Free Student Tickets Available for NH Music Festival's Summer Concerts: Through a grant from the Cogswell Benevolent Trust, our partners at the NH Music Festival are providing free tickets to all their concerts this summer for students and youth of all ages pre-K to college. Parents or students are encouraged to call the box office at Silver Center for the Arts (535-2787) and ask to reserve Cogswell Seats for the concert of their choice. For additional details, contact the Music Festival at 279-3300. Of particular interest: the Festival's special family concert Saturday, July 26, at 10am. "The Composer Is Dead" is a wacky and educational murder mystery, specially designed for families to provide an introduction to the orchestra instruments and to pass on the magic of symphony from one generation to the next. ARTS ALLIANCE SUMMER NEWS, EVENTS & PARTNERSHIPS
Wine Tasting Added to Gorham's 2nd Annual ArtWalk:
We're pleased to be one of the partners for this year's two summer ArtWalks, which now include a Wine Tasting Tent. The first takes place Tuesday, July 15, from 5-8pm, rain or shine! Stop by the Wine Tasting Tent for a taste along with food prepared by Libby's Bistro. Tickets are just $15, and are good for 4 Wine Tastings and 4 Food Pairings. Watch local artists demonstrate their skills and purchase works of art and fine crafts. Stop by the farmers market and pick up some fresh local produce, breads, jams, flowers, plants and much more! Eat at local restaurants, browse the stores, which are staying open late for shopping, listen to local musicians --- enjoy everything Gorham has to offer! Sponsors include the Town of Gorham, Androscoggin Valley Chamber of Commerce, WREN and Northern Human Services.
Youth Arts Program:
Our pilot group of young artists will be working with ecoartist and Drerup Gallery director Cynthia Robinson on Tuesday, July 29, to develop a pop-up exhibit and presentation of their summer's work. The exhibit in downtown Lincoln will be part of the town's 250th birthday celebration (the afternoon/evening will also include an ice cream social and outdoor concert!). Check with us for details.
We're also starting to recruit high school students from throughout northern New Hampshire to join our youth arts program as it expands this fall - participants will help shape the program, which will include work with wonderful professional artists in a variety of fields, plus leadership opportunities and the chance to develop arts and organizational job skills. Kennedy Center/VSA Inclusion Programs:
We're offering a series of high-quality, low-cost arts- and Universal Design for Learning-based professional development opportunities for teaching artists, classroom, music, art and SPED educators ,as well as paraprofessionals throughout the region, through our partnership with VSA New Hampshire and our contract with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. August programs include an all-day session on Monday, August 11, at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester. For details, contact us at info@aannh.org.
Cultivate Dance Festival Returns to Bethlehem:
Registration is open and tickets are available for Cultivate, August 13-16, designed to nourish and support community by creating a space for contemporary dance to take root, develop and flourish. Cultivate encourages real conversation between artists and their audience. The festival now includes four full days of dance workshops for all levels, free dance classes for kids, three evenings of performances, a town-wide art walk, HORIZON (Bethlehem's first Screendance Festival) -- and lots more. White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) Artist in Residence: This year's Artist in Residence, Susie O'Keeffe, will be on the Forest mid-August with a free introductory public program Wednesday, August 20 at 7pm at the WMNF Headquarters in Campton. As a Research Associate at the College of the Atlantic, Susie is exploring the role that contemplative practice and creativity play in the protection of the natural world. In this program she will introduce us to the thinkers and artists who have inspired her work, and share some of her poetry, prose and photography. Learn more about Susie and her work here.
The Arts as Inspiration for Learning * Teaching * Making * Living, the 2014 NH Arts Education Partnership Conference, takes place October 31 to November 2, 2014 at the Barbara Harris Conference Center in Greenfield, NH. The conference, presented by the NH State Council on the Arts in collaboration with the Arts Alliance and other partners, will include keynote presentations, hands-on workshops and creation of a community mosaic. Teaching artists, educators and community arts leaders are invited to submit workshop proposals (deadline July 18): you can download the RFP from our website.

The Connecticut River Artisans Group (CRAG) is a "grass-roots" organization consisting of visual artists and artisans. The mission of the group is to promote the visual arts and provide support to new and established artists in Northern New Hampshire and Vermont as well as Southeastern Quebec. Members are able to participate in exhibits, receive reimbursement for conducting workshops, and be involved with other art-related activities sponsored by CRAG. Artists and artisans (photographers, quilters, wood carvers, basket makers, jewelers, etc.) wanting to exhibit should visit the website or call (802) 266-3687. Summer Concert Series
All concerts will be held in the Tillotson Center, at 7pm. Monday, July 21 - Montana Skies Their name is a metaphor for musical freedom, and they continue to follow their creative instincts far beyond traditional boundaries. In concert, these award-winning musicians delve into music from Pink Floyd and Rush to Vivaldi, and "House of the Rising Sun," as well as their own originals, combining elements of classical technique, jazz improv and the power and energy of rock n' roll.

Friday, August 1 - Loren Barrigar and Mark Mazengarb Loren and Mark's music is influenced by bluegrass, jazz and western; their style of guitar playing is largely built upon the thumb-picking techniques pioneered by guitar greats Merle Travis, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed, and their songs feature Loren's superb vocals and some beautiful harmonies. July 17 - Banjos, Bones and Ballads: Traditional songs, rich in local history and a sense of place, present the latest news from the distant past. They help to interpret present-day life with an understanding of the working people who built the country. Wednesday, July 16 - Wednesday Night with a Ranger: Bats and White Nose Syndrome Join Rebecca Peterman from the White Mountain National Forest. Rangers will present a program every Wednesday in July and August. Thursday, July 17 - Frogs: The Thin Green Line Frogs have been on this planet for more than 250 million years, evolving into some of the most wondrous and diverse creatures on earth. Today, they are at the center of one of the greatest mass extinctions since the dinosaurs. Where the calls of frogs once filled the air, scientists now hear only silence. Fridays, July 18 & 25 - Friday Flicks! Join in for an after dinner movie. AMC Staff picks the flick, the audience sits back and enjoys. Saturday, July 19 - Stars Above the Notch: Astronomy at Pinkham Join professional astronomer Dr. Douglas Arion and his students from Carthage College for an evening of stellar observation. Participants will have a chance to view the sky through powerful telescopes for an extraordinary peek at the cosmos. This program is part of AMC's ongoing series of astronomy and solar programs throughout the summer. Sunday, July 20 - North Country Moose Join Alan Stearne as he dispels the "Bullwinkle" myth of the moose and explains the purpose of the moose's morphology-form following function. Stearne will also discuss the moose's life cycle from calves to cows and bulls, as well as behavior, disease, reproduction, and interaction with humans. Monday, July 21 - Maple Sugar: A Contra Dance Band It is a New England dance done in lines. Eric Rollnick is the caller and will teach all the dances. Sandy Hatch will play fiddle and Candace Maher will play accordion, flute, and cello accompaniments. Wear comfortable shoes with soft soles and we encourage skirts that twirl. It is fun for all ages and great exercise for the whole family. Tuesday, July 22 - White Mountain History Trail Blazing & Exploring in the 19th & Early 20th Centuries Join Josh Gillenson, AMC Information Volunteer and long- time visitor to the Whites, for a glimpse of the men and women explorers who came before. Wednesday, July 23 - Wednesday Night with a Ranger: White Mountain Wilderness Celebration, 50 years of Stewardship Join Frank Carus from the White Mountain National Forest. Rangers will present a program every Wednesday in July and August. Thursday, July 24 - MicroCosmos: It's Jurassic Park in Your Own Backyard Microcosmos captures the fun and adventure of a spectacular hidden universe revealed in a breathtaking close up view unlike anything ever seen. With its tiny cast of thousands, MicroCosmos leaves no doubt that Mother Nature remains the greatest special effects wizard of all. Saturday, July 26 - Stories Behind the Stars Join local naturalist Matt Krug for a discussion on the night sky followed by a trip outdoors to view the stars. Matt will show some of the major seasonal constellations, how to locate them, and some of the mythology connected to them. The program is for both beginners and those who are familiar with the night sky, and will focus mostly on what can be seen with the naked eye. Sunday, July 27 - Over the Hedge A scheming raccoon fools a mismatched family of forest creatures into helping him repay a debt of food, by invading the new suburban sprawl that popped up while they were hibernating... and learns a lesson about family himself. Monday, July 28 - Windows to the Wild Join in for a showing of the NH Public Television production with Willem Lange, featuring AMC Huts. This program is part of the 2013 program series, AMC Huts: Celebrating 125 Years of White Mountain Hospitality. Tuesday, July 29 - Two Days Before the Mast: Aboard the Charles W. Morgan, A 21st Century Sail on a 19th Century Whaleship Built in New Bedford, MA in 1841, the Charles W. Morgan is the only surviving wooden whale ship in the world and the oldest wooden merchant ship in America. Following a multi-year restoration effort by Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, the Morgan was fitted out to sail this summer--the first time she has sailed since 1941. Join AMC's Rob Burbank for a photographic presentation on the Morgan's return to New Bedford this past June. Wednesday, July 30 - Wednesday Night with a Ranger: Northern Goshawk Join Chris Costello from the White Mountain National Forest. Rangers will present a program every Wednesday in July and August. Thursday, July 31 - Meet the Coywolf The coywolf, a mixture of western coyote and eastern wolf is a remarkable new hybrid carnivore that is taking over territories once roamed by wolves and slipping unnoticed into cities. Tag along as scientists study this new top predator, tracking it from the wilderness of Ontario's Algonquin Park, through parking lots, alleys and backyards in Toronto all the way to the streets of New York City.

Local, regional and internationally acclaimed artists fill the stage with a revolving repertoire of shows selected to celebrate the arts, creativity and local cultural heritage.
Art exhibits are open for viewing during regular business hours (9am-4pm) Monday-Friday, an hour before all performing arts programs, and by special arrangement. There is no admission fee but donations to support the exhibit series are most welcome and greatly appreciated.

Wednesdays, 7pm - 2014 Met Opera Summer Encores Featuring select performances from the groundbreaking Live in HD series July 23 - The Enchanted Island The four young lovers from A Midsummer Night's Dream find themselves shipwrecked on Prospero's island from The Tempest, leading to a tortuous web of comic and dramatic romantic entanglements. A contemporary take on the 18th-century genre of the pastiche, this delightful Baroque fantasy brings together some of the greatest arias and ensembles by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, Purcell and other composers. July 30 - La Rondine Puccini's achingly beautiful score charmingly conveys the plight of Magda, who unexpectedly finds true love with the handsome young Ruggero. But their idyllic life comes to a premature end as she is haunted by the fear that her checkered past will ruin his future. August 6 - La Fanciulla del West Puccini's musical vision of the American West is vividly brought to life, featuring Minnie, the "girl of the golden west" and owner of a bar in a Californian mining camp. Dick Johnson, the bandit-turned-lover is hunted by the cynical sheriff Jack Rance, who wants Minnie for himself. Complete with whiskey-drinking cowboys, gunplay, a poker game, and a snowstorm, this is Puccini at his most colorful. In Through the Perilous Fight: From the Burning of Washington to the Star-Spangled Banner: The Six Weeks That Saved the Nation, Vogel outlines the pivotal six weeks in 1814 in which a perilous fight preserved the new nation at a time of grave danger, severed remaining ties with America's colonial past, and inspired the country's most indelible song. Steve Vogel is the author of The Pentagon and previously a national reporter for The Washington Post. He has written extensively about military affairs and the treatment of veterans from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Frost Place is a permanent home and museum for poets and poetry at Robert Frost's former homestead, which sits on a quiet North Country lane with a spectacular view of the White Mountains. Enjoy the view from the front porch of Mount Lafayette and the Franconia Notch. Gaze at Robert Frost's autographed books and hand-written letters safely tucked under glass. And, see the Morris Chair in the front room where Frost sat and wrote his poems.

Registration is now open for the annual Jean's Playhouse Broadway Bound summer camp. The theme of this year's camp is Faeries, Knights and Magical Creatures. Classes in voice, dance, improvisation, playwriting, acting, makeup, stage combat, theatre games, arts & crafts, and more. All the courses are designed to be fun and contribute to creating the final performance. Monday, July 28, 7:30pm - A Tour Through Time As part of Lincoln's 250th Anniversary celebration, the Playhouse Players are collaborating to present a play about the history of Lincoln and the people who have built it to the town you see today. The action will begin with the granting of the first land charter through Franconia Notch in 1764 and travel all the way up to the opening of Loon Mountain and the boom of Lincoln's development. July 30-August 16 - Spamalot Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," Spamalot retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. Did we mention the bevy of beautiful show girls? The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony Awards out of the 14 for which it was nominated.

Featuring the works from local collector Berlin Larsen with pieces from the collection of the late beloved Waterville Valley resident architect, Donald Jazinski. The Museum features memorabilia from the J.E Henry era, early resort hotels, sawmills, Logging photos and equipment, local schools, yearbooks, Tourist attraction, and so much more. The Museum is a former church that was built by J.E. Henry in 1909. There is also a "satellite" museum. The owners of the Village Shops in Lincoln (the old mill site) have given the Museum a store front in the complex and there are numerous photos and early maps on display. The Upper Pemi Historical Society has produced a beautiful cookbook in commemoration of Lincoln and Woodstock's 250th anniversaries, on sale at the museum, Lincoln Public Library and Fadden's General Store. These keepsake items will feed one's stomach and heart with many heritage recipes, some dating back to 1909, as well as current day recipes from local residents. All proceeds from the cookbook will go to the museum building renovation project.

Thursdays, June 26-August 14, 2pm - Jean's Playhouse Children's Theatre Touring Company Fun family entertainment geared towards adults and children ages 3 and up - kids will love the catchy original songs and wacky characters. Shows are approximately 30-40 minutes long with the opportunity to meet the entire cast in the lobby afterward. Mueller's experiments with Yupo have led her to work in a "manner that is always flexible and uncertain." The results are luscious landscapes in graphite, charcoal and India ink. Monday, July 21, 7pm - The Case of the Detective Who Refused to Die: Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes In one of the most famous reincarnations of all time, Arthur Conan Doyle killed off his world-renowned detective Sherlock Holmes, only to bring him back to life several years later. What caused Doyle's disenchantment with his creation and what led to his resurrection? Ingrid Graff discusses Doyle's life and writings and above all his relationship with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. She looks at several of the Sherlock Holmes stories to investigate the intense attraction of the prose, the plots, the places, and especially the undying fascination of the public with the man who became the world's most famous detective.
