Take Part in the National Day of Racial Healing

We are proud to announce our collaboration with
the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF)
and more than 130 organizations to take part in a
National Day of Racial Healing on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017
.

In the next few weeks, WKKF and its Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) collaborating organizations will carry out a variety of events to mark the first ever National Day of Racial Healing. The TRHT, community, corporate and non-profit partners represent a collective network of nearly 300 million Americans.

"Communities, organizations and individuals are being asked to acknowledge that there are still deep racial divisions in America that must be overcome," said Dr. Gail Christopher, senior advisor and vice president for TRHT at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.  "We have to come together to heal and commit to truth telling, engaging representatives from all racial, ethnic, religious and identity groups in genuine efforts to increase understanding, communication, caring and respect for one another."

Racial Equity Webinar Mini-Series

As the Community Action Network aims to effectively eradicate the causes and conditions of poverty, we understand that racial inequity rests at the intersection of multiple barriers that impede access to economic security for children, families and communities. The Partnership is pleased to offer new tools and resources to strengthen the Network's capacity to analyze the intersection of race and poverty in the lives of the entire community.

Upcoming Racial Equity Webinar Events

The link between racial inequality and economic insecurity is inextricable, and Americans need to understand this problem-and its solutions-in a deeper way. If the trends of the past 30 years continue, it will take African-American families 228 years to amass the same amount of wealth that white families enjoy today. For Latino families, it will take them 84 years to amass the same amount of wealth white families enjoy today if something doesn't change.  During this webinar presentation Dedrick Asante-Muhammad, Director of the Racial Wealth Divide, CFED and co-author of The Ever-Growing Gap: Without Change, African-American and Latino Families Won't Match White Wealth for Centuries will offer perspectives on the status of racial wealth inequality today. Attend this webinar to explore possible for for strategies for stalling racial wealth inequality.

This month, Senator Susan Collins (ME) published a piece in the Portland Press Herald on the importance of the 2Gen approach, highlighting her and Senator Heinrich's (NM) work on the Two-Generation Economic Empowerment Act. In this piece, Senator Collins points to the successes of Family Futures Downeast , one of the 10 demonstration sites that we are working with as a part of the Rural IMPACT initiative.

Every Place Counts Leadership Academy Transportation Toolkit

The Department of Transportation's Leadership Academy provides key background information and tools for emerging transportation leaders and other stakeholders who have limited experience with the transportation decision-making process. In December, 2016 they published this toolkit geared toward members of the public who wish to learn how to engage in the transportation decision-making process at the local, regional, state and federal levels.

The National Rural Transit Assistance Program

Public transit is a key to maintaining a high quality of life in rural areas-providing access to jobs, healthcare, and education.  With this in mind, the Federal Transit Administration created the National Rural Transportation Program (RTAP) to promote the effective use of public transit in rural areas. The National RTAP provides solutions to the challenges of rural public transit through a comprehensive set of free technical assistance programs and resources.

Pathways to Excellence Open Enrollment
February 21-22, 2016
New Orleans, LA

Pathways is the Partnership's premier organizational capacity building initiative.  The 35 Standards of Excellence represent the highest level of management and operational performance to which an agency can aspire.

The Pathway to Excellence Program begins with a two-day training session covering the Standards and how to apply the Organizational Self-Study as a rigorous diagnostic tool that identifies strengths to build on and critical areas to improve. Agencies typically bring teams of four to five staff who in turn lead the Self-Study process back home, providing an excellent opportunity to build the "leadership bench" of your organization.

You then have nine months to complete the Self-Study, supported by monthly webinars and/or conference calls with the Partnership staff and consultants.

Finally, an expert team of peer-reviewer trained in the Pathways process provides your agency with a comprehensive feedback report within three months that lays out a detailed improvement process and clear next steps for moving down the Pathway to Excellence.

For more information see the Partnership's website and contact Jarle Crocker, Director of Training and Technical Assistance.

Helping Families in Poverty by Speeding Delivery of SNAP Benefits

A new blog post on Community Commons maps the families eligible for SNAP benefits, where the retailers are located, and the results of the Work Supports strategies Initiative (WSS) in streamlining SNAP and other work support services. The post also highlights the new SNAP-ED Indicator report available on Community Commons. Similar to the Community Needs Assessment (CAN) function, but with different indicators selected, this report gives county level data on the intersection of nutrition and health with poverty. The report includes a data table, a graph, and a GIS map. View the post and report on Community Commons and be sure to register for the Partnership hub to use the CNA tool.
