CSBG DEAR COLLEAGUE LETTER RE HUD COUNT OF HOMELESS
|
In an effort to better understand the homeless population, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires its Continuums of Care (CoCs) across the country to count their inventory of homeless beds and units (i.e., the Housing Inventory Count or HIC) and sheltered homeless persons each year. Community Action provides assistance to the homeless community and can partner with local Continuums of Care to assist in the HUD count. READ THE FULL LETTER WITH ACCOMPANYING RESOURCES...

5 FACTS FOR CONSUMERS ABOUT FEE FOR NOT HAVING HEALTH COVERAGE
|
New blog post from the CEO of HealthCare.gov offers five facts regarding the fee associated with not having health care coverage in 2016. Community Action is a key partner in the outreach and enrollment efforts of this winter enrollment period and having all the facts to share with community members is essential.
- The fee is calculated one of two different ways, depending on your situation. The fee for not having health insurance if you can afford it is calculated either as a percentage of your annual household income or a set amount for each person in your household who does not have coverage. When you file your federal income taxes, if you are uninsured for more than three months despite having access to affordable coverage, you'll be required to pay whichever amount is higher.
- The fee is increasing for 2016...

OPPORTUNITY, RESPONSIBILITY, AND SECURITY
|
A bipartisan working group hosted by the Brookings Institution and the American Enterprise Institute came together to create a proposal to reduce poverty and increase opportunity. Utilizing statistical evidence and experience from those on the working group, the proposal focuses on the issues of family, education, and employment while discussing the values of opportunity, responsibility, and security. The report discusses many of the challenges Community Action strives to help their clients grapple with daily. Many times it is stated what the progressive members of the team would hope for and what conservative members of the team would hope for, but the proposals offered serve as a compromise to move the discussion forward.
The report offers statistical trends of poverty, income inequality, and wages. It focuses on increasing the skill base of those seeking employment, the need for increased incentives for support by higher education institutions, and a "work-based safety net." The proposal calls for increased investment in preschool and post-secondary education as well as a greater emphasis on social-emotional learning. READ THE FULL REPORT FOR MORE INFORMATION

LONG-TERM BENEFITS OF SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
|
The White House released a report this week detailing the benefits of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as well as the reality that with the current level of benefits, many families are still facing food insecurity.
"The current level of benefits often cannot sustain families through the end of the month - causing children to go hungry and endangering their health, education performance, and life chances"
Community Action understands that SNAP benefits support vulnerable populations of all ages to reduce the effects of poverty and influence the health of children even before they are born. Community Action also understands that current benefit levels are not effecting food insecurity and healthy nutrition as much as they could. Use this report and its statistics and evidence that adds to the experience of your agency and community to inform your needs assessment and advocacy efforts. READ THE FULL REPORT HERE.
