The Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati is joined by the Diocese of Southern Ohio, Archdiocese of Cincinnati, SC Ministry Foundation, University of Cincinnati and Xavier University as sponsors of Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in Ancient Times, an exhibit opening Nov. 16 at the Cincinnati Museum Center.

Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in Ancient Times features the most comprehensive collection of ancient artifacts from Israel ever organized, including one of the largest collections of the priceless 2,000-year-old Dead Sea Scrolls. The exhibition was created by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) from the collections of the Israel National Treasures and produced by Discovery Times Square and The Franklin Institute.

Building a Circle of Protection : Poverty, Hunger and Public Policy

An Evening with the Rev. David Beckman and Bread for the World

Join the Rev. David Beckman, president of Bread for the World, as well as Jewish and Muslim faith leaders for an evening of discussion and dialogue about the realities of hunger in our world tonight, Oct. 22, from  7 to 8:30 p.m.  at the Duff Banquet Center in the Cintas Center at Xavier University. The event is free and open to the public.

Ponder the question: What can and should the faith community do to be powerful advocates to end hunger and poverty, both in our own communities and abroad?  Bread for the World is a non-partisan Christian advocacy non-profit dedicated to overcoming hunger. It has mobilized people of faith to convince Congress to strengthen funding for domestic food and nutrition programs, tax credits to help keep working low-income families above the poverty level, and foreign aid.

Lutheran pastor and economist David Beckman won the World Food Prize in 2010, helped launch the ONE campaign, and  founded the Alliance to End Hunger. Educated at Yale and the London School of Economics, he worked at the World Bank for 15 years, leading innovation to make the Bank more effective in fighting poverty.
Organ recital Martin Kasparak

St. Peter's, Delaware, will welcome back organist Martin Kasparek on Tuesday, Oct. 23 for a half hour recital on St. Peter's beautiful Tellers Organ at 12 noon.

Kasparek, from St. Imier, Switzerland, was the featured organist for an Evensong held at St. Peter's last October. This recital is his way of saying thank you to the members of the parish and the Delaware community who made him feel so welcomed during his 2011 visit.

The program is free of charge and open to the public.  Plan to come and bring a friend with whom to share this musical event.  A reception to meet the artist will follow the musical offering.

Energy Stewardship

Did you know that there are more than 370,000 houses of worship in the United States? If they would cut energy use by 20% collectively they

would save nearly $630 million per year;
would cut electricity use by more than 3.6 billion kilowatt hours; and
would prevent more than 2.6 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

That's why Ohio Interfaith Power and Light is launching its ENERGY STEWARDS and ENERGY AUDITS programs--we want to help Ohio's worship facilities save energy and cut their greenhouse gas emissions.
With ENERGY STEWARDS, congregations can use an on-line tool to track energy use in their facility and to take steps towards better earth stewardship. We will also help congregations find and use rebates or loans for ENERGY AUDITS to identify areas to conserve and become more efficient.

Won't you join in our effort to reduce energy use by 20% among Ohio's houses of worship? Check out our webpage or join us for a Free Webinar providing an overview of ENERGY STEWARDS on Wednesday, October 24 at 10 a.m. or Tuesday, November 13 at 7 p.m.

If you have questions or would like more information, contact Craig Foster, OhIPL Technical Consultant at (614) 940-6274 or email at cfoster@fosterenergymanagement.com.

Join the Flunking Sainthood Guild

Why a Flunking Sainthood Guild?  Using Jana Riess' book, Flunking Sainthood: A Year of Breaking the Sabbath, Forgetting to Pray, and Still Loving My Neighbor, we'll have a great opportunity to sample spiritual practices to see what works, with support and encouragement from peers. It's always nice to find out you're not the only one who can't be silent for ten or twenty minutes. It's also great to hear how others have approached and succeeded at a particular practice.

Our first meeting will be Saturday, October 27, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Beans and Grapes, a coffee house, located at 6200 Montgomery Rd. in Pleasant Ridge. We'll decide format then. This group is open to all women interested in exploring their spirituality in community.  So bring your friends and join us for fun, laughter, joy, great coffee - and God!

Seamen's Church Institute's Christmas on the River gift item collection

Last year, SCI provided holiday gifts to some 16,000 professional mariners aboard more than a thousand commercial towing vessels up and down the river system through its storied "Christmas on the River" outreach.

All year long, around four thousand knitters across twelve time zones have been hard at work creating beautiful hats and scarves to present to mariners working at Christmas. Each member of the crew receives a handknit gift, arriving in a cheerful package with handwritten cards, a greeting from the chaplain and other small Christmas gifts. For those items accompanying the knitted goods, SCI must rely on donations from supportive churches, individuals and/or businesses.

Take a look at the list below. Most of these are found at local supermarkets or in a stash of a company's logo-branded items. While they may seem small, such thoughtfully selected gifts make a big difference in the lives of those who receive them. If your family, organization or company can help, please e-mail cas@seamenschurch.org

Warm the hearts of river mariners far from home at Christmas with gifts of:
* Handmade Christmas Cards
* Unscented, Colorless Lip Balm
* Unscented, Hypoallergenic Hand Lotion (2-4oz bottles)
* Sealed Packages of Holiday Sweets
* Books or Activities like Sudoku, word searches, or playing cards
* Facial Tissue (personal size)
* Microwave Popcorn
* Chewing Gum
* DVD's of recent, first-run movies (new or used)

All items must be in new and unused condition and in their original packaging. We cannot accept items that are used or unsealed.

Christ Church Cathedral's annual COR pack-out is set for Saturday, December 8, from 8:30 a.m. until about noon. Volunteers are very welcome - please contact Megan Emery, CCC's COR coordinator e-mail: meganemery@hotmail.com
