Facebook Gives Users the Power to Control Their Own News Feeds

July 9, 2015; Tech Crunch

" Facebook recently announced that the network would be giving social media users the power to control and coordinate what people and organizations fill up their News Feeds. The new preference settings will allow readers to prioritize the friends and Pages that show up at the top of their News Feeds, giving Facebook users flexibility to personalize their experience on the network once again."

USDA Study: Rural Philanthropy Still an Underfunded Afterthought

June 2015; Economic Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture

"At Nonprofit Quarterly, the research staff available to an individual writer is that writer himself or herself alone. To do real investigative work, you need funding, and that is a rarity in journalism nowadays. Most nonprofit journals can't redeploy writers from their daily responsibilities and put together a team to do detailed, research-based investigative work unless they have regular backing like the philanthropic wealth of the Sandler family that supports ProPublica or the Knight Foundation, which backs a number of local nonprofit news outlets, albeit none dedicated to covering the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors. For that reason, it makes us feel just a tiny bit proud to see the various articles on rural philanthropic grantmaking that NPQ has published over the years, suggesting to no one's surprise that rural was getting the short end of the stick, validated by a new research report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture."

dolDOL PROPOSED OVERTIME REFORMS AND THE IMPACT ON NONPROFITS

"The U.S. Department of Labor has proposed sweeping new regulations designed to expand overtime protections for millions of workers employed by nonprofits, for-profits, and governments. The draft regulations, which will not go into effect (if at all) until after a period of public comment and analysis, would more than double the minimum salary level that white-collar employees must be paid (from $23,660 to $50,400) to exempt them from overtime pay of time and half of wages for hours worked in excess of 40 in any week. The Labor Department is also proposing raising the minimum salary level for "highly compensated employees" from $100,000 to over $120,000 per year, and seeking comments on whether the government should establish a mechanism for automatically raising these salary levels in the future."
