Early Summer - Issue 147

|
We're finalizing our schedule for the 2014-2015 school year, with plans to send artists all around the region (and beyond) for workshops and performances celebrating and teaching about theater, poetry, Taiko drumming, contemporary classical music, dance, Middle Eastern drumming, and much more. Is your school or community looking for artists or humanists next year? Contact us at programs@aannh.org and we'll be glad to work with you to design programs that meet your school and classroom goals.
Teachers: We're offering a series of high-quality, low-cost arts-based professional development opportunities for classroom, music, art and SPED educators throughout the North Country, the state and the region this summer through our contract with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and partnership with VSA New Hampshire. Contact us at programs@aannh.org for details or if you'd like to host a program.
Free Student Tickets Available for Summer Concerts: Through a grant from the Cogswell Benevolent Trust, our partners at the NH Music Festival are providing free tickets to their concerts this summer for students and youth of all ages pre-K to college. The number of free tickets is limited, so parents or students are encouraged to call the box office at Silver Center for the Arts (535-2787) and ask to reserve Cogswell Seats for the concert of their choice. For additional details, contact the Music Festival at 279-3300.
Core Arts Standards Launched: Check out the new national core arts standards on a website launched by the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS). The new standards for dance, media arts, music, theater and visual arts were created by 70 writers representing NCCAS's arts education member organizations. More than 6,000 educators, teaching artists, parents, students and state and local focus groups offered input in four national reviews that helped shape the final standards. The PreK-12 grade-by-grade standards are intended to guide educators seeking to provide quality arts education for America's students, define artistic literacy, and support 21st century and college and career readiness. The arts standards are housed at www.nationalartsstandards.org. A key feature of the interactive website is the option for teachers and other users to create customized standards handbooks that match their curriculum and students' learning needs.
