It's Earth Day! After a long, cold winter, we're more than ready for warmer weather and an explosion of green grass, leafed-out trees, and blossoms in the garden. Just like Mother Nature, arts and cultural organizations around the region are also gearing up for the new season with enticing events that we know you're going to want to take part in. This e-bulletin will help you find your Spring groove, with dozens of offerings from our member organizations. Happy Spring, everyone!

White Mountain National Forest Artist in Residence Application Deadline is April 25: Applications are being accepted until Friday, April 25, from artists from around the country -- for the 2014 White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) Artist in Residence program. You don't need to be a visual artist to apply -- we welcome applications from performing artists, writers, poets, choreographers, craftspeople, intermedia artists, etc... In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, this year's residency will focus on the designated wilderness areas of the WMNF. The Margret and H.A. Rey Center in Waterville Valley, an Arts Alliance member, is offering a new Curious George Cottage artist residency during September. Read more here.

UPCOMING ALLIANCE & PARTNER PROGRAMS  

Mime dancer Presents "Tanzpiel": Karen Montanaro, an extraordinary mime dancer whose work focuses on creativity and communication without words is our regional Artist in Residence May 1 & 2 and May 27-30. Join us for "Tanzpiel," a great evening of mime dance on Friday, May 2, at 7:30pm at the Littleton Opera House. This performance for all ages includes selections from Karen's amazing original repertoire including Hunter & Tiger, Silent Movie Heroine, The Babysitter, the Ol' Gunslinger, Baseball, Big City Rhythms, A Wonderful Word and more! You can purchase tickets here. Children in 3rd to 7th grade are invited to join Karen onstage for a special mini-performance; email us at programs@aannh.org to preregister, and come to the Opera House at 6pm on the day of the show for a rehearsal. Karen will be returning May 27-30 for school programs, a series of workshops and a performance at the Medallion Opera House in Gorham.

 

We'll be hosting an informal dinner with Karen on Thursday evening in Franconia -- she'll share some stories and talk about her work on the role of artists in contemporary society; everyone welcome -- call or email us for details.

  

Something Wonderful I Missed - A Broadway Tour: On May 10 and 11, we invite music and theater lovers to join us for a special Mother's Day Weekend from Not Your Mom's Musical Theater. Not Your Mom's innovative concerts mix great songs from Broadway and off-Broadway musicals with the often hilarious history behind those songs. Four versatile, talented performers, playing a range of characters to live piano accompaniment, bring you your about-to-be favorite songs from shows you might have missed. The audience gets a glimpse of musical theater at its finest and simplest - actors onstage, telling a story through music. Recommended for ages 12 & up. Tickets are $15, $12 for Arts Alliance members and students. A Free Workshop for Teaching Artists -- Dig into New England's Creative Ground: We're working with the New England Consortium of Artist-Educator Professionals, the NH State Council on the Arts and the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) to co-host a free workshop for teaching artists on May 20, 10am to noon at the PSU Graduate Center, 5th floor, 2 Pillsbury Street in Concord. NEFA  staff will provide an overview of grants and programs for teaching artists, including NEFA's newest tool, CreativeGround, a regional directory spotlighting cultural nonprofits, creative businesses, and professional artists and connecting them with each other and everyone invested in the Creative Economy. We've been sending artists to schools and community sites
(preschools, nursing homes, etc.) all around the region (and beyond) -- for workshops and performances celebrating and teaching about everything from world drum rhythms to American folk traditions to Afghan culture. Do you have something specific in mind you'd like to bring to your site -- or want to know what wonderful programs are planned near you so that you can piggyback (and save money and time)? Teachers: We'll be offering a whole new series of high-quality, low-cost arts-based professional development opportunities for classroom, music, art and SPED educators this spring through our contract with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and partnership with VSA New Hampshire. Contact us at programs@aannh.org for details or if you'd like to host a program.

Monday, April 28, 7pm - An Evening of Music from Prince Edward Island
Arriving like a breath of spring air from Canada's Maritimes will be a special night of music from Prince Edward Island featuring four of that corner of the globe's top performers. Dynamic fiddlers Richard Wood and Cynthia MacLeod, along with PEI troubadours Gordon Belsher and Caroline Bernard, will light up the stage at the Tillotson Center.  The four will perform traditional music of Prince Edward Island, including some original tunes and old favorites in a fun and fast-moving evening of music, storytelling and dance. This special tour spotlights the music of their native land and promotes The Festival of Small Halls.
Upcoming performances booked by the GNWCA at the Tillotson Center include the return of Camerata New England with a program of Schubert on Saturday, May 10; Ashelin featuring the Palmer sisters on Monday, June 9; the Gothard Sisters on Monday, July 7; and the Celtic Funk group Coig on Tuesday, July 15.

The Connecticut River Artisans Group (CRAG) is a "grass-roots" organization consisting of artists from Pittsburg, NH, Colebrook, NH, West Stewartstown, NH, Canaan, VT and Coaticook, PQ. The mission of the group is to promote the visual arts and provide support to new and established artists in Northern New Hampshire and Vermont as well as Southeastern Quebec. Members are able to participate in exhibits, receive reimbursement for conducting workshops, and be involved with other art-related activities sponsored by CRAG. Artists and artisans (photographers, quilters, wood carvers, basket makers, jewelers, etc.) wanting to exhibit should visit the website or call (802) 266-3687. Momventures Classes
These grown-up craft classes give you a chance to have a night out. Grab some friends and come make some spring and summer wreaths... we provide the instruction and everything you need to make your masterpiece. There are munchies to enjoy and it is a fun time for all. Classes are held evenings based on your schedule. Come enjoy some of our favorite children's stories with this month's author Eric Carle.  Fun read-alouds, with activities to follow and a chance to check out the Discovery Center. Class for children ages 3+. Kids Lit is a free monthly workshop, designed around some of our favorite children's authors, where kids listen to and act out stories, create projects and meet some of our puppets who love to help us tell the stories. Saturday, April 26, 1-3pm - Kids Explore
Honor Earth Day with our paper making class, where we will make our own recycled paper as well as create other fun eco science projects. Class for children 6+. Kids Explore is a free monthly workshop, planned around a nature or world related themes, designed to get kids excited about learning and the world around them. Due to limited space and parking, advance registration is required by calling or going to the website.

Wednesdays, 4-5pm - Kidstage 1 (for children ages 5-8) & Thursdays, 4-5:30pm - Kidstage 2 (for children ages 8-12)
Kidstage classes are a chance to let little actors take the stage. Exploring singing, music and movement, dramatics games, making costumes and sets, and putting on a show are all a part of this 8-week session.

We will also be starting a Kidstage class for children ages 7-12 the first week of May. This is a great chance to let your child take the stage as we learn to perform songs, put on a play, and do fun games and activities. This will be a 6-week class.
Fridays, 10-10:45am - KinderKids
Weekly, 8-week sessions. Learn songs, listen to stories, do crafts, move to music, and explore rhymes and rhythm instruments. Discovery Center time is included after class until 11:30am. For children 2-4 with their caregiver; an additional class for 9 month-2 years, and also a third class for children ages 5-7,  will be created if there is interest.

Collection is housed in an 1868 church on the edge of the Waumbek Golf Course. Permanent exhibits include early life in Jefferson, the life of Thaddeus Lowe, the Cherry Mountain Slide, and the Waumbek Hotel photographs and memorabilia.

April 26 - Dr. Quackenbush Skis the Headwall 
This famous ski comedy, filmed in 1940, follows Dr. Quackenbush to Cranmore, Wildcat and Tuckerman Ravine. Filmed by Sidney Shurcliff in New Hampshire's White Mountains, this famous comedy classic follows the misadventures of Dr. Erasmus B. Quackenbush from Mt. Cranmore to the Wildcat Race Trail to the heights of Tuckerman Ravine's legendary Headwall. Historic footage, spectacular skiing, "hill"arious comedy and a vintage musical score make this film great entertainment for the entire family.

A story will be read aloud each week, small activities connected with the story will be included throughout, and an after-school snack will be provided. The program will end at 4pm and children must be picked up or met at the Library at that time.

Music in the Great North Woods promotes and supports classical music in New Hampshire's North Country in new, as well as existing, venues. During the summer months, the non-profit organization sponsors a Master Organ Recital series and the Big Moose Bach Fest, with visiting musicians of international stature. Wednesday, April 23 - World Book Night
World Book Night (WBN) is an ambitious campaign to give thousands of free, specially printed paperbacks to light or non-readers. Volunteer book givers help promote reading by going into communities and handing out free copies to those without means or access to printed books. With the organizational support of local bookstores and libraries, volunteers share the free books in locations such as hospitals, nursing homes, food pantries, underfunded schools and more. This is not a random giveaway, but a person-to-person, carefully planned outreach. www.worldbooknight.org
Saturday, April 26, 2pm - Local Veterans' Contributions to History Celebrated
The valiant men from the Granite State who fought in World War II will never be forgotten. As WWII drew to an end, 38 New Hampshire servicemen remained in Europe, resting permanently at the sprawling 57-acre American military cemetery called Henri-Chapelle in Belgium. Author Aimee Fogg guarantees that their story will be remembered due to her touching and important book, The Granite Men of Henri-Chapelle. Fogg, along with Pvt. Everett Wiggin's daughter, Roberta Wiggins Webster of North Conway, will answer questions in an Author Meet & Greet.

Theater in the Wood
The Battle of the Bands for Books returns to the Theater in the Wood on Saturday, May 24 at 6pm. The event will feature bands that have been chosen from audition tapes and videos. They will perform and compete at the Theater in the Wood in front of a panel of local judges with a cash prize. To submit a band for consideration, visit www.bandsforbook.org, download an entry form and submit two audio files and a video link of the band performing. Bands will be chosen for the event from these submissions. There is no cost to enter. Entries are due by May 2. The event is a fundraiser to benefit the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation and its goal of purchasing a new Storybook Bus for its outreach programs.

Create a luminous lightweight scarf and learn about the fastest-growing technique in felt-making in this workshop, designed to give you a working knowledge of the nuno technique: a method of felting wool fibers into a fabric base, often silk. Nuno felt has become the darling of couture for it's lightweight, drapeable and highly textured fabric, perfect for a summer scarf or shawl as very little wool actually touches your skin. Owned by The Society for Protection of NH Forests, The Rocks is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Picnic areas, hiking, skiing and snowshoe trails. Bretzfelder Park, Prospect Street in Bethlehem, is managed in cooperation with the town of Bethlehem. Facilities include a classroom, educational trails, pond and several picnic sites.
Visitors are welcome to take a self-guided tour of the New Hampshire Maple Experience at The Rocks and visit the Maple Museum, housed in one of many carefully restored historic buildings on the Estate. The museum includes a collection of historic and modern tools used in sugaring. A video played inside the sugar house provides a virtual tour of the springtime sugaring process.
The extensive trails system at The Rocks is open daily, year-round, from dawn until dusk. Leashed pets are welcome to accompany their people on the trails. For visitors using their smart phones, The Rocks also offers a Mobile Tour, where visitors may learn more about the history of the Estate, modern day conservation and management practices there, and the different types of Christmas trees grown on the farm.

Join the local chapter of the Audubon Society and the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests staff member and wildlife enthusiast Nigel Manley as he leads program participants through the discovery of the wild turkey, how it got its name and how it became domesticated. Manley will invite participants to touch turkey feathers and spurs, and to hear the noises that turkeys make while feeding, fighting and relaxing. Participants are invited to bring their favorite call and demonstrate it to the audience or to learn how to use a turkey call. This program is for everyone who is interested in these magnificent birds, be it for watching or hunting.

Sunday, April 27, 4pm - Holocaust Remembrance Day Service

You are invited to join members of the community on Holocaust Memorial Day (Yom HaShoah) for a community-wide service to honor man's triumph over darkness. Pianist Marjan Kiepura will open the service with the Chopin Prelude Op. 28, No.15 in D-Flat, the "Raindrop Prelude." The service, accompanied by live music performed by Shana Aisenberg (violin, mandolin) and Beverly Woods (piano), is interactive with song, poetry and inspiration. The service will be followed by a light dairy-vegetarian potluck. Please join us and bring your own stories to share at our community gathering of remembrance, hope and light. The Society's new museum in the Parker Block houses a collection of 18th, 19th and 20th century artifacts, papers, books, photographs, genealogies and other items relevant to Lisbon, Lyman and Landaff history. The Society's mission is to continue collecting artifacts, photographs, papers, genealogies and other items relevant to the area's rich history, in addition to aiding researchers and teaching the students in schools.
Major fundraisers have been publication of Personal Traces, a Historical Collection of Personal Accounts from Lisbon, Lyman and Landaff, NH, Book One and Two by Andrea M. Fitzgerald and reproduction of the George Norris 1883 Birds-eye Map of Lisbon. All profits from the books and maps benefit the Lisbon Area Historical Society, a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity. A grant was also awarded from NH Electric Co-op Foundation to conserve Lisbon's original 1790 manuscript map of Lisbon.

Exhibiting through September 20 - Private Collection
Featuring the works from local collector Berlin Larsen, with pieces from the collection of the late beloved Waterville Valley resident architect, Donald Jazinski. Each piece carries with it a unique history. This exhibit is filled with original artwork and limited edition prints by Cape Cod artists of the '50s and '60s. Included in the show are still photos of many of the artists, including Jasinski, taken during the filming of The Banquet. No charge, donations are welcome. Proceeds support the Rey Center's art and science education programs.

Offering professional and emerging artists in all media an opportunity to pursue and share their art and artistic process while surrounded by the inspiring landscape of the mountain village of Waterville Valley, NH. The Residency provides the community with direct, hands-on experiences with working artists and an opportunity for the artist to work in an educational and community setting. The Rey Center is currently accepting applications from artist in all media - visual and performing arts, craftspeople, authors, poets, composers, eco artists - through June 1 for a two-week residency during September. The Museum reflects the everyday life of past years with lots of photos, displays of logging, Civilian Conservation Corps, hotels and inns, and personal memorabilia of folks who lived in this river valley mainly from the 1890s to the present. The Museum is a former church that was built by J.E. Henry in 1909.
The Museum also now has a "satellite" museum. The owners of the Village Shops in Lincoln (the old mill site) have given the Museum a store front in the complex, which has numerous photos and early maps on display.

Exhibiting through May 15 - Bachelor of Fine Arts Studio Art and Graphic Design Exhibition
The BFA degrees in studio art and graphic design are intense, highly focused professional programs. Throughout the year, studio art majors delve into personal themes, motifs, and media to achieve a mature body of work, culminating in the selection of work featured in this threshold exhibit at the Karl Drerup Art Gallery. Graphic design majors create and define a fictitious company and spend the year producing a broad range of applications including logos, stationery, advertisements, posters, pamphlets, and publications. These materials are displayed in the Silver Center for the Arts atrium. BFA students in both programs are mentored by selected faculty members, although all faculty participate in critiques and individual dialog with the students throughout the experience. Exhibiting Studio Art in the Karl Drerup Art Gallery and Graphic Design in the Silver Center for the Arts.

Advice To The Players (ATTP) is a unique company of theater professionals, enthusiastic community members and energetic teens that presents Shakespeare performances and workshops in New Hampshire's Lakes and Mountains Region.  ATTP is supported in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts & the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Shakespeare presentations are in August during Sandwich Old Home Week, October during the Sandwich Fair, and in March. Venues include the Sandwich Fairgrounds Stage, The Sandwich Town Hall and The Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth. The December presentation of A Christmas Carol celebrates Victorian Christmas in Tamworth Village. During the school year ATTP offers daytime performances and workshops for schools and student groups and in July we offer Shakespeare Camps for students of all ages.

The building (1 mile north of Blair Bridge Road, Exit 27 off I-93) is handicap accessible and the programs are free and open to the public. Program meetings are usually held on the third Monday of each month except February, March and December.

The Gallery specializes in original fine art in a variety of mediums (oil, water color, pastels, acrylics, sculptures, etc.), as well as folk art painted on chests, barrel staves and other objects. Surroundings offers art classes which accommodate the first timer as well as those who have some experience in painting. Each class is tailored to the interests of the students, but generally includes a demonstration, discussion, practice time, and individual feedback.
