An electronic publication of the Community Action Partnership's Risk Mitigation Center

Dear Community Action Colleagues:

It has been a very busy July for the T/TA team here at the Partnership - creating implementation tools around the Organizational Standards, re-launching the Pathways to Excellence Program, and planning for an intense Annual Conference in San Francisco. As I am sure it is just as busy for you all, I hope that some of the resources and trainings highlighted below will fill any needs that exist to build our capacity and make our efforts more efficient. If you weren't able to make the first of the Risk Assessment webinars, I encourage you to watch the recording and join us for the second in the series to get all your questions answered on completing a comprehensive risk assessment using our online tool. CAPLAW and NASCSP have training opportunities over the next few months that I also hope you will take advantage of as well. If you haven't registered for the convention, there is still time, so check out our list of workshop sessions and pre-conference activities and get your registration in.

Hope to see you all in San Francisco next month!

Sincerely,

Jarle Crocker, PhD

Director, Training and Technical Assistance

Second Open Enrollment Pathways to Excellence Training of the Year

September 28th and 29th*

New Orleans, LA

*(Please note the date change from the previous announcement)

What is Pathways to Excellence?

Pathways is the Partnership's premier organizational capacity building initiative.  Just as the new CSBG organizational standards developed by the Center of Excellence in collaboration with the Community Action Network define the basic minimum requirements an agency must meet, the 35 Standards of Excellence  represent the highest level of management and operational performance to which an agency can aspire.

What Does the Process Entail?

  • Two-day training session: how to apply the Organizational Self-Study as a rigorous diagnostic tool that identifies strengths to build on and critical areas to improve.  Agencies typically bring teams of four to five staff
  • Self-Study Process:  You have nine months to complete the Self-Study, supported by monthly webinars and/or conference calls with the Partnership staff and consultants.
  • Peer-Review:  an expert team of peer-reviewer trained in the Pathways process provides your agency with a comprehensive feedback report within three months that lays out a detailed improvement process and clear next steps for moving down the Pathway to Excellence.

How Do I Apply?

Visit the Partnership's website for more information.

Enrollment is limited and is on a first-come-first-serve basis - If you are interested in the September 28-29th training, contact Jarle Crocker today.

Integrated Finance

Thursday, September 17, 2015; 2-3pm Eastern

Recipients of the CED/CED-HFFI grant often need various types of funding: equity, debt and grants, to invest in the necessary property, equipment and/or resources to expand impact in their community.  There are typically three options: (1) wait to raise all of the necessary funds from public grants, donations, and foundations; (2) approach a conventional lender viewing you through the lens traditional lending criteria; or, (3) seek funding from both sources, an integrated finance approach that can leverage public funds to access all funding sources available.  This webinar brings together a panel of financial experts and grantees offering perspectives on an integrated finance approach to leverage grants.

CHECK-UP: TIPS ON COMPLYING WITH THE EMPLOYER MANDATE

2 PART WEBINAR SERIES WITH CAPLAW

The employer mandate is in effect for many larger employers, but many employers still have questions.  Through two one-hour webinars, CAPLAW will examine specific compliance issues surrounding the employer mandate, focusing first on how to identify who is full-time employee covered by the mandate and then on how to meet the new reporting requirements, using new IRS Forms 1094 and 1095.

Part 1: Determining if Individuals are Full-Time Employees under the Employer Mandate

Tuesday, August 11, 2:00-3:00 p.m. EDT

Wondering how to determine whether particular CAA staff members are considered full-time employees under the ACA and whether employer mandate assessments will apply if health coverage is not offered?  Our first webinar will help CAAs apply the employer mandate rules by explaining how those rules apply to a number of common CAA situations, including Head Start staff who are laid off during the summer and individuals enrolled in job training programs.  Attendees will learn how to address a number of key situations in applying the employer mandate and basic rules for addressing other situations.

Part 2: Understanding the Employer Mandate's Reporting Requirements

Wednesday, August 12, 2:00-3:00 p.m. EDT

Concerned about which of the new IRS reporting requirements under the employer and individual mandates apply to you?  What data do you need collect?  When do you need to submit and deliver the new forms?  How do you complete those forms?  Our second webinar will discuss these new reporting requirements, focusing primarily on IRS Forms 1094-C and 1095-C forms, as well as key issues to be aware of when collecting information and reporting.  Attendees will leave this webinar with a framework for meeting the new requirements as they begin to examine the new forms and instructions.
