The mission of the group is to promote the visual arts and provide support to new and established artists in Northern New Hampshire and Vermont as well as Southeastern Quebec. Visitors are welcome to take a self-guided tour of the New Hampshire Maple Experience at The Rocks and visit the Maple Museum, housed in one of many carefully restored historic buildings on the Estate. The museum includes a collection of historic and modern tools used in sugaring. A video played inside the sugar house provides a virtual tour of the springtime sugaring process. The extensive trails system at The Rocks is open daily, year-round, from dawn until dusk. Leashed pets are welcome to accompany their people on the trails. For visitors using their smart phones, The Rocks also offers a Mobile Tour, where visitors may learn more about the history of the Estate, modern day conservation and management practices there, and the different types of Christmas trees grown on the farm. Thursday, November 8, 7pm - Eagle Pond Authors' Series: Forrest Gander Known for the richness of his language and his undaunted lyric passion, Gander is the author of more than a dozen books, including collaborations with notable artists and photographers. His 2011 poetry collection Core Samples from the World (New Directions) was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Donald Hall will be on hand to introduce Gander, and both will stay after the reading for an authors' reception and book signing, including Hall's latest publication Christmas at Eagle Pond. Exhibiting through December 14 at Drerup Art Gallery - History and Techniques of Printmaking On display for the first time at PSU are works by Durer, Hiroshige, Goya, Kollwitz, Piranesi, Christo and Miro, among others in this wonderful teaching collection. The exhibit is a historical overview of the varieties of methods, techniques, and styles produced by artists from 1500 to the present. Technical examples of work include woodcuts, lithographs, etchings, engravings and serigraphs. The collection, owned by painter and teacher George Burk, is curated by George's son, art historian Efram Burk. Exhibiting November 13-December 14 - Joseph Blajda: Stuffed Toy Series Joe Blajda '75 is an accomplished painter, musician and teacher, and an avid surfer. In his oil paintings he examines the moods and color of his environments, whether internal or external, neighborhood visions or ocean tranquility. With this series, Joe investigates the colors, textures and psychological nuances of the moods present in this subject, stuffed toys. Layers of myth-making are responsible for a New England (both real and imagined) that has its roots in romantic idealism and hard-nosed pragmatism. How to sort through it? One way is to investigate the work of the myth-makers: Robert Frost, Wallace Nutting, Norman Rockwell, and Yankee Magazine. They comprise the people and institutions as responsible for the tourists as the legends. A NH Humanities Council program, presented by Edie Clark, free and open to the public. Program meetings are usually held on the third Monday of each month except February, March and December.
