Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Twitter chat?
A tweet chat is a live Twitter event, usually moderated and focused around a general topic. To filter all the chatter on Twitter into a single conversation a hashtag is used. In our case, we will use #BeCommunityAction.
A set time is also established so that the moderator and guests are available to engage in the conversation. Our chat will begin at 2 pm ET/ 1 pm CT/12 pm MT/11 am PT and will last for 1 hour.
Who's involved?
This week's chat will feature Denise Harlow, CEO of Community Action Partnership. Denise will take questions related to topics including Community Action history, poverty today, why Community Action works, impact of performance management changes, and pursuing a CCAP designation. Post your questions and comments to the Twitter feed and Denise will answer questions live.
How do you participate in the chat?
To participate, all you need to do is tweet during the designated time using the conversation hashtag, #BeCommunityAction. It's also possible to just follow the conversation by searching the hashtag without engaging-but we want you involved!
A few guidelines during the chat:
- Questions and answers follow the format (Q1/A1 syntax for questions/answers).
- In most chats, discussions range from 5-10 minutes for each question.
- There is usually a minimum of six questions for each chat, with a maximum of 10-12 expected.
We will retweet the best of our participants' questions and comments, and respond when possible. We also encourage elaboration on points through follow-up questions. Though we will have Denise on-hand for the chat, we also look forward to local agencies and national partners serving as subject matter experts, too.
A few general Twitter reminders
- Reply directly for targeted conversations with one or two people. This means starting your tweet with "@" followed directly by the twitter name of the person for whom your message is intended, for example @CAPartnership.
- Note: For messages intended to reach larger chat audience, begin your message with ".@" - including a period at before the @ symbol. Without the starting period, your message is shared with only the person behind the "@" symbol, not the entire audience.
- When answering a specific question or comment from another participant, use Twitter handles to identify who you're speaking to in order to avoid confusion.
- Don't be afraid to contribute and jump in! It can be intimidating, but trust me, the moderators and participants will be glad to hear from you.
- It's OK to dip in and out of a Twitter chat. Drop by for the time you have and don't feel guilty if you can't stay for the whole thing.
- Remember, Twitter chats are about connecting and learning. Use the time to provide as much value on the given topic as possible and show your expertise without over-promoting.
- Always include the chat hashtag in your responses - #BeCommunityAction
- Be polite and positive!
