Annual Absalom Jones celebration  cancelled

After careful reflection as well as several critical mitigating circumstances, the leadership of the Bishop Herbert Thompson Jr. Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians has decided to cancel the annual Absalom Jones celebration for 2013. We regret having to make this decision and invite each congregation or community of faith in the diocese to remember the legacy of the Rev. Absalom Jones on February 10 as part of your worship experience. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to your fullest support in the future.

Online parochial report filing underway

Online filing of 2012 parochial reports began January 2. Hard copies of the report and log-in information with the UEID and PIN numbers were mailed the second week of December, so all churches should have their packets. Please note that the workbooks for help in filling out the report are available online.

Diocesan Cycle of Prayer

The duty of all Christians is to follow Christ; to come together week by week for corporate worship; and to work, pray, and give for the spread of the kingdom of God.

Our Diocesan Cycle of Prayer is listed both in a perpetual calendar and a Word document on the diocesan website and is updated frequently.

Engaging faith communities to protect children from gun violence

The Children's Defense Fund is partnering with a wide spectrum of faith communities to protect children from gun violence. During the weekend of January 18 - 20, we encourage you to focus on ending gun violence and keeping children safe in your prayers, service, education programs, and advocacy activities.
Will you please join us?

Together-with prayer, education, and action-we can help ensure every child a safe start through common sense gun safety laws, strengthened mental health resources, and a commitment to counter the culture of violence. For some, this will build on participation in prior events responding to the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy. For other places of worship, this may be an initial effort to connect faith to action on ending violence against children. With the upcoming Presidential Inauguration, the weekend of January 18 - 20 represents a vital opportunity to lift up the leadership and direction we expect from all our elected officials to join with people of faith and citizens across our nation to work for the peace, safety, and well-being of our children.

Please visit our website for Faith Community Resources that will help you plan any number of activities that are appropriate for you and those you lead, including:
*    A menu of suggested activities from which to select or to serve as inspiration for your own ideas
*    Educational materials to share with your members and incorporate into teachings
*    A reproducible bulletin insert for your service
*    Prayers that may be used in many worship contexts
*    Sermon notes based on the designated texts for the weekend in the Revised Common, Roman Catholic, and Episcopal lectionaries. The Torah portion for January 19th, Bo, also lends itself to sermons on the topic.
*    Outreach materials, including a sample Op-Ed and Letter to the Editor.
