An electronic publication of the Community Action Partnership's
Learning Communities Resource Center

Dear Community Action Colleagues:

The T/TA Team here at the Partnership is very pleased with the launch of the Learning Community and the resources it will be producing for the Network through its Learning Community Groups as well as its Rural IMPACT initiative. We will continue to share the resources broadly and encourage you to become a "follower." See the Standards for Boards presentation below from our Management and Leadership Training Conference to share with you Board members, or schedule a time with the T/TA Team to speak with your Board. Be sure to save the dates for CAPLAW's webinars as well as the Learning Community National Webinar Series. If you haven't already, download the CSBG Highlights from NASCSP and share with your local partners. We know that conference season is ramping up again and we look forward to seeing many of you in the field in the coming months!
NOTE HER

Sincerely,

Jarle Crocker, PhD

BUILDING RESILIENCE:
THE PROMISE AND PRACTICE OF COMMUNITY ACTION
2016 Annual Convention Call for Workshops is Now Open
(through March 11)

Do you have a workshop idea for
August 2016?

We welcome proposals from Community Action Agencies, State and Regional Associations, national partners, and experts in the field of nonprofit and public administration.  We are looking for workshops that relate to our overall theme of Building Resilience as well as fit into our tracks:
  • Effective Administration and Governance (such as finance, human resources, technology usage, planning, board governance, leadership, etc.)
  • Promising Anti-Poverty Practices (such as program models; approaches to tackling the causes and conditions of poverty; working with special populations such as veterans, children, seniors, etc.)
  • Strategies to Increase Visibility (such as branding, marketing, communications, fundraising, etc.)
  • Research, Policy, and Action (such as big data, setting a policy agenda, education and advocacy, etc.)
  • Performance at the Front Line (skill building for intake and case managers such as coaching, human behavior, cultural competency, crisis intervention, customer service, etc.)
*Note there are a couple of differences between this year's call for Workshops and years past.  Performance at the Frontline is receiving more emphasis as a dedicated track, you are asked how your workshop fits with the theme and track, we are looking for more specificity on the intended audience of your workshop, and you no longer have to put in the biographies of your co-presenters or you're A/V needs at this point in time.
2016-2017 LEARNING COMMUNITY HAS LAUNCHED
*Note that this map includes members and followers and is a preliminary list at this time.

Rural IMPACT Resources from the
Learning Community
The overall goal of Rural IMPACT is to reduce child poverty by helping communities improve the economic status, education, and well-being of families through a two-generation approach that serves children and their parents together. Each Rural IMPACT Demonstration site is asked to work to align and integrate programs, policies, and systems to better meet the needs of low-income rural and tribal families. Two-generation approaches intentionally link, coordinate, and align high quality services for children with high quality services and supports for their parents. Technical assistance will be provided to support the sites in implementing these strategies and accessing federal resources that can support their efforts.

Addressing Neighborhood Poverty and Family Financial Security
Pew Charitable Trusts
March 3, 2016
2pm ET

Last month, Pew published  Neighborhood Poverty and Household Financial Security, a chartbook that illustrates the health of family balance sheets in high- and low-poverty communities across the United States. The analysis found that low-income residents in low-poverty neighborhoods tend to have higher savings and wealth and lower rates of financial hardship than similar households in higher-poverty communities. This research underscores the role of place in helping - or hindering - both financial security and economic mobility.

Join Pew for highlights from the chartbook,  a discussion of local data, tools, and measures of financial security, as well as what you as an on-the-ground practitioner can do to put this data to work.
