"Culture develops with or without you, imagine what happens

when you lead it with intention."

Culture Does Great Things

This past May, the University of Alberta Alumni celebrated their 100th anniversary. To commemorate, the Alumni held a Leadership Summit entitled Do Great Things. I was privileged to be invited as a guest, grateful for the experience and all the learning and new ideas we shared over the weekend. It was impactful and reminded me how proud I am to be an Alumni. In this article, I share two key learnings from two incredible leaders. Both messages are critical to help guide culture, that is, if you're truly committed to design your culture with intention.
Rick Hansen

I arrived at the Winspear Centre on Friday, May 22 to hear Rick Hansen speak about how to Be a Difference Maker. I admit that I had high expectations as he is, after all, a true Canadian Hero. He talked for 60 minutes and I am sure I was an emotional wreck for 58 of those 60 minutes. His stories of adversity, courage and never giving up, provided me with an ongoing source of inspiration and respect. This incredible human being played a critical role in leading the fight for inclusion across the globe. He spoke about "actively removing barriers and improving the lives of people with disabilities." What kept him going? Hope. Rick Hansen shared that where there is life, there is hope. As he stated this it was like a lightning bolt went directly through my heart. His words rang so true because hope allows us to make possible what seems impossible. For example, who thought The Man in Motion World Tour would really work? Yet for 26 months he wheeled over 40,000 km, in a wheelchair, through 34 countries raising awareness for people with disabilities.

In any circumstance we all have to have hope in order to move forward. Culture is no different. Leaders in any organization who provide hope, clear visions and shared dreams are the very organizations that thrive, even in uncertain times. Without hope, there is no path forward. Thank you Rick Hansen.

Drew Dudley

Drew Dudley is Founder and Chief Catalyst of Nuance Leadership Inc. He is also known for his Ted Talk Lollipop Moments which was voted one of the top 15 inspirational Ted talks of all times. You have got to take a peek at this inspiring message and the meaning around creating leadership moments.

Drew graced the stage on Saturday, May 23 during the lunch at the University of Alberta and immediately stole my heart when he said,"Culture is the most powerful force on the face of this earth." Yes, Yes, Yes- I completely agree!

Drew went on to share another powerful message. We need to define the things that define us. Simply put, why do we matter? If we don't answer this question we will never be complete. He went on to teach that it's not just the clarity in definition that makes the impact, but it is how we create opportunities to live the definition which creates the biggest impact. This allows "people to drive desired behaviour, not evaluate it." The best way to do this is to design questions that move you to action resulting in impact.

The same is true when you apply this to culture. Designing and living the culture you want is not just about definition, it is about creating opportunity to live the culture intended. If Drew asked me to create a question that drove culture impact it might look something like this:

As a leader of our company, what have I
done today to help employees thrive?

or
How did I add value to the lives of our employees today?

Indeed it was a powerful message, thanks Drew Dudley.

It was an influential weekend of learning and I thank the University of Alberta Alumni and Venture Mentoring Services for the invitation to this incredible event.
