Arts, Culture and Heritage in the North Country

Although the warmth of summer is still with us, we're beginning to get glimpses of fall - a cooler breeze in the air, back-to-school preparations, a hint of the changing leaves to come. As summer draws to a close, we hope you'll find time for some of the wonderful activities and events planned by our member organizations, and add these arts and cultural outings to your list. Check out all the fantastic offerings in this month's e-bulletin!

Bulletin instructions: If this e-bulletin comes through for you as one long text message, click on the Arts Alliance website at www.aannh.org for the user-friendly version. Choose "Join our e-list" in the left-hand column, then enter your email address. You will receive an email from the Arts Alliance. Click to update your Profile. At the bottom of the Profile page, select HTML format. Save your changes. That should solve the problem and allow you to view the bulletin more easily.

The bulletin, for you and your guests, is arranged by sub-regions from north to south and by date. Please be sure to confirm details and hours prior to attending events or visiting sites. Use our "jump to" function (in the column to the left under the In This Issue section), which allows you to go directly to your geographic areas of interest. You can view our complete ArtsNorth calendar for additional details; a link is available in the Quick Links section.

The bulletin lists the events and programs of Arts Alliance member organizations, businesses and artists. If you would like us to list your events, we invite you to join the Arts Alliance now! Membership provides essential support so that we can continue to bring programs as well as services like the e-bulletin and calendar to you, your families, colleagues, customers, neighbors and friends throughout the year. Come and find out which planets are out tonight; the origins of zodiac signs; and how to tell a planet from a star. The program will start indoors, but if the sky is clear the audience will also go out on the front lawn to view the night sky and the Perseid Meteor Showers that are active on this date. Bring a jacket or sweater and perhaps a blanket or lawn chair to sit on. This is a family program for ages 6-106. Our presenter is Matthew Krug, a teacher and storyteller living in the Mount Washington Valley.

Wednesday, August 19, 10am - Tipping the Scales: How to Create a Kick-Ass Application for a Gallery Show, with Katherine Ferrier
When a gallery receives applications from 50 artists, but only has room to present 10 in a given season, simple math tells us that only so many can be chosen. How can you assemble the strongest, most complete portfolio of your work and put your best foot forward? What can you do to make your work stand out and get noticed? In this workshop with Katherine Ferrier, Gallery Coordinator, we'll examine industry best practices for preparing a complete and cohesive application for a gallery show. We'll cover the 5 essential elements of a kick-ass application, and take a look at the top 3 mistakes that will land your application right in the trash. This workshop is relevant to many different kinds of applications, including but not limited to applying for grants, jobs, fellowships and other opportunities. Bring whatever current application materials you may have (photos of artwork, artist statements, exhibition lists, etc.) to get the most out of this fun and fast-paced workshop. www.katherineferrier.net
