Professional Musical Theater Returns to Littleton Opera House with the Holiday Edition of Something Wonderful I Missed:
Not Your Mom's Musical Theater's innovative concerts mix great songs from Broadway and off-Broadway musicals with the often hilarious history behind those songs. Four versatile, talented performers, playing a range of characters to live piano accompaniment, present a concert of holiday selections from musicals -- from classics like "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "We Need A Little Christmas" to lesser-known gems you might have missed from shows as varied as Striking 12 and Promises, Promises. Haitian-American Poet to Visit North Country Schools January 12-18: We're currently signing up schools and community organizations for assemblies and workshops with Mckendy Fils-Aime, a Haitian-American poet and educator from Manchester, NH. Mckendy is an organizer and co-host for his home slam, the long-running and wildly popular Slam Free or Die. A seven-time veteran of the National Poetry Slam and a Pushcart nominee, Mckendy will offer poetry workshops and slams where students can share their own work as well as a collaborative poetry workshop for families, race/identity workshops and professional development for teachers. We are thrilled to welcome Mckendy and encourage you to check in with us on how you, your school and community can participate. Save the Date! This year's BYOP (Bring Your Own Poetry, Performance, Painting, Presentation, Potluck) will be the evening of Tuesday, January 13, at the Karl Drerup Art Gallery in Plymouth. This is our annual meeting and a wonderful time to share your own artwork (and, if you're a visual artist, to see it hang on a gallery wall). Stay tuned for details. If you can't join us in Plymouth, don't worry -- we're planning an additional event further north. Hands-on Workshop Draws on the Past: The Arts Alliance and the Laconia Public Library join forces to present a free workshop for K-12 teachers, historical society members and other historically minded individuals that is a mix of great fun and great learning. "Drawing from the Past: Using Local History Sources to Inspire Learning" is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, from 9am to 3pm at the Laconia Library. Comics artist and educator Marek Bennett and historian Sophia Woodley will lead participants in an interdisciplinary exploration of the relationship between history and sequential art.. Participants will learn ways to engage students in creating original comics from primary historic sources. The workshop is generously funded by the NH Humanities Council. Lunch is included. Integrated Arts Conference January 23: Plymouth State University and the NH Department of Education in cooperation with the Arts Alliance, the NH State Council on the Arts and the NH Arts Learning Network present their annual conference Friday, January 23. This jam-packed one-day event offers great professional development and continuing education workshops for arts educators and artists interested in learning how to integrate visual art, music, drama and writing into their curriculum, based on the theme of this year's production, The Sound of Music. The Connecticut River Artisans Group (CRAG) is a "grass-roots" organization consisting of visual artists and artisans. The mission of the group is to promote the visual arts and provide support to new and established artists in Northern New Hampshire and Vermont as well as Southeastern Quebec. Members are able to participate in exhibits, receive reimbursement for conducting workshops, and be involved with other art-related activities sponsored by CRAG. Local, regional and internationally acclaimed artists fill the stage with a revolving repertoire of shows selected to celebrate the arts, creativity and local cultural heritage. Tickets available in advance (at the center office or online) or at the door the night of the performance.
Season Memberships are currently available for Holiday Gift Giving. Season members enjoy free admission to over twenty exciting and diverse performances. Membership benefits also include advance mailings and personal invitations to special events.
Art exhibits are open for viewing during regular business hours (9am-4pm) Monday-Friday, an hour before all performing arts programs, and by special arrangement. There is no admission fee but donations to support the exhibit series are most welcome and greatly appreciated.
Permanent Exhibition: Scrapbook celebrating the history & story of St. Kieran Center for the Arts

This photographic display highlights over 30 works from Carla's collection. Please join us to view the wonderful display of nature exquisitely captured in these pieces. The local artist will be on hand to discuss her works and share light refreshments with those in attendance. The exhibit is open to the public and donations will be graciously accepted. Most of Carla's exhibit pieces are available for sale and she has generously offered to donate a portion of the proceeds to St. Kieran's to help keep the arts alive in the North Country. Tuesday, December 9, 7pm - SPECIAL EVENT: It's a Wonderful Life Live, from WVL Radio Theatre This 1940s radio style adaptation of Frank Capra's film classic is a guaranteed holiday winner. For those who remember the flashing applause signs and smaltzy organ music from radio stations of old, it's a refreshing step back in time. Younger audiences are enchanted with the glimpse of entertainment the way it was before telephones came equipped with television. The four-member company masterfully conquers multiple characters & sound effect while saving their station from a winter blizzard's doom. A heartwarming, uplifting gift for audiences - with a custom localized radio commercial. Wednesday & Friday, December 10 & 12, 7pm and Sunday, December 14, 2pm - North Country Community Chorus Concerts and Cookie Walk An evening of choral music in celebration of the Holiday Season, designed to appeal to every age in the audience. Having become a musical staple during this festival season, the Chorus will present selections from classic Holiday fare interspersed with some more challenging pieces from a varied repertoire of traditional, folk and contemporary styles. Each evening has something special to offer as pre-performance groups share the stage.

An original operetta based on "The Night of Las Posadas" presented by the Alchemists' Workshop, in which the people of Santa Fe re-enact Mary and Joseph's search for shelter on the night Jesus was born. But on the night of the nativity celebration, a snowstorm hits and the actor's car breaks down on their way into town. Local community members will be participating in the show's chorus.

Thursday, December 4, 10:30am - The Bad Tempered Horse: Puppet Show and Craft In Marion Posner's storytellings, she sweeps her audiences into a world where imaginations flourish and thrive, in stories with characters you cannot help but feel empathy with. The audience often helps create sound effects and children leave inspired to tell their own stories. Myles Grinstead makes magic during the story with puppets. She will bring some simple hand-made puppets, so that children can participate in the story. They can take a puppet or a puppet-making kit home to weave their own magic. De Vito, a former amateur singer, has been studying the stories and music of operas for several decades and approaches the workshops as an opportunity to share some of what he's learned with others who enjoy music and the stage. The format is very informal and the content includes a synopsis of the opera's plot and some biographical background of the composer and the composition. The bulk of the lecture is spent listening to musical selections from the opera. No prior musical knowledge is needed to attend this series. Visitors are welcome to take a self-guided tour of the New Hampshire Maple Experience at The Rocks and visit the Maple Museum, housed in one of many carefully restored historic buildings on the Estate. The museum includes a collection of historic and modern tools used in sugaring. A video played inside the sugar house provides a virtual tour of the springtime sugaring process. The extensive trails system at The Rocks is open daily, year-round, from dawn until dusk. Leashed pets are welcome to accompany their people on the trails. June 25-26, 2015 - Teachers As Writers Workshop The Conference on Poetry and Teaching is a unique opportunity for teachers to work closely with both their peers and with a team of illustrious poets who have particular expertise in working with teachers at all levels: K-12, graduate and undergraduate, and nontraditional and community-based instructors. Over the course of 4½ days, faculty poets share specific, hands-on techniques for teaching poetry. The emphasis is on the reading-conversation-writing-revision cycle, and the teaching approach aligns with the Common Core anchor standards for reading and writing. Graduate-level credits are available. Certificate of completion includes 33 hours of Continuing Education credit. The 1888 building on Strawberry Hill was purchased by the congregation and established as a house of Jewish worship in 1920. Originally used only in summer months, the BHC Synagogue is now in use year round by residents and visitors. The synagogue houses an extensive library and is presently establishing a North Country Jewish Cultural Center to display the growing collection of Jewish artifacts. Regular religious services are scheduled for each weekend, July through mid-October, and for all days of the High Holy Day season. The Museum features memorabilia from the J.E Henry era, early resort hotels, sawmills, Logging photos and equipment, local schools, yearbooks, Tourist attraction, and so much more. The Museum is a former church that was built by J.E. Henry in 1909. There is also a "satellite" museum. The owners of the Village Shops in Lincoln (the old mill site) have given the Museum a store front in the complex and there are numerous photos and early maps on display. The Upper Pemi Historical Society has produced a beautiful cookbook in commemoration of Lincoln and Woodstock's 250th anniversaries, on sale at the museum, Lincoln Public Library and Fadden's General Store. These keepsake items will feed one's stomach and heart with many heritage recipes, some dating back to 1909, as well as current day recipes from local residents. All proceeds from the cookbook will go to the museum building renovation project.

Debra tells stories to audiences of all ages incorporating folktales, fairy tales, Native American stories, original stories, poems and personal adventures, including excerpts from Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. She often uses musical instruments, singing and/or audience participation to enhance the experience. December 11 - Rusty Locke Rusty plays several stringed instruments, including banjo, guitar and auto-harp, using them to weave a spell over his audience as he spins yarns as varied as "Anansi" folk tales from west Africa to his own life experiences. Rusty has a wry sense of humor and a rich baritone voice, which he uses to coax audiences to sing with him - his own songs as well as his version of many popular songs from folk to jazz and everything in between. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his most famous address there, but others spoke too. Because John is interested in the connections between the Civil Rights Movements of the WWII-era and the 1960s, he will use his talk to highlight the ways King's address intersects historical trajectories started by three who "shared the podium" with him that hot summer day: Marian Anderson, A. Philip Randolph, and James Farmer. John aims to allow participants to better appreciate the historical complexities of King, the event, and the directions the Movement took afterwards. The Gallery specializes in original fine art in a variety of mediums (oil, water color, pastels, acrylics, sculptures, etc), along with folk art painted on chests, barrel staves and other objects.
Surroundings offers art classes which will accommodate the first timer as well as those who have some experience in painting. Each class is tailored to the interests of the students, but generally includes a demonstration, discussion, practice time, and individual feedback. The instructor can tailor the discussion and help to any level of expertise. Supplies are available on an a la carte basis. A minimum of 4 people at each class is needed for it to be held. Customer Appreciation Event Normally, the Gallery has an "Oldies but Goodies" sale at the end of the year. In its place, during this Gallery-wide customer appreciation event customers will be able to purchase anything in the Gallery for 20% off between now and December 7 (the last day of operations). Whether the fabric represents religious affiliation, age, class status, ethnic membership, or political association, what one wears is one's identity. Woven or dyed, imported or locally produced, wrapped, tied or tailored-all clothing speaks clearly in the many African languages. Demonstrating ancient traditions or contemporary fads, African peoples use cloth to celebrate the vibrancy of life's rituals from birth to death. Co-curated by Philip Peek, professor emeritus of anthropology at Drew University, and Anthropology of Religion, Ritual and Myth students. The Beehive Collective has traveled to and worked with groups around the world, translating complex global stories into collaboratively drawn images that take on a life of their own. Their most recently printed graphic, "Mesoam erica Resiste," was nine years in the making. This large-format narrative illustration tells stories of grassroots organizing and community resilience from Mexico to Colombia and also celebrates cultural and ecological diversity.
