A rebound after an ugly March was needed, and much of April delivered. Markets pushed upward, with the S&P1 500 briefly touching 3% for the year. However, it has been said that markets can drop 3 times as fast as they rise, and after 3 ½ weeks of steady growth, the last couple days saw US equity markets down sharply. Overall, it was still a positive April, but a little air out of the tires left us feeling a bit deflated.
Now, we are entering what is historically considered two of the worst months for investors; May and June.
And, as I type this newsletter, we have seen 3 of the last 5 trading days down over 1%. While it is early, the main causes are of some concern - Growth in the US is muted, employment is not picking up and the talks between Greece and its debtors have not progressed at all. It is even possible that revised GDP numbers for the previous quarter could end up negative. These issues have investors pushing the "pause" button currently. A few percentage points down is not alarming, but cause for concern.

Considering all these concerns, we have lightened up some in the model portfolio, and will be tightening the stops on our equities. We do not want to exit out of the markets just yet, but we do feel it prudent to be a bit more defensive until we see how things play out.
