ogden, and an AMC-led Waterfalls Hike. Actor, storyteller, mime, clown and educator Michael Zerphy will bring his school and family shows and workshops to northern New Hampshire September 21 through October 3. Michael will offer a wide range of programming, including two assembly options ("Choices to Grow By" and "The Wealth of Health...Free for All!", emphasizing positive choices) plus theater and storytelling workshops for schools and community groups and several public performances for families. Register for September 16 & 17 Creative Aging Workshops for Teaching Artists: We're pleased to be working with the NH State Council on the Arts and Lifetime Arts as they offer two workshops for NH artists interested in working with seniors. Maura O'Malley, CEO and Co-founder of Lifetime Arts, and Annie Montgomery, Master Teaching Artist, will introduce the field of creative aging, programs that engage older adults in active arts learning. Participants will learn about current research on arts and aging, see what's different about adult learning, analyze best practices and explore how arts education expertise forms a strong basis for working with older adults. The September 16 workshop in West Lebanon is for artists with experience in educational settings; the September 17 workshop in Concord is open to all artists with an interest in working with seniors. Connecticut River Artisans Group Programs & Events

The Connecticut River Artisans Group (CRAG) is a "grass-roots" organization consisting of visual artists and artisans. The mission of the group is to promote the visual arts and provide support to new and established artists in Northern New Hampshire and Vermont as well as Southeastern Quebec. Members are able to participate in exhibits, receive reimbursement for conducting workshops, and be involved with other art-related activities sponsored by CRAG. The public is invited to enjoy an old photo display, a peek into the rich historic past of the area.
The Commission meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6pm in Errol Town Hall (year-round). Open to the public. Saturday, September 26 - 3rd Annual Errol Heritage Day & Professional Lumberjack Competition Celebrate the rich history of the Town of Errol at this wonderful Family Day and enjoy the beautiful Great Northwoods. The day begins with a Pancake Breakfast at the Errol Fire Station on Main Street from 6:30-9am. The Professional Lumberjack/Lumberjill Competition begins at 10am, free and open to the public, lasting until 4pm. Don't miss the chance to watch the "sawdust fly" - many of these competitors are World Champions competing in events like the axe throw, underhand chop, two-man crosscut, Jack and Jill crosscut, bow saw, single buck, springboard, open chainsaw and obstacle pole buck. There will be Games/Activities and Surprises for the children, a Monster Truck Bounce House, Vendors, 50/50 Raffle, Silent Auction, Fall Foliage Helicopter Rides and much more. The day ends with a Spaghetti Supper (proceeds to benefit the Errol Heritage Commission) at the Errol Fire Station from 4:30-6:30pm. Presenting the communities of the Great North Woods with opportunities to experience the musical, cultural and performing arts. The Tillotson Center for the Arts 14 Carriage Lane, Colebrook (603) 237-8328 Center for community heritage, visual & performing arts - a dynamic venue, including museum, art gallery and 171-seat theater. A historical building, formerly the Carriage Barn for The Balsams stagecoach; subsequently a Grange Hall with theater and dance floor. It is now a state of the arts facility for concerts, theatre productions, movies, nights of dancing and a community events venue. In the museum you can see the 1800s fire equipment, as well as barn, kitchen and school room displays, and much more. At the Art Gallery, local artists can exhibit and offer their paintings for sale.

Weeks Historic Site State Park Association Summer Programs

Set at the very top of Mt. Prospect in Lancaster, John Wingate Weeks Historic Site's house and grounds provide a 360-degree panorama of mountain splendor, including the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, the Green Mountains of Vermont, the Kilkenny Range, the Percy Peaks, and the upper Connecticut River Valley. Come early and bring a picnic, or climb the Fire Tower for one of the best views north of the notches. Last museum tour at 4pm.
Sunday, September 13 - Autumn Wildflower Walk (1-4pm, meet at Park Main Gate) This can be a great time of year to get outdoors and enjoy a walk in the woods, especially an autumn wildflower walk with naturalist, Matt Peters. Matt Peters is an independent ecologist and botanist with extensive field experience in diverse North American landscapes from Alaska and the Great Plains to the forests of the northeast. His work focuses on botanical and natural resource inventory, mapping and management in northern New England. Participants should meet at the main entrance of Weeks State Park. Bring raingear, just in case, and suitable clothing and footwear for an easy walk in the Park. Persons with special needs should call 788-4961 in advance of the event so suitable arrangements can be made.

Saturdays, September 19 & October 3 - Dr. Douglas Arion, Director of the Carthage Institute of Astronomy, will give a presentation on the intricate and fascinating connections between life on Earth and the history and phenomena of the Universe. Learn about the amazing sequence of events that led to the formation of the solar system and the Earth, and how humans have come to understand what they are and why they are here. Following the presentation, weather permitting, there will be observing through telescopes. This program is part of AMC's ongoing series of astronomy and solar programs throughout the year. Features displays on various facets of life in Whitefield over the years. There is a wealth of information, along with thousands of photos, documents and other artifacts. Be sure to ask about membership in the Whitefield Historical Society -- individual efforts can help preserve the heritage for future generations. Ongoing exhibits are also on display on the first floor of the Mountain View Grand year 'round and are updated periodically.

WREN Workshops, Farmers Market & Technology Classes
In this 4-week class, explore the coil method used by Southwestern and African artists and other traditional potters all over the world to make larger vessels for functional and decorative use. Students will learn to glaze their pieces in this class and be cleared for independent use of the clay studio's open hours. How often do people talk about wanting to write, but never get around to doing it? Jump Write In is a writers' group where people actually come to write. Once a month writers of all genres and abilities are invited to come out and find inspiration in writing prompts, guest speakers and first thought exercises. Each session will include inspirational exercises, writing and discussion. Writers are encouraged to bring their favorite writing materials or electronic device. Participants will have the option of sharing their work at the end of each session. Open to writers of all genres and levels. Drop-ins are welcome. Suggested donation per session. Wednesday, October 7, 6pm - Make a Clay Bud Vase, with Maria Neal Create a bud vase for all your blooms using the bubble pot method. Pieces will be glazed and fired for students (included in fee).
Thursdays, 3-7pm - Berlin Local Works Farmers Market Low cost outdoor marketplace access for small businesses, operating in Berlin and Bethlehem. Vendors and WREN members who register to participate in one market will automatically be able to take part in the other at no extra cost.
St. Kieran Celebrates Arts, Creativity & Cultural HeritageOffice hours: Monday-Thursday, 9am-12noon & 1-4:30pm and Friday, 9am-12noon St. Kieran Community Center for the Arts Local, regional and internationally acclaimed artists fill the stage with a revolving repertoire of shows selected to celebrate the arts, creativity and local cultural heritage. Season members enjoy free admission to over 20 exciting and diverse performances. Membership benefits also include advance mailings and personal invitations to special events. Permanent Exhibition: Scrapbook celebrating the history & story of St. Kieran Center for the Arts Art exhibits are open for viewing during regular business hours (9am-4pm) Monday-Friday, an hour before all performing arts programs, and by special arrangement. Gorham Historical Society: Town and Railroad Museum Explore the rich history of the town, the area and the railroad through artifacts, photographs, railroad exhibits and equipment, including Baldwin steam engine, B&M diesel engine, Russell snowplow and caboose. Museum located within a 1907 Grand Trunk Railway station (used as station until 1968), with a model railroad and unique Crockett-Quinn GTR Railroadania exhibit in railroad boxcars. Most of the museum and several boxcars are handicapped accessible. For more information, or to ensure the Museum will be open when you are in town, call or email the Society. Admission is by donation. Directions: Route 2 and 16 into Gorham (Main Street). Railroad Street is one block south of Main Street and the town common, near the Town Hall.

Franconia Area Heritage Council Exhibits & Events
Saturdays, through October 31, 1-5pm (other times by request) Franconia Heritage Museum (Franconia Town Hall) Permanent displays in the furnished 1878 New England farm house and attached buildings, include old farm equipment, Old Man of the Mountain, and iron furnace. Visit the one-room school house, constructed by volunteers in the Jewell Friedman Exhibit Room. Meet the teacher, Miss Wallace, and imagine what it was like to attend a one room school. Browse the new exhibit Readin' Ritin' Rithmetic: From the One Room School Houses of Easton, Franconia and Sugar Hill to Our Present Day Regional Schools. The exhibit includes pictures of schools and children from Easton, Franconia and Sugar Hill. In the 1860s there were more than a dozen schools in the three towns. Research traces the change from these schools to the current Lafayette Regional School and Profile Junior-Senior High School, serving the three towns and more. Come try the new scavenger hunts - one for children and one for adults. Participants see if they can find artifacts that their ancestors would have had or used, but are mysterious to people today.
The non-profit Council operates the Franconia Heritage Museum and the Iron Furnace Interpretive Center. Self-guided or staff-guided tours are available. There is no admittance fee although donations are always welcome. The gift shop has many interesting vintage and new items for sale.

The Frost Place is a permanent home and museum for poets and poetry at Robert Frost's former homestead, which sits on a quiet North Country lane with a spectacular view of the White Mountains. Rey Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the Reys' spirit of curiosity and discovery by increasing understanding of and participation in art, science, and nature through programs for youth, adults and families. Activities are a mixture of art and science, the physical and intellectual, young and old, and ever-present curiosity: the foundation for a multi-generational center for learning and exploration. Check website for a full listing of happenings, including snowshoe hikes, full-moon ski trips and numerous hikes. There is no admission fee; donations gratefully accepted. Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society Museum & Lectures In the Village Shops (near Fratello's)

The Museum features memorabilia from the J.E Henry era, early resort hotels, sawmills, Logging photos and equipment, local schools, yearbooks, Tourist attraction, and so much more. The Museum is a former church that was built by J.E. Henry in 1909. There is also a "satellite" museum. The owners of the Village Shops in Lincoln (the old mill site) have given the Museum a store front in the complex and there are numerous photos and early maps on display. The Upper Pemi Historical Society has produced a beautiful cookbook in commemoration of Lincoln and Woodstock's 250th anniversaries, on sale at the museum, Lincoln Public Library and Fadden's General Store. These keepsake items will feed one's stomach and heart with many heritage recipes, some dating back to 1909, as well as current day recipes from local residents. All proceeds from the cookbook will go to the museum building renovation project.

The Voices of the Koas singers are made up of a majority of members of the Koasek Traditional Band of the Koas Abenaki Nation. A State of Vermont recognized Tribe, the Koasek Tribe lived in the area of Newbury, VT and Haverhill, NH along the Connecticut River on the Coos meadows. The decedents of the Koasek are spread throughout New England and the broader United States. This amazing group will be teaching Abenaki history through song, dance and games. Betty Johnson Gray's first career in music coincided with the music career of her family, The Johnson Family Singers. Starting in 1938 and throughout the 1940s, this young soprano sang hymns with her parents and three brothers at churches, military bases and on a daily radio broadcast throughout the South. As a solo artist, she recorded several hit songs for Bell Records, RCA, Bally Records and Atlantic, and made frequent appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show and Jack Paar's Tonight Show. Class size: min 2, max 8 September 21, 5pm - Design and Make Your Own Earrings, with Suzan Gannett In this class, learn to make sterling silver earrings from start to finish. Learn to make French wires and how to attach beads to the wires. Students will also discuss how to use color and design to make a unique set of earrings (students will complete two sets of earrings). Advice to the Players Performances, Workshops & Events (603) 986-6253 (information) Advice To The Players (ATTP) is a unique company of theater professionals, enthusiastic community members and energetic teens that presents Shakespeare performances and workshops in New Hampshire's Lakes and Mountains Region. ATTP is supported in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts & the National Endowment for the Arts. The Shakespeare presentations are in August during Sandwich Old Home Week, October during the Sandwich Fair, and in March. Venues include the Sandwich Fairgrounds Stage, The Sandwich Town Hall and The Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth. The December presentation of A Christmas Carol celebrates Victorian Christmas in Tamworth Village. During the school year ATTP offers daytime performances and workshops for schools and student groups and in July offers Shakespeare Camps for students of all ages. Exhibiting through September 11 - Laura Marconi: "My Iceland" and Margaret Merritt: Abstract Impressions Sandwich print maker, Margaret Merritt, shows a body of abstract work that is inspired by the natural world around her home and more specifically a shattered living room window. Pennsylvania artist, Laura Marconi, presents her dramatic and intriguing landscapes from her residency in Iceland last summer. Marconi has spent several summers in the Lakes Region prior to her two trips to small villages in Gullkistan and Lithus last year and the year before. Saturday, September 12, 5pm - Opening Reception: Valerie Vermeulen's New Work on Paper A young artist from Holderness, Valerie Vermeulen opens her first solo exhibit in the area with exciting new work in mixed media. American photographer Ansel Adams was one of the most productive camera artists of the 20th century. His shimmering black-and-white photographs continue to move audiences well into the current era. He also developed a strong sense of environmental politics that likewise motivated both contemporaries and successors. This illustrated talk will follow Adams and the shaping visions that he brought to his projects. Presenter David Peeler is the author of The Illuminating Mind in American Photography. Exhibiting through March 6, 2016 - Trail Clubs: Connecting People with the Mountains For 140 years trail clubs have been instrumental in the development of the White Mountains as a destination for visitors and residents seeking physical exertion, scenic beauty, spiritual refreshment, and hearty fellowship on mountain trails. The exhibition is organized around three key themes, each representing the contribution of trail clubs to the outdoor recreation landscape: Sense of Place - Trail clubs help people connect not just to the activity of hiking but also to the club's local region and the White Mountain region as a whole. Sense of Purpose - Trail clubs leverage their resources and the resources of their members to create and maintain trails, educate visitors, and advocate for natural spaces. Sense of Belonging - Trail clubs create opportunities for people to be part of a community and socialize with others. The exhibition also includes a full-scale, handcrafted log shelter donated by John Nininger, owner of the Wooden House Co., Ltd., Newbury, Vermont. Following the exhibition the shelter will be dismantled and rebuilt by the Cohos Trail Association along their long-distance trail in Northern New Hampshire, continuing the age-old tradition of trail clubs bringing volunteers together to benefit the hiking community.
