Kennedy Center/VSA Inclusion Programs:
Get ready for the new school year with an inspiring, practical and hands-on workshop (or two! or three!) from the Arts Alliance and our partners! Throughout August we're continuing our collaboration with VSA New Hampshire by offering a series of professional development programs focused on reaching learners of all abilities through the arts. These acclaimed programs, provided under a contract with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and led by local and national leaders in inclusive arts learning, are free or extremely affordable (with PD credits offered -- and partial scholarships available to all who need them), and they're available in locations across New Hampshire, including Franconia, Plymouth and Gorham. Whether you are an early childhood or arts educator, a teaching artist, a Special Education or classroom teacher, paraprofessional or parent, we have a workshop you won't want to miss.
Workshops include:
- Linking Books & Music for Literacy, August 18 in Franconia
- Simple Puppets as a Learning Medium, August 20, in Derry
- Arts & Inclusive Learning: A Gathering for Teaching Artists, August 21, in Concord
- Inclusive Arts Classrooms for Music, Art & SPED teachers. August 22, in Plymouth
- Making Creative Activities Accessible for All Learners (free program for families, educators & providers), September 3 in Concord, September 4 in Gorham
Gorham ArtWalk & Wine Tasting Tonight: We're pleased to be one of the partners for this year's Gorham ArtWalks, which now include a Wine Tasting Tent. Join local artists -- photographers, painters, knitters, quilters, weavers, doll makers, and many more - on Tuesday, August 12 from 5-8pm on Exchange Street and along Main Street; enjoy local foods and flowers, live music and late-night shopping and dining. Stop by the Wine Tasting Tent for a taste along with food prepared by Libby's Bistro. Sponsors include the Town of Gorham, Androscoggin Valley Chamber of Commerce, WREN and Northern Human Services. Cultivate Dance Festival and Bethlehem Art Walk Return!
Registration is open and tickets are available for the 5th annual Cultivate Festival, August 13-16, designed to nourish and support community by creating a space for contemporary dance to take root, develop and flourish. Cultivate encourages real conversation between artists and their audience. The festival includes four full days of dance workshops for all levels, free dance classes for kids, three evenings of performances, a town-wide art walk, HORIZON (Bethlehem's first Screendance Festival) -- and lots more. A North Country event not to be missed! Learn more and register here.

A poet and Research Associate at the College of the Atlantic, Susie is exploring the role that contemplative practice and creativity play in the protection of the natural world. In her talk she'll introduce us to the thinkers and artists who have inspired her work and share some of her poetry, prose and photography. Learn more about Susie and her work here.
Artist in Residence Programs Begin with Poet Veranda Porche: Our September artist in residence is Vermont poet Verandah Porche, who will be working with students and community members to explore our attitudes and ideas about place -- the land and landscape we call home. In addition to school programs we will be offering readings, community workshops and discussions, and Verandah will train interested community members in recording "told poems." CULTIVATE Dance Festival 2014
Thursday-Sunday, August 13-16 Bethlehem
www.cultivatedancenh.com Watch the dance or JOIN the dance at Cultivate. Three world premieres will be unveiled in the tiny town of Bethlehem, NH this summer, as some of the most well-known contemporary dance makers and innovators create inspiring new works during their residencies at the Cultivate Dance Festival. Five companies will perform and teach at this year's festival, and three of them are making new works during the week leading up to the festival, now in its fifth year. The schedule also includes dance intensives and workshops for all abilities, a town-wide art walk, HORIZON, Bethlehem's first Screendance Festival, a Young Dancers Intensive and much more. Of particular interest is Meet and Make, where Cultivate dancers and musicians, many of whom will have met only a few hours before the show, collaborate improvisationally to create a spontaneous performance right in front of the audience. Audience members get to pick names and numbers from a hat and determine which performers will create and perform a dance, right on the spot. Meet and Make is a free performance, held at the Town Hall Meeting Room in Bethlehem on Thursday, August 14 at 7:30pm. On Friday and Saturday, also at 7:30pm, audiences are treated to two different programs on the Colonial Theatre stage. Bounty and Harvest are evenings of dance works choreographed by this year's Cultivate artists, who hail from around the country and the world. Tickets to these mainstage performances can be purchased on the website or in person at the door. To sign up for intensives and workshops, buy tickets to performances and to learn more about Bethlehem's very own international dance festival, visit the website. Cultivate is presented in partnership with The Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire and with generous support from the the community, including an anonymous donor who has pledged to match dollar for dollar all donations made to Cultivate. Monday, August 18, 7pm - Reading the NH Landscape with a Walk Back in Time: The Secret of Cellar Holes Northern New England is full of reminders of past lives: stone walls, old foundations, a century-old lilac struggling to survive as the forest reclaims a once-sunny dooryard. What forces shaped settlement, and later abandonment, of these places? Adair Mulligan explores the rich story to be discovered in what remains behind. See how one town has set out to create an inventory of its cellar holes, piecing together the clues in the landscape. Such a project can help landowners know what to do if they have archaeological sites on their land and help stimulate interest in a town's future through its past. A NH Humanities Council program, free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Contact: Judy Landry at 726-3081 Saturday, August 23, 9am - Cellar Hole Walk Join Robert Mardin on a cellar hole walk off of Eastern Corners road. One that will be visited is the old cellar hole at the Henry H Southmayd place out east. It was part of the Gardner Spencer farm earlier on, and research is ongoing, with bits and pieces of the cellars uncovered, but looking for information back to earlier times to help tell the story. Meet at Campton Historical Society to carpool or follow to the actual starting place. Robert is packing a lunch and is going to keep going as long as people are willing. The plan is to go two miles up and down a dirt road. People can turn back and head down the road to fit their needs. Cars will be parked in a reasonable area. Beyond that point participants will be walking as larger 4x4 trucks are needed. Rain date is Sunday August 24.

Advice To The Players (ATTP) is a unique company of theater professionals, enthusiastic community members and energetic teens that presents Shakespeare performances and workshops in New Hampshire's Lakes and Mountains Region. ATTP is supported in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts & the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Shakespeare presentations are in August during Sandwich Old Home Week, October during the Sandwich Fair, and in March. Venues include the Sandwich Fairgrounds Stage, The Sandwich Town Hall and The Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth. The December presentation of A Christmas Carol celebrates Victorian Christmas in Tamworth Village. During the school year ATTP offers daytime performances and workshops for schools and student groups and in July offers Shakespeare Camps for students of all ages.
