AmeriCorps VISTA Making a Difference in Rural Communities

Last September, President Obama launched Rural IMPACT - a national project designed to combat rural child poverty by forming communities that coordinate the delivery of health, workforce, and human services. Rural IMPACT is an Administration-wide effort, with support from USDA, the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Labor, and CNCS, as well as the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Delta Regional Authority. Together, we are working to ensure, that in the words of President Obama, "a child's course in life should be determined not by the zip code she is born in, but by the strength of her work ethic and the scope of her dreams".

One year after AmeriCorps VISTA launched its partnership to improve rural communities: Rural IMPACT, we have the opportunity to hear from Daphne Gooding, a Rural IMPACT AmeriCorps VISTA member serving the Garrett County Community Action Committee in Oakland, MD.

ASSETS FOR INDEPENDENCE

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) Office of Community Services (OCS) will be accepting applications for grants to administer projects for the Assets for Independence (AFI) demonstration program. AFI is a community-based approach for giving low-income families a hand up out of poverty. Utilizing existing individual and community assets, AFI strengthens communities from within through the use of matched savings accounts called Individual Development Accounts (IDAs). Through financial education, AFI demonstrates the use and impact of IDAs to help low-income individuals move toward greater self-sufficiency.

RURAL HEALTH NETWORK DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP) will award approximately $27 million over a three-year project period to support the Program's goal of assisting rural health care providers in acclimating to the evolving health care environment, including delivery system reform and the focus on population health and value based payment. Eligible networks applying to this program will demonstrate that they have positioned themselves for these changes and must be mature, integrated health care networks that have combined the functions of the entities participating in the network in order to: achieve efficiencies; expand access to, coordinate, and improve the quality of essential health care services; and strengthen the rural health care system as a whole.

COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT HEALTHY FOOD FINANCING INITIATIVE

The Department of Health and Human Services is offering grant funds to CDCs for community-based efforts to improve the economic and physical health of people in areas designated as food deserts or where applicants can point to indicators of need, such as poor access to a healthy food retail outlet, a high percentage of individuals with low-income, incidence of diet-related health conditions, or high concentrations of persons eligible for food assistance programs. Through the Community Economic Development (CED) program and within the framework of the Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI), the Department seeks to fund projects that implement strategies to increase healthy food access, foster self-sufficiency for individuals and families with low income, and create sustained employment opportunities in communities with low incomes

An In-depth Look at Safe Routes to School (SRTS)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) new Health Impact in Five Years, or HI-5 (high-five) initiative highlights a list of non-clinical, community-wide approaches with a proven track record. Each intervention listed is associated with improved health within five years and is reported to be cost-effective or cost-saving over the lifetime of the population or even earlier. Public and private organizations can use this list to quickly assess the scientific evidence for short-term health outcomes and overall cost impacts of community-wide approaches.

This Web Forum series highlights specific interventions identified in the HI-5 initiative and will provide stakeholders with the opportunity to hear real-world examples of how local and state-level organizations have implemented Safe Routes to School (SRTS) to meet needs of their communities. In this Web Forum, John Auerbach, CDC Associate Director for Policy, and Elizabeth Skillen, CDC Senior Policy Advisor, will give an overview of the HI-5 initiative. Sara Zimmerman, Program and Policy Director at the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, and Melissa A. Kraemer Badtke, Principal Planner/Safe Routes to School Coordinator at the East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, will describe their experiences with SRTS programs, including how SRTS impacted health and costs.

We encourage public health professionals, community-based organizations, and urban planners to join us for this informative, one-hour Web Forum.

Executive Skills Portfolio

(Wednesday, January 4, 2017):

Submitting the Executive Skills Portfolio (ESP) is the second step in the process of becoming a Certified Community Action Professional (CCAP). The ESP is your chance to showcase your skills in doing the work of Community Action. It gives you a vehicle to show that you are a leader who understands Community Action's vision and values. In this webinar you will get a comprehensive look at what is expected of candidates in this step toward CCAP. And you will gain insight into what the ESP evaluators address when they examine candidates' ESP submissions.

Certification Examination

(Wednesday, April 5, 2017):

The national CCAP certification examination will be administered this cycle on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, in various locations around the country to candidates who were successful in their CDF and ESP submissions. In this webinar you will learn how the exam is constructed, what kinds of questions are asked, and how best to prepare for the exam. Once you pass, you are nationally recognized as a Certified Community Action Professional (CCAP).
