Dear Friends:

This month Leonard Cohen turns 80. My passions for Cohen's work began in the 1908s while living in Montreal. I have always been inspired by his words and poetry. The July issue of Brain Pickings was dedicated to him and named him one of the most exhilarating creative spirits of the past century.

Here's what he says about creativity and where good songs come from: "If I knew where the good songs came from I would go there more often. It's a mysterious condition. It's much like the life of a Catholic nun. You're married to a mystery." 

I look forward to honoring his birthday on September 14th (see below).

 

Last month I had the chance to see HAIR: The Musical at The Hollywood Bowl. What an experience, especially since the first time I saw it was in 1967 on Broadway. What I realized most about changing times, is the sense of consciousness and interconnectedness of the 1960s which seems to be missing in so many realms of our lives today. Back then, of course, the anti-war movement united us in a common cause. Today, it seems we are so much more fragmented with so many causes and issues to worry about.

READING SUGGESTION

I recently finished reading a great poetry collection, called 

SuperLoop by Nicole Callihan. Far from being a novice poet, this was Callihan's first poetry collection. I found her poems to be charming and alluring. Callihan has the uncanny ability to draw the reader in with her seductive and eloquent voice. The poems are sparse, but rich in thought and universal sentiments. Highly recommended!
