The Q1 Job Market
  
The job market is shaping up into a fairly good first quarter. People who had accepted a role last quarter of 2012 are now starting their new job and leaving a vacancy. Also, people are collecting their bonuses early or have negotiated sign on bonuses for themselves to compensate for any money they may be walking away from. Budgeted for positions are actively being hired for. You may have noticed an uptick in available situations.
  
Will this last? Only time will tell but we do experience this type of activity during first quarters. Someone may consider accepting a role later vs. now if the expectation is that the market will continue its positive trend but it's a calculated risk.

Consulting Opportunities:
  
Taking on a consulting role is certainly a viable option to compliment your search activities and to expand your network.
  
From the employer's perspective, there are often considerations which lead them to the conclusion that the hiring of a consultant is their best option:   
  
  1. The PPACA is making the employer think twice about the implications of hiring a FTE.
  2. A hiring freeze prohibits them from hiring someone on a FTE basis right now, but the freeze is expected to lift.  They would like to lock someone in place now so they don't have to stall the process later.
  3. There are peak periods, a deadline or other special projects which need completion without affecting the productivity of others in the group.
  4. Perhaps there is a need to reduce tax risks associated with 1099 independent contractors
  5. An employer wants to evaluate a candidate's skills prior to offering direct employment. 
  6. An employer wants to reduce administration  costs associated with payroll withholdings.

 

 

Often, hiring a consultant is the best solution.
